Operation Code Veteran’s Day Benefit Dinner & Silent Auction
Roll back
| description |
PORTLAND, Ore. - [Operation Code’s](https://www.operationcode.org) Veteran’s Day Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on
Friday, November 10th, 2017, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m at the Governor Ballroom in the Sentinel
Hotel. The signature evening is a fundraiser for Operation Code’s education programs that is currently
serving a community of over 3,000 military service members, guard & reserve troops, veterans,
spouses and family members globally with software mentorship, tech conference scholarships, career
support, networking and resources.
Individual tickets are $85 per person and are available for purchase online at [www.operationcode.org/
benefit](https://www.operationcode.org/benefit). Businesses can take advantage of the unique marketing opportunity through several levels of
sponsorship. Sponsorship participation provides an opportunity to show support for the Benefit and
those participating, along with advertisement for your company. All sponsorship levels include
different forms of signage and advertising at the event and recognition in our media outreach. All
levels include a table at the Benefit. A limited block of rooms at the Sentinel Hotel are available at
special pricing for our guests.
“The evening is an opportunity to pause, reflect and toast to our collective successes and wins that is
driving more veterans and family members into software development and filling the nation’s technical
shortage with America’s finest than ever before,” says ex-Army Captain David Molina, Operation
Code’s Founder & Executive Director. “This Benefit is an opportunity to meet our scholarship
recipients who have benefitted from our education programs, as well as enjoy good company and an
excellent dinner, and bid on some fabulous auction items.”
The Benefit will start with no-host wine & beer, delicious hors d’oeuvres and silent auction at 5:30
p.m., followed by a sumptuous dinner starting at 6:30 p.m, and an exciting program highlighting the
work of Operation Code. “At the rate this all-volunteer organization is growing year-over-year, it’s
become incredibly apparent that we not just pause for a moment to reflect on how much impact it has
had, but also endow a scholarship fund,” says Chris Dawson, technology entrepreneur and 2017
Benefit Co-Chair.
At this momentous benefit, Operation Code supporters will have the chance to meet our scholars
while bidding on some fabulous silent auction items including, Disneyland, Southwest Airlines, Toro
Bravo, and Hotel Lucia.
This year’s major sponsors include, NodeJS Foundation, Sabio, and Beneficial State Bank. For a full
list of 2017 sponsors and event information, visit: [www.operationcode.org/
benefit](https://www.operationcode.org/benefit). |

PDXWIT Immerse Yourself in Virtual Reality
Roll back
| description |
Are you looking for an event to get better acquainted with Virtual Reality? In partnership with Joshua Alan Young from the Portland VR Meetup, co-organizers Judy Fischbach and Marguerite Gallagher invite you to come learn what Virtual Reality offers and to understand why there is so much trending interest. An emerging technology that is expected to impact many fields, including entertainment, journalism, education, and health care, VR/AR has been identified by the Technology Association of Oregon as one of top areas of technology growth in our state. The community in Portland is gaining momentum. It's an exciting time for many of us to jump in as the technology is so new. The playing field is more level and there is much interest beyond non-technology in areas such as the arts and education. The integrative nature of creating applications in VR can be unique and fun!
Don’t know where to begin? We will have an overview, hands-on opportunities to experience the technology, and information on tools and resources. Our panel will include speakers from the community on VR education and on companies/projects with promising VR related work which demonstrates the variety of exciting applications. Bring your questions!
We promise this will be a fun and memorable evening as we explore ways to grow community together in this fascinating new area of technology!

<br>Q: Is there secured bike parking?
<br>A: There is an open bike room, but please bring locks as it is in a common space.
<br>Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
<br>A: We always recommend public transportation as a way to cut down on Co2, and there is plenty of public transportation nearby.

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. |

Guest Speakers and Talk Description:
Females in social virtual reality get unwanted attention, which is a barrier to widespread adoption. How might we learn more about female users in order to make Social VR appealing to all? Jessica Outlaw and Beth Duckles will share results from their qualitative study of women in social virtual reality and their recommendations for all tech creators.
Jessica Outlaw, M.S., is VR/AR experience researcher and founder of Data Driven LLC. Trained as a behavioral scientist, she uses qualitative and quantitative research methods to strategize and test experiences. She blogs at "The Extended Mind on how changes in the body and the environment influence the way that users think, feel, and behave in VR. She received her B.A. in Sociology from Scripps College and her Masters from U.C. San Diego.
Beth M. Duckles, Ph.D. is a sociologist and ethnographer who has worked in industry, nonprofits, government agencies and higher education. She has taught topics such as qualitative research, energy policy, organizational theory and nonprofit organizations. She received her B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from Earlham College and her Ph.D. in Sociology from University of Arizona. More information can be found here.
Rachel Bracker is a virtual reality video editor and producer at 360 Labs, a Portland-based VR video production company that creates immersive experiences for clients like Google, The United States Coast Guard, and Columbia Sportswear. A graduate from the University of Oregon's Multimedia Journalism Master's degree program, Rachel specializes in documentary storytelling and is passionate about using VR to tell better stories. She will share her experiences creating 360 videos and provide insight into the inherit strengths of storytelling in this exciting medium.
Kerri Lynne Thorp will be discussing experiments and experience in non-fiction immersive storytelling. Kerri is an artist, futurist and feminist, exploring story and culture through documentary, virtual reality, and public engagement. Her desire to expand access to technology is driven by her use of storytelling as a crucial way to affect social change. Kerri is the Board VP of NW Documentary and Woman Led. She is currently and teaches 360 video production and is developing a mobile art gallery VR application, Kerri is also the creative director for the youth documentary program Produced by Her.
Demo Experience - HAUBERK 360
An interactive 360 exploration of artist Rosana Ybarra's solo exhibition Hauberk. Hauberk is a collection of works that act as hybrid between the amulet (a good luck charm) and the shield which would protect the heart. They are spiritual armor in physical form, a psychic safety zone. They say: better to have false comfort than no comfort at all.

You don't need to have any experience with Sketch to come. Beginners totally welcome!

This workshop will be hands-on, and you will need your Mac laptop to follow along. By the end, you will have designed a couple of screens that you will test using InVision (a collaboration tool for design and product teams), animated through Principle or Framer, and handed off to developers through Zeplin.
You don't need to have any experience with Sketch to come. Beginners totally welcome!
<b>Requirements: </b>
• A MacBook of some kind. Sketch is a Mac-only tool.
• A copy of Sketch. You can download a free 30 day trial.

Code 101: Intro to Web Development- A Discover Code Workshop
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
**Start Here! Code 101 is a half-day workshop that is the perfect place to figure out if coding is for you.**
A web developer shapes an envisioned design into a fully functioning website application that has immediate reach (think Facebook, GMail or Pinterest). In this workshop, we walk you through the basics of HTML and CSS to build a web page. Then we’ll introduce Mavo, an open-source library from Lea Verou at MIT, that will allow us to transform our web pages into web applications that can integrate and update user data.
Bring your laptop!
**About Discover Code Workshops:**
Software development is a broad and interesting field with many areas in which you can specialize. Two things that tie all developers together are writing code and a passion for interesting and challenging work. But the highly technical nature can make it difficult from the outside, or if you’re new, to understand what types of careers and specialization is available.
That’s why Alchemy Code Lab is launching Discover Code. A series of half-day workshops designed to give you a hands-on, no-experience-required introduction to various disciplines within software development. Whether you’re about to launch a new career or just want to find out how software development is actually used in a professional setting, join us for one or more of our Discover Code workshops. |

Galois Tech Talk: RustBelt: Securing the Foundations of the Rust Programming Language
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Abstract:
Rust is a new systems programming language that promises to overcome the seemingly fundamental tradeoff between high-level safety guarantees and low-level control over resource management. Unfortunately, none of Rust’s safety claims have been formally proven, and there is good reason to question whether they actually hold. Specifically, Rust employs a strong, ownership-based type system, but then extends the expressive power of this core type system through libraries that internally use unsafe features. In this work, we present RustBelt, the first formal (and machine-checked) safety proof for a language representing a realistic subset of Rust. Our proof is extensible in the sense that, for each new Rust library that uses unsafe features, we can say what verification condition it must satisfy in order for it to be deemed a safe extension to the language. We have carried out this verification for some of the most important libraries that are used throughout the Rust ecosystem. In the talk, I will first review some of the essential features of Rust, and then explain some of the key ideas behind the RustBelt verification.
Bio:
Derek Dreyer is a professor of computer science at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS), and recipient of the 2017 ACM SIGPLAN Robin Milner Young Researcher Award. His research runs the gamut from the type theory of high-level functional languages, down to the verification of compilers and low-level concurrent programs under relaxed memory models. He is currently leading the RustBelt project, which focuses on building the first formal foundations for the Rust programming language. He also knows a thing or two about Scotch whisky. |
