Monitoring your Energy Footprint

Smart Devices and information systems to help people make better choices about how they use energy are in the early stage of adoption. While many home energy monitoring solutions have been introduced in recent years, no products or services have emerged that have brought about a significant change in consumer behavior. While many devices are technologically sophisticated or cool to look at it seems there is still a need for new innovations and better ways to motivate users to make a lasting change in their energy footprint. The challenge for product developers and entrepreneurs is the development of a comprehensive energy monitoring system for homes that is compelling, easy to use and effective.

The Prius dashboard is a good example of a system that is making a real difference in consumer behavior. By providing information to a user on mileage and energy performance it is motivating people to change their driving style. We need to explore ways in which we can have a similar impact on managing one’s personal energy lifestyle. How do you create energy monitoring devices with intuitive interfaces and automatic functions that customers can easily integrate into their daily life? How will consumers be informed about what is possible and how will energy utilities, governments, agencies, or retail channels work to supply the demand? What other issues must be overcome before we see mass adoption of smart energy management devices. Add TAL, improve a threat model!

To improve your (threat) modeling career, you need a better (threat) agent (library)! Threat modeling is a process for capturing, organizing, and analyzing the security of a system based on the perspective of a threat agent. Threat modeling enables informed decision-making about application security risk. In addition to producing a model, typical threat modeling efforts also produce a prioritized list of security improvements to the concept, requirements, design, or implementation. In 2009, OWASP posted wiki pages on threat modeling. Although there was the start of a section on threat agents, it has yet to be completed.

Intel developed a unique standardized threat agent library (TAL) that provides a consistent, up-to-date reference describing the human agents that pose threats to IT systems and other information assets. Instead of picking threat agents based on vendor recommendations and space requirements in Powerpoint, the TAL produces a repeatable, yet flexible enough for a range of risk assessment uses. We will cover both the TAL, the Threat Agent Risk Assessment (TARA), how they can be used to improve threat modeling.

Baltazar Ruiz is an Application Engineer based out of Hillsboro, OR. He covers Cloud Service Providers (Such as Groupon, Craigslist, Progressive, etc.). Baltazar is an immigrant from Monterrey, Mexico, where he studied Control and Computing, the technology you find in manufacturing plants where robots build cars. However; he spent his professional life working in ISPs and Communications Service Providers since 1997, as a Systems and Network Engineer and leading the technical teams.

This is Oregon Blockchain’s inaugural conference. It will be hosted in Portland, Oregon and aims to bring a wide range of unique industry perspectives together with students in a dynamic event, highlighting the future of the budding blockchain ecosystem in the Pacific Northwest. We will be hosting speakers from Intel, Microsoft, Public Market, and inviting students from the University of Washington, Arizona State University, Portland State University, Oregon State University, and UC Berkeley.
