About the Panelists John Weiss is Executive Creative Director of WebMD Health Services, and his work is guided by purpose, passion, simplicity, beauty, innovation, and surprise. He is responsible for crafting online experiences that change behavior and ultimately improve lives. John oversees all aspects of design across digital and traditional mediums within the organization. With over 13 years of experience in interactive and experience design, John has built and led high performing design teams as the Director of Experience Design at Waggener Edstrom, and Experience Director at Ascentium. Through smart design that empowered their audience and strengthened their brand, he has designed compelling work for clients such as BMW, Microsoft, U.S. Air Force, T-Mobile, Subaru, Amazon, Motorola, GE, Disney, Honda, and Intel. John founded FiveEdge Media in 2003, a Portland/Seattle-based Experience Design agency that conceived, prototyped, and designed innovative visually compelling application and experience designs with great attention to detail for over 28 clients which led to a successful acquisition in 2008. John is deeply passionate about creating authentic experiences that are truly meaningful—experiences that are rooted in elegant design, built with innovative technology, and create lasting relationships and shape the future. Katey Deeney is Director of Experience Design at WebMD Health Services, and she has almost 15 years of experience designing effective, delightful solutions to complex user challenges. She has researched, evaluated, and designed mobile, software, and web interactions for brands including Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon, and T-mobile. Her professional knowledge is complemented by advanced academic work; she earned her MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design and her MS from the University of Washington. As an educator, Katey has taught both design studios and lecture courses to graduate and undergraduate students. In addition, she has guest lectured for courses at the University of Washington in several academic departments, including the Information School, Human Centered Design & Engineering, and Communication in Digital Media. Aaron Wasler is the Creative Director at WebMD and a multi-faceted designer whose work encompasses strategy, design, and technology. His projects have included the design of brand identity, catalogs, packaging, environments, exhibitions, interactive installations, websites, and user interfaces. Prior to joining WebMD, Aaron enjoyed various positions such as Design Director, SVP of Branding & Creative, Senior Art Director, and Senior Information Architect. Aaron has successfully built and led multi-disciplinary teams of varying sizes while creating award-winning work in a variety of design disciplines. During the last 15 years of his design practice and while working as a design educator, Aaron has developed new and innovative design research and methodologies. Most of all, Aaron is a passionate storyteller who truly believes in design thinking and the power of design to both inspire and inform. Aaron holds an MFA in Graphic Design from Maryland Institute College of Art and a BA in Design from Brigham Young University.

description Portland Linux/Unix Group Meeting Auke Kok will talk about systemd init(8) Replacement It's a little known secret that systemd is extremely capable of starting, controlling and regulating more than just system services, but can easily start an entire Desktop UI. Not many people have sat down and implemented and worked out the problems of starting an X service, a few UI components, the session bus and DBus services for normal users with the mechanisms that systemd provides. The benefits are obvious: Systemd provides excellent service monitoring and restarting capabilities, provides socket and DBus activation for relevant services, and overall improves desktop startup by allowing user services to start well before core services like Xorg or wayland start. In effect, we're saying goodbye to XDG autostart entirely, and getting back reliability and scalability. We converted several desktop environments including Tizen's Mobile UI, Xfce4, Enlightenment and more to systemd user sessions. We "pop the hood" and take a look at the implications for startup, what's possible to further improve on the session startup and where we can do better. Auke Kok is a software engineer at Intel's Open Source Technology Center, and has been attempting to make Linux boot faster since 2007. In 2008, he co-presented the "5-second boot" with Arjan van de Ven at the first LPC. Since then, Auke has worked on further improving the Linux Core OS start sequence, first for Moblin and later with MeeGo, where we made the first switch to systemd. description nil → Portland Linux/Unix Group Meeting Auke Kok will talk about systemd init(8) Replacement It's a little known secret that systemd is extremely capable of starting, controlling and regulating more than just system services, but can easily start an entire Desktop UI. Not many people have sat down and implemented and worked out the problems of starting an X service, a few UI components, the session bus and DBus services for normal users with the mechanisms that systemd provides. The benefits are obvious: Systemd provides excellent service monitoring and restarting capabilities, provides socket and DBus activation for relevant services, and overall improves desktop startup by allowing user services to start well before core services like Xorg or wayland start. In effect, we're saying goodbye to XDG autostart entirely, and getting back reliability and scalability. We converted several desktop environments including Tizen's Mobile UI, Xfce4, Enlightenment and more to systemd user sessions. We "pop the hood" and take a look at the implications for startup, what's possible to further improve on the session startup and where we can do better. Auke Kok is a software engineer at Intel's Open Source Technology Center, and has been attempting to make Linux boot faster since 2007. In 2008, he co-presented the "5-second boot" with Arjan van de Ven at the first LPC. Since then, Auke has worked on further improving the Linux Core OS start sequence, first for Moblin and later with MeeGo, where we made the first switch to systemd. description nil → The Salt Stack team is very pleased to announce the first multi city Salt development sprint. In true Salt fashion we are hosting a distributed sprint. This, thanks to a generous donation from the Linux Fund and the accomidations generosly donated by C7 datacenters in Salt Lake City Utah, Cars.com in Santa Monica California, and Idealist.org in Portland Oregon. This development sprint is being conducted with the express hope of adding more complete unit and integration test coverage to Salt, but as always, feature additions and bug fixes are welcome! The three cities and location sponsors are, I hope, only the first locations where we can gather Salt developers for this sprint. The goal of Salt Stack is to develop something great, powerful, and open. I hope that this is the first of many multi city sprints that will enable Salt to continue pushing forward and becoming an ever more powerful system. The Sprints will be held all day on the 30th of June. Attendees will get T-shirts and there will be a live video feed from all the cities involved. There will also be food and drink!
