create Calagator::Event 1250461997 Research Club Brunch #22: Coffee, comics, and cabaret! Roll back

description nil Featured talks: Leo Daedalus - The Late Now Leo hosts the thinking mammal’s live late-night-style variety-cabaret-talk show. A considered fiasco for the avant set. Vivian Hua i like music, art, social experimentation, traveling, writing, bright colors, drawing, making up words, reading, and talking to strangers. i need healthy doses of alone time. i live life like i want to live it. sometimes it’s glamorous, and sometimes it’s hideous. i go with the flow and like to embrace the things that “chance” happens to bring. i am totally a romantic, but most people would never know by interacting with me. Sara Mirk - Oregon History Comics In 2009, I started on what I thought would be a quick, fun educational project: Creating 10 small comic books about Oregon’s history. My friends, myself, and the majority of Portland didn’t grow up in the state, so researching and writing these comics was a way to help build understanding of our surroundings in a relevant, accessible medium. Local arts and culture nonprofit theDill Pickle Club joined on as a collaborator and over the past two years we’ve raised $2,500, hired nine local artists, and published six of the ten comics. The box set of comics is finally being released this March 5th at Powell’s! Ezra Spier - Sustainable Harvest Sustainable Harvest is a specialty coffee importer that uses the Relationship Coffee model to bring partners together in a sustainable supply chain that serves everyone involved — from the farmer to the final consumer. Our approach builds direct, transparent market linkages for coffee growers while investing in training and management systems to improve their ability to produce high quality coffee. Information for the good of the order: The deluxe accommodations at Collective Agency allow us to offer you actual dishes, although we may bring cabbage bowls for the sake of maudlin sentimentality. Bringing your own dishes is still approved/appreciated, and if you help to clean up afterward, well!

We have three talks lined up: * Bart Massey will show us Inform 7. * Joe Groff is going to present on Factor. * Markus Roberts will give a talk on ... something. We're still working that out. If you've seen Markus present before, you know it's probably more fun that way.

description Executing on an idea is hard. Making sure you're correctly moving forward on the idea is even harder. At core of every smart decision is the intersection of four major themes: Data, Culture, Networks, and People. This talk will motivate this belief with data and epic tales about Etsy.com, OurShelf, and Tutorspree, leaving you with a framework on how to more effectively push an idea into a successful product. About the speaker: Paul lives for magnificent engineering. Elegant, well-founded, useful solutions to problems that say something about engineering's beauty. He loves metrics, taking on the impossible, and making lives better through technology. Currently he is the VP of Engineering at Tutorspree (YC). Previously he worked at PushButton Labs, Etsy.com, OurShelf (DreamIt), and SilverCloud Software as well as working in advanced research (DARPA). We toured its user interface and explored its status information from a system administrator's perspective. This month we will look at this issues relating to building your own 64-bit new hardware system and explore ZFS resource usage. As before, you are welcome to bring various client machines to interrogate and hopefully pound on FreeNAS with. Bring your own food and drink. See you there!
