DorkbotPDX 0x04 - NYC invasion – AboutUs Dorkbot PDX brings you the next installation of its lecture series.
As always, the event is free and open to the public. Feel free to bring snacks and beverages to share. Please spread the word! We are extremely honored to have two distinguished artists from New York visiting Portland and sharing their work with DorkbotPDX. Please help us welcome these amazing and inspiring dorks from across the way! Michael Mandiberg "FAIL, WIN!, FTW? Three Creative Commons Case Studies" Michael Mandiberg is known for selling all of his possessions online on Shop Mandiberg, making perfect copies of copies on AfterSherrieLevine.com, and creating Firefox plugins that highlight the real environmental costs of a global economy on TheRealCosts.com . His current projects include the co-authored groundbreaking Creative Commons licensed textbook Digital Foundations: an Intro to Media Design that teaches Bauhaus visual principles through design software, HowMuchItCosts.us, a car direction site that incorporates the financial and carbon cost of driving, and Bright Bike, a retro-reflective bicycle treehugger.com praised as “obnoxiously bright.” He is a Senior Fellow at Eyebeam, and an Assistant Professor at the College of Staten Island/CUNY. He lives in, and rides his bicycle around, Brooklyn. His work lives at Mandiberg.com Open Dork Your project, your dime! OpenDork provides a flexible forum for people doing strange things with electricity to show off their work in a quick, formal, but relaxed setting. It's up to YOU! Do a quick demo, brag, ask for help, show off your stuff. OpenDork talks/demos are short (generally 5-10 minutes) and may have slides, or hardware, or both, or neither. Get interactive! Marisa Olson "Performed Listening" Marisa Olson's work combines performance, video, net art, sound, drawing, and installation to address the cultural history of technology, the politics of participation within pop culture, and the aesthetics of failure. Her work has recently been presented by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Centre Pompidou-Paris, New Museum of Contemporary Art, 52nd International Biennale di Venezia, the British Film Institute, the Sundance Film Festival, and elsewhere. She's a Contributing Editor at Rhizome and Assistant Professor of New Media at SUNY-Purchase. |

Online Community Managers PDX MeetUp – Hopworks Urban Brewery Current or aspiring managers of Online Communities are invited to join us for a discussion of the "art" and the "science" of what it takes to get online communities started and keep them going--logistically, technically, philosophically. This is the first time at this new venue...so we're trying it out. We hope to have a "Mezzanine-level" table at HopWorks... See you there! Ann Marcus Group Organizer |

BYTE ME 2012 - A Showcase of Technological Art – Launch Pad Gallery 2012 is a year filled with anticipation... Will our planet come to a sudden end? Will the world economy crumble? Will Obama get re-elected? Who knows? Does anyone care? BYTE ME, 2012 can take your mind off of all these difficult questions and perhaps even answer some of them for you. The event showcases installations and artwork by Portland artists Libbey White, Donald Delmar Davis, Jonas Nash, and Cameron Adamez that highlight the use of technology in different ways. The centerpiece is the world premiere of the installation T,E.D. (Transformations, Emotional Deconstruction), created by Sean Hathaway, with music by Carlos Severe Marcelin. This large work features 80 customized Teddy Ruxpin dolls wired together, delivering real-time emotional content from the internet based on the Emotion Wheel developed by the psychologist Robert Plutchik. The work uses speech engines and lighting to deliver a seamless and continuous conversation between the animated dolls who have had their motherboards replaced by the custom board designed for this piece by the creator. Interactive real-time input can also be done by the audience through text messaging or an on-site TED software application. |

BYTE ME 2013 - Annual Exposition of Technological Art – AFRU Gallery We here at AFRU are gearing up for Byte Me! 2013. It was a great show last year and we hope to make it bigger and better for this year. If you are not familiar with Byte Me! it is our annual exposition of technical art. So, what is ‘Technical Art’ exactly? For the context of Byte Me we are defining it as artwork whose inspiration, medium, design or execution would be prohibitively difficult if not impossible to realize without the aid of or direct incorporation of technology. The goal of this show is to not only exhibit a narrow but emergent sub section of artwork but also to foster a larger and tighter community of geeky-artists and artistic-nerds. |

eBay Tech Tuesday: The Evolution of Culture in Portland Tech – eBay Community Lounge “Culture” was the Merriam-Webster word of the year in 2014. In the startup world, the word permeates job interviews, board room meetings, and conversations around the water cooler. But what does culture actually mean when applied to tech companies of all sizes? To answer this question, eBay is launching it’s monthly Tech Tuesday series with a panel-based conversation about culture. We’ve gathered new voices in thought leadership to bring fresh ideas to this topic, while considering and respecting what we’ve learned from the past. Panelists include: Lindsay Wolff Longsdon , Co-Founder/Advisor, Culture Lab @WolffLogsdon Bruce Yarnall, Director of Mobile QA, eBay Marketplaces Donald Truxillo, Ph.D., Professor, Industrial/Organizational Psychology Moderator: Sara Morrow, Talent Partner at eBay Marketplaces @PDXsaram We purposely expanded the typical HR heavy culture panel to a manager of technical teams, a startup founder, and a professor who researches both methods employers use to hire workers and perceptions of potential employees during recruitment and hiring. These panelists will help us illuminate how culture is applied throughout the whole process of engaging an employee: from attraction to a company, hiring, integrating, ongoing development, to promotions or exits. The end result? Some common understandings of what culture means, as well as, how we can navigate the nuances as employers and/or employees. RSVP through Meetup to attend “The Evolution of Culture in Portland Tech.” We look forward to seeing you! |

Join The Riveter and Future for Us for The State of Womxn of Color Roadshow, an evening to tell audacious stories of womxn of color at work, accompanied by an overview of the data, insights and solutions. Allies and champions are invited to come together to support womxn of color professionals through community, culture and career development - to create equity of access and opportunities for advancement. Together we can take actions to advance womxn of color and explore what it takes to build intentional communities for and with womxn of color, examine how allies can strengthen their cultural competency muscle, and explore what true workplace collaboration can make possible! 6:00 - 6:30pm Registration and Networking 6:30 - 7:00pm The State of Womxn of Color Presentation with Future for Us Founders 7:00 - 8:00pm Panel + Q&A 8:00 - 8:30pm Networking Why womxn and not womxn? Cinder Connect Conversations – Online (Zoom) An honest panel discussion centering the identities and experiences of our friends and colleagues across the Latinx & Hispanic culture. Hosted by Cinder, we will continue to examine what equity and inclusion means for different and intersecting identities in these panel discussions throughout 2022. Our intention with these conversations is to interrogate the integrity and efficacy of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion programming in our workplaces and communities. We are curious to explore the question: Is Equity and Inclusion in the workplace and beyond? Please help us spread the word! |
