3rd USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Cloud Computing (HotCloud '11)
through Portland Marriott (Downtown)

Join us in Portland, OR, June 14–15, 2011, for the 3rd USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Cloud Computing. HotCloud brings together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry working on cloud computing technologies. Cloud computing has evolved over the years from a basic IT infrastructure (data centers) to platform as a service (PaaS), and it includes both software as a service (SaaS) and enabling services to be deployed on a hosted infrastructure (IaaS). We believe that cloud computing will benefit from close interaction between researchers and industry practitioners, so that the research can inform current deployments and deployment challenges can inform new research. In support of this, HotCloud will provide a forum for both academics and practitioners to share their experience, leverage each other's perspectives, and identify new/emerging "hot" trends in this important area.

Hackathons are participatory event. You don't show up to watch or to hang out; you show up to lead or to join a team of other developers to imagine, create, and build something cool and useful in the course of a single day. This may sound impossibly ambitious. It is not. You can get a lot done when you can ignore your inbox and simply focus on the task at hand. The ability to tap in to high-level services certainly helps, as does the fact that everyone shows up expecting to work.

Beers with Engineers
10 Barrel

A monthly gathering for Portland area tech junkies. More specifically, those focused on data, emerging technology, and general IT topics. Industry vets, IT pros, nerds, geeks, tech philosoraptors, whatever.... Whether 5 or 50 this is an awesome opportunity to get together and talk shop, learn from peers, or just have some beers and a good time.

No management, No selling, No recruiting, No problems. Talking to people about your product(s) or career networking is fine but people "leeching" on the attendance isn't cool so don't do it. Industry folks with expense cards typically cover festivities but this isn't a "sponsored" event and we don't intend to turn BwE into "powerpoint parties". Venue will be dynamic alternating between locations and if group size demands we'll book a location to support.

If you're new to the group or haven't been out in a while we're a pretty dynamic crowd and always have a lot of fun.

Docker Portland, OR - Habitat - Automation that travels with your applications
New Relic

One of the dreams of development is to build a software package once, then be able to deploy it anywhere. Come to this talk to learn how to create software packages that run (almost) anywhere. You will see how the same application can be run on bare metal, on a VM, or in a container - with everything needed to automate that application already built into the package itself. This even works with a mixed infrastructure - metal for your static compute heavy loads, vms for your persistent data stores, and ephemeral short lived containers for your applications managed by Kubernetes or other container scheduling services.

Agenda:

6:00 - Welcome, networking, and food

6:30 - Nell Shamrell-Harrington - "Habitat"

Come to this talk to learn how to build and deploy Habitat packages with the intelligence to self organize into topologies, no central orchestrator needed. Learn how the dream of platform agnostic and self organizing packages is fulfilled today and where it will evolve in the future.

Details:
Take yourself back to 1998, when the first websites were being built. What tool did they use? For many it was a tool like Dreamweaver: expensive, complex, on-premise software. Fast forward to 2018. What do people use now? Tools like Wordpress, Wix, Weebly and Shopify. These tools are cloud-based, pay-as-you-go, and simple yet powerful. Content creation for the 3D web (including AR and VR) is high friction today. Businesses have devices and problems to solve but the content creation tools feel like we’re stuck in the 90’s.

Kyle Roche, GM of AR/VR at Amazon Web Services, will discuss how AWS leverages their cloud offerings to simplify content creation for the 3D web. Amazon Sumerian allows non-3D experts to create AR and VR content using only a web browser. Content can be easily published to end-users who then decide how they want to consume the experience. Learn how you can develop dynamic, immersive customer engagements that can experienced via advertising signage, in-store retail displays, websites, mobile devices, or VR headsets. With Sumerian, you can build once and publish widely.
