    RSVP on meetup dot com

    Event Agenda:

There will be a main talk between 30 minutes to 1 hour followed by optional lighting talks. Pizza will be provided by New Relic.

Main Talk: Notes from the blue team by Elaine Laguerta

Hi! I'm a blue-team security engineer. I try to make it easier for devs to build software while balancing safety and security. In this talk I'll rant about some things I think you should know. What we won't talk about: the OWASP Top 10, how to do SQL injection, which hash functions are the most secure. I'll provide a list of links to answer questions like these! What we will talk about: A basic checklist for secure development, what new devs should learn, how experienced devs can stay up-to-date, and why a healthy team culture should be a core part of your security posture.

Lightning Talks: Lightning talks are talks up to 5 minutes in length on any topic that might interest other Python people.

    THIS MONTH:

    Measuring the Right Things

We’ve moved from waking someone up if a disk passed some arbitrary threshold to only paging off-hours when the business is impacted. Our lives have improved immensely because we learned how to measure the right things. Let’s take some of the lessons we’ve learned from monitoring and alerting and see if we can apply them to how we measure the humans in our systems. From who we see and don’t see as leaders to which candidates we think have the potential to be excellent contributors, let’s look at how we’ve been measuring humans and see if we are evaluating the right things.

Tiffany Longworth is a Site Reliability Engineer at Zapproved. She loves working at the intersection of systems and humans and cares deeply about ensuring systems work for the humans in them, not on the humans in them. She likes using her background as a Marine, her training as an English teacher, is a die hard karaoke-ist, and uses cat gifs as much as possible.

    DevOps: 2009 to 2019

In 2009, two Flickr engineers gave a presentation at O'Reilly's Velocity conference. The presentation is regarded as one of the seminal presentations in the DevOps movement. We will revisit Flickr’s engineering practices and discuss how DevOps has evolved over the past ten years.

Sean Sullivan is a Principal Software Engineer in Portland Oregon. He works on platform systems at Twilio. He is passionate about Scala, code generators, and automated delivery pipelines. Follow Sean on twitter: @tinyrobots

CHIFOO Event: “F.U.” Money, Courage, & Ethics In The Workplace

    New Relic

CHIFOO presents ""F#@K You" Money, Courage, & Ethics In The Workplace" with Elena Moon, Osage Orange!

Often defined as the wealth required to burn any bridge, it turns out F.U. money isn't a lifestyle replete with yachts and gold plated toilets. It's having enough money in the bank to be able to speak your mind and, if necessary, walk...to the next job. Learn how personal finances play a huge role in silencing us and how financial freedom through living simply can lead to finding courage, agency and voice at work.

About The Speaker Elena Moon (@Elena_Moon) is the founder of Osage Orange, a human-centered design studio. She has been doing a mix of research and design for the last 15 years and particularly enjoys socially and environmentally conscious projects. CHIFOO is celebrating its 25th anniversary all year long! Come join CHIFOO for our tenth speaker event for 2018's theme "Do the Right Thing- HCI Ethics: Where Do We Start?".

What happens to our brains when we’re rejected in social situations or made to feel less than? Surprisingly, the neuroscience behind these reactions is similar to that of our early ancestors - but their survival was at stake. Most of the threats that our brains now face involve inclusion ( or lack of) in our workplace. In this talk I will address diversity and inclusion, with a focus on inclusivity and the neuroscience behind it.

OWASP Portland Chapter Meeting - Security Internships: Bringing up the next generation of hackers

    New Relic

Anna Lorimer will present Security Internships: Bringing up the next generation of hackers

Software engineering internships are increasingly popular and are becoming an integral part of career development for newcomers to the tech scene. They’re also valuable to any organization because they give senior engineers the opportunity to pass on knowledge and make it easier to find full time hires down the road. While there’s plenty of information about how to run a software engineering internship, the same can’t be said for security internships. In this talk I’ll discuss how security internships differ from regular software engineering internships, how to find interns, and how to structure internships to set up both your organization and the intern(s) for success.

    Bio:

Anna Lorimer is an undergraduate student studying math and computer science at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Canada. She’s done 5 internships over the course of her undergraduate career and is currently doing her sixth with New Relic’s Product Security Team in Portland. She is also the co-founder of StarCon, a technology conference focused on the joy of technology and building a community around sharing technical knowledge.

    CHIFOO Event: Quantifying Qualitative Decisions

    New Relic

CHIFOO presents "Quantifying Qualitative Decisions" with Lynn Boyden, USC IT Services!

Lynn has developed an approach that engages the participants in a decision-making process. It helps them prioritize and evaluate the various possibilities, resulting in a quantified outcome. It's quick to set up and execute, and the participatory nature of the process generates buy-in and acceptance of the outcome. Lynn will walk you through the method and show you a few examples. We'll discuss some variations based on your setting and the type of decision you’re making, and then Lynn will field questions from the audience.

About the Speaker Lynn Boyden (@lrb23) trained as a librarian at UCLA and has worked for various agencies, Symantec and Yahoo!. She ran the Los Angeles office of FatDUX, where she numbered UCLA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the University of Illinois, and KBHome among her clients. New Relic FutureTalks PDX - Team health assessments: a way to understand yourself and improve all the things

    New Relic

Join us on Monday, May 14 for the next edition of FutureTalks featuring New Relic employees Brent Miller and Honey Darling unpacking the "Team Health Assessment" — an organizational practice we've just undertaken as part of our commitment to continual reinvention which will help us understand how teams work and how product is built at New Relic.

The best human achievements are team efforts. How do you know if your teams are healthy? It’s a complex problem, with no easy answers. Two years into a seemingly successful agile transformation at New Relic, we found ourselves wondering how well our teams had taken to the new system, and didn’t really know. We knew that execution was much improved. What we didn’t know was why. Did our leadership all magically turn into serious taskmasters? Did our engineers seriously level up? Did our product managers start making perfect decisions? In order to find out, we crafted a set of team health standards, conducted a facilitated self-assessment with each team, and then asked each team to put together a plan to improve their health. We learned a lot along the way, about how to understand team health, and also about the shape, function, and dysfunction within our org.

In this talk we will share our journey, help you understand how to create psychological safety around a team health assessment, and show the kinds of things that we learned about the org. We will examine the project from a high-level project flow perspective, from an organizational change perspective, and share one team’s experiences on the ground.

    --
Doors will open at 5:30 for networking with light food and drink before the program starts at 6pm. The program will conclude with a Q&A around 7:00pm.

    About our presenters:

    Brent Miller:
Brent is a botanist turned engineer turned agilist, whose work is now at the center of the spicy Venn diagram of humans, technology, and organizational design. He enjoys systems thinking and continuous improvement, and somehow continuously improved himself into his current career. He lives in Portland with his wife and two kitties.

    Honey Darling:
Honey has built strong teams in a number of companies. She's a thoughtful leader: results-focused, calm and directed, and someone who builds teams that work together in the same direction. She is passionate about technology and people, and especially the intersection between the two. Honey believes in the power of collaboration, creativity, and continuous improvement.

Abstract: No Estimates sounds crazy, but the reality actually isn’t so bad. My team at New Relic has been practicing a version of “No Estimates” alongside a variety of Agile techniques for about 8 months, and we’ve developed a solid track record of software delivery using it. We’ll take a look at how No Estimates works in an estimated world, how you really can track progress and commitments, and what that means to your team, your stakeholders, and your product delivery process. We’ll also take a look at projects that fit this model well, ones that don’t, and potential pitfalls we’ve encountered so far.

CHIFOO Event: Is Design Metrically Opposed?

    New Relic

CHIFOO presents "Is Design Metrically Opposed?" with Jared Spool, Center Centre & UIE!

The world of metrics and analytics have often been at odds with how designers work. Design is a process where we finely tune our intuition to create great user experiences. Yet, sometimes, what we think is best rivals the metrics. So which do we believe-our gut or the data?

In the world of measures, metrics, and Key Performance Indicators some practices, like the growth hacking approach to increasing Monthly Average Users (MAUs), have hurt the online experience of Instagram and LinkedIn. While alternatives to satisfaction and net promoter score give insight into the design process and help designers have better instincts.

If you’re ready to talk to your teams about what you really need, help management interpret the data, and create analytical experiments that provide design insights, don’t miss this talk.

About the Speaker Jared Spool (@jmspool) is a co-founder of Center Centre and the founder of UIE.

While he led UIE, the industry research firm he started in 1988, the field of UX design emerged and Jared helped define what makes UX designers successful all over the world. In 2016, with Dr. Leslie Jensen-Inman, he opened Center Centre, a new school in Chattanooga, TN to create the next generation of industry-ready UX Designers. They created a revolutionary approach to vocational training, infusing Jared's decades of UX experience with Leslie's mastery of experience-based learning methodologies.

CHIFOO Event: Coding is for Coders: Why Designers Should Learn Business and What You Can Do About It

    New Relic

CHIFOO presents "Coding is for Coders: Why Designers Should Learn Business and What You Can Do About It" with Patrick Neeman, icertis!

Most designers may have heard something like, "learn to code like your life depends on it.” While empathy for the engineering process is important, and that mythical designer / coder may exist, in general, this advice is misguided. Bad for you, bad for your team, bad for your organization, and most importantly, bad for your career.

In this talk, Patrick will explain why you should not learn to code and instead focus on learning the in’s an out’s of business. He’ll cover:

    • Why learning about business is a good idea for any user experience professional

    • Why most businesses secretly want designers to learn business

    • What aspects of business are important to user experience

    • How you can take action to learn it in your organization

    • Where you can apply what you have learned to your current job, and your future jobs

    About the Speaker

Patrick Neeman (@usabilitycounts) (mostly) in Seattle, Washington. He is currently Sr. Director of User Experience at icertis. He was Director of Product Design at Apptio, and Director of User Experience at Jobvite. After a complete redesign of the application, Jobvite received a Webby award for employment, and the Deloitte What Works award.

Write The Docs PDX - Action! Not Just Words
    javascript

    New Relic

    Abstract

Many technical writers and documentarians benefit immensely after attending relevant conferences. These events offer networking opportunities, access to Subject Matter Experts, and impetus to pursue novel solutions to work conundrums.

The annual Write the Docs conferences offer glimpses of what is possible in my work environment. After Write the Docs NA 2017 event, I initiated several new projects/processes to elevate the state of internal communication, raise awareness for customer-facing documents, and organize tech communication community at work. The initial results have been encouraging.

We’ll explore how ideas from past and present Write the Docs events have acted as catalysts to overcome challenges and obstacles. We’ll also discuss why the conference is relevant for tech writers, regardless of their industry affiliations.

    Bio

Mo Nishiyama is a Technical Writer at Oregon Health & Science University’s Information Technology Group. His professional passions include transforming dense engineer-speak into customer-friendly support articles, cultivating a community of tech writers in the workplace, promoting a human-centric work culture, and sharing career/life experiences through public speaking.

Portland Ruby Brigade - 15th Anniversary, with cupcakes!
    ruby

    New Relic

We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. THERE WILL ALSO BE CUPCAKES. This month's meeting is on the 27th floor.

    PRESENTATIONS at 7pm

Main Presentation by Ruby Hero Coraline Ada Ehmke: "Metaphors are Similes. Similes Are Like Metaphors."

Making a special trip from her hometown of Chicago, Coraline is our very special 15th anniversary guest! She'll be giving us a special treat: her well-received keynote from Rubyfuza! Here's the abstract:

Language matters more than you think. And the more you think, the more you need language. This talk explores the connections between language and problem solving, how the metaphors that we use can expand or constrain our thinking, and how it all relates to our identities as software developers and as human beings. Along the way we'll learn about linguistics, category theory, Russian colors, gigantic bridges in France, and how to pronounce the word "lacuna". And you'll definitely have some things to think about. Hopefully, in new ways.

Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month! And EXTRA SPECIAL thanks to New Relic for sponsoring Coraline's trip to come hang out with us!

ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 5th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 27th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.

It’s understood that great documentation is essential to use software properly, but in a world with ever-changing specifications and hot new features, how can documentation remain fresh and easily accessible? We’ll discuss how New Relic has approached this, from the process of making sure the latest correct information is available, to updating the interface to make it easy for users to find exactly what they’re looking for, to analyzing our users’ habits and feedback to provide necessary tools and updates in the future.

We’ll take a stroll down memory lane to visit some of the early layouts of the documentation site,  and we’ll discuss the present iteration of the site and the UI changes that were made and why. We’ll also look into the future and provide a glimpse into what we can expect from the site in the months to come.

Write The Docs PDX - Internet Archive: Universal Access. Open APIs (Speaker: VM Brasseur)
    javascript

    New Relic

With tens of millions of items in its collections, Internet Archive is one of the largest libraries in the world. It provides free and open access to all of its materials to anyone with an internet connection, making it a treasure trove for researchers, historians, and curious individuals.

Of course, having a collection that large doesn’t help anyone if it’s difficult to access. To help with this, Internet Archive has released a number of open APIs and tools to allow people to upload and download items, as well as data mine the metadata for the entire collection.

    In this session we will:

Give you a tour of Internet Archive and its collections
Introduce you to the APIs and tools you can use to access and contribute to the Archive
    * Show examples of how other people and institutions are using the Archive

    Speaker Bio:

In VM (aka Vicky)'s nearly 20 years in the tech industry she has been an analyst, programmer, product manager, software engineering manager, director of software engineering, and C-level technical business and open source strategy consultant. Vicky is the winner of the Perl White Camel Award (2014) and the O'Reilly Open Source Award (2016).

Vicky occasionally blogs at http://anonymoushash.vmbrasseur.com, often writes and is a community moderator for opensource.com, and frequently tweets at @vmbrasseur.

Write The Docs PDX - Learn About The Wacom User Help System
    javascript

    New Relic

Wacom -- a company which develops Pen Input hardware -- needed a user help system to move beyond static PDFs. Their solution was to separate product-specific PDFs into a series of, mostly common, HTML topic pages. These HTML file were, in turn, processed into a web deliverable package via Python scripting.

The solution is complex, as the Wacom system includes interrelationships between 150+ topics across over 30 products and 14 languages.

The solution required “a more technical Tech Writer” -- as it required knowledge of HTML
    Python
    JavaScript
    Excel Macros

Wacom implemented their solution by integrating their tech writer in their Engineering team. They also included a dedicated engineering resource to support design and development of their technical docs.

CHIFOO Event: Inclusion Before Diversity: Creating a Culture of Learning and Encouraging Getting it Wrong

    New Relic

CHIFOO presents "Inclusion Before Diversity: Creating a Culture of Learning and Encouraging Getting it Wrong" with Ivana McConnell, Senior UI/UX Designer at Customer.io!

Why tech companies should focus on achieving inclusion first, attending to employees’ specific self-care needs in order to create a platform for diversity to flourish, and better software made. People are chaotic, and product design has to account for them— this is challenging, and often solved by doing research and testing.

About the Speaker Ivana (@IvanaMcConnell) was born in Sarajevo to a civil engineer-turned-translator and a UN Logistics Officer-turned-software engineer. She arrived in Vancouver via Croatia, Scotland, and Toronto, and has previously made a living as a rock climbing instructor and video game tester. These days she’s a senior UX designer at Customer.io, and is most interested in the intersections of technology, identity, and data.

    javascript

    New Relic

NOTE: We'll be in New Relic's newest meeting room, on the 27th floor

The Write The Docs NA conference returns to Portland in May, and the deadline for proposals is February 10 (midnight PST).

For the third year, we'll give people who want to propose a chance to test things out, either by speaking briefly, or by brainstorming their proposals.

FYI, O'Reilly has an excellent guide to creating conference proposals, "Propose, Prepare, Present". If you navigate to http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920027096.do, you can get the eBook version for free.

We'll start with a brief networking session from 6-6:30.

At 6:30, I'll make a few announcements. Anyone who wants to try out a "preview" of a conference talk (5-10 min), or just present their draft proposal for comments, can speak to the group (or ask questions) after that.
