CAT BarCamp is a free unconference hosted by the Computer Action Team at Portland State University every year. BarCamps are free conferences where the people who show up on the day of decide what the conference is about. No scheduled talks are planned beforehand by the organizers, making the range of talks and topics covered each year entirely unique. Timeslots are posted in an accessible place and the attendants are given (fairly) free reign to post and choose which talks they would like to attend or give. We only ask that topics be respectful and PG-rated. The CAT at PSU is an ops training organization that has secured the venue and is organizing the event. We expect many job-hungry students skilled in development, computer science, operations, and everything else to be in attendance at this event and we want to enable as many connections as possible. Because the CAT is a tech organization and has ties to the larger tech community, many speakers will likely give tech-oriented talks.

Join Pixel Arts Game Education in a celebration of its volunteers, milestones, and community!

We will be hosting a free screening of Indie Game: The Movie, followed by a short intermission and tournaments for Samurai Gunn, Super Hexagon, and BLOODBALL. Winners in each of these indie game tournaments will receive prizes!

This event is free, all ages, and open to the public. Film and games are not rated.

Know Your City is a nonprofit organization that connects people to place. To fulfill our mission, we organize tours, lectures, publications and youth programs. Our programs engage the public through experiential learning, creative placemaking, policy-making and culture. More online at: knowyourcity.org.

The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) provides grants for artists, organizations and schools; manages an internationally acclaimed public art program; raises money for the arts through workplace giving; provides workshops and technical assistance for artists; and oversees a program to integrate arts into the curriculum in public schools.

To create a new form of access for the public art collections RACC manages for the City and County we partnered with Elsewise Media’s Matt Blair who was introduced to us through the City’s “CivicApps” program.  Matt’s wonderful Public Art PDX app for the iPhone is powered by the Filemaker database that RACC’s Public Art Collections Department constructed and maintains.

The mission of the Oregon Nikkei Endowment is to preserve and honor the history and culture of Japanese Americans in the Pacific Northwest, to educate the public about the Japanese American experience during World War II, and to advocate for the protection of civil rights for all Americans. Japantown PDX is a GPS-enabled app which guides users on a walking tour beyond the walls of our museum, the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center located in Portland’s historic Old Town neighborhood, and into the heart of the city’s pre and post-war Japanese American community.

GammaPoint is a the Portland based mobile app development company. GammaPoint’s expertise lies in creating navigation apps. GammaPoint has also created a web based platform App4Tour.com where anyone who is interested in creating a field tour or city tour guide app can sign up  and submit the content to create a native customized geo-locations based app without any knowledge of computer programming. Japantown PDX app was a pilot project between UofPortland students, Oregon Nikkei and GammaPoint. With its expertise in navigation apps, GammaPoint created a geo-aware app for Oregon Nikkei and also was able to test their App4Tour.com beta platform.  Explore Portland Oregon’s historic Japantown with this user-friendly walking tour app. Also check out some of the other popular apps from GammaPoint such as Extra Mile and WeatherRun.

Matt Blair creates apps and websites that enrich our connections to culture, place, and each other. He led development of iOS apps that were selected by Apple for their iPad Apps of the Year collections in 2012 and 2013, and also designed and built a poetry editor for iPad called Line & Verse. His Portland-based work includes projects around heritage trees, public art, history, and poetry boxes. All four of these projects aspire to use technology to encourage the exploration of the real world.

Presenters

Todd Mayberry currently serves as the director of collections and exhibits at the Oregon Nikkei Endowment. He has fourteen years of experience in the cultural sector having worked at Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, Minnesota Historical Society and Walker Art Center.

Teena Jain is the co-founder of GammaPoint. She has over 18 years of software development experience. She has been working in mobile apps industry long before the apps became household name. Teena has worked for PalmSource and many startups before venturing out for entrepreneurship. She also brings UI/UX experience to GammaPoint team.

Marc Moscato is responsible for directing the organization, managing program committees and guiding the organization’s mission. Previous to KYC, he has worked for Museum of Contemporary Craft, City Club of Portland, Microcosm Publishing, Peripheral Produce and Squeaky Wheel. He received his MS in Arts & Administration from University of Oregon.

Keith Lachowicz and his team oversee a collection of 1900 artworks—everything from small prints and drawings to 170+ large scale outdoor sculptures. As technology expands to provide new ways to interact with art collections, museum and public art professionals have become the on-point staff for gathering, organizing and supplying the data that search and access applications are constructed with.

Matt Blair has been a technology consultant for seventeen years. When not staring at screens, he spends his time reading old books on paper, and stomping through the mud in Forest Park. He is also a volunteer writing workshop facilitator for Write Around Portland, and joined their board in 2013.

Collin Oldham: The RT (radio trowel) and The Cellomobo

Collin spent the 2005-2006 academic year at Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) where began to develop the electronic musical instruments he is presenting today.

The RT (radio trowel) uses a capacitive sensor array based on Max Mathew's radio baton to detect the position of the trowel on the playing surface. The trowel's movements control sound synthesis parameters, including filters which process live sound from a contact mic attached to the trowel.

The cellomobo is a computer music instrument that attempts to model the behavior of a bowed string. It gives haptic feedback to the bow at audio rate to simulate the stick-slip action of a bowed string. This feedback stream finds it way back into the audio stream, creating a unique hybrid of digital and analog synthesis.

Collin Oldham is a cellist who has performed around the world with such varied and luminous artists as Placido Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa, Rosemary Clooney and Aretha Franklin. He's active as a session player, and has recorded with the Decemberists, Richmond Fontaine, and Elliott Smith, among many others.

Shelly Farnham: Dorkbot Dorkbot Dorkbot + Seattle

I am that rare combination of geek, artist, and scientist and when I first met Dorkbot Seattle I felt like I'd finally found my people -- where technology is artistic medium, science is art, and geeking out is just a whole lot of fun. My one complaint was that Seattle Dorkbots were not collaborating enough, and when I took over as Seattle's "Dork Overlord" it was my main mission -- to cultivate the creative geek community.

In this talk, I will review the best of Dorkbot Seattle's art, geekery, and science, and discuss how we have worked to increase cross-disciplinary collaboration through our meetings, workshops, and art shows.

Shelly Farnham received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology at UW in 1999, after which she worked at Microsoft Research for seven years studying community technology. A few years ago she quit to join the start up world, and is now co-founder of Pathable (professional networking for events). In her "spare" time she paints, does collaborative installations, and instigates people to have more fun creating stuff.

Steve Davee: Not to kill a thought: The impact of language on curiosity, creativity and scientific inquiry.

This talk explores how easy it is, even with the best of intentions, to stifle creative thought and true learning when it comes to working with children in the areas of science, math and engineering. We will investigate examples of simple but powerful changes in language, with the intention of provoking the best of creative potential and shared inquiry.

Steve Davee is a math and science teacher at Opal Charter School and a Media Specialist for the Center for Children’s Learning at the Portland Children’s Museum. He is a recovering Biochemist with a background in physics and over 20 years of volunteer and work experience in education.

If you are new to Coderetreats, know that Coderetreat.org is a self-organized, volunteer-led organization dedicated to enabling software developers to help each other improve their craft and teaming skills. Software developers of all sorts gather with their machines, IDEs and the ready-to-code Conway's Game of Life. A Coderetreat facilitator assists the developers during several 45-minute sessions throughout the day. Iman Bilal, Tracie Lee, and Jean Richardson will be teaming up to facilitate this Coderetreat.

We spend quite a bit of time at work, so why not create a community and a work culture that supports meaningful relationships? This month’s theme is Work, Culture and Community. To facilitate this discussion our conversation starter will be: What is one positive way to create a positive work culture?

While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community. -- An employee of Autodesk will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities. -- Anusha Neelam, PDXWIT Scholarship recipient will talk about developing relationships at work and in the community -- Paris Hyun, PDXWIT Scholarship recipient, will talk about creating the work culture we deserve

A few people around Portland have been talking about trying to have one of these new-fangled unconferences focused on cloud computing. Let's get together and see if we can pull it off. We'll have an initial meeting to discuss some ideas, figure out possible venues, timing, sponsorship needs, etc. Come prepared with ideas and suggestions.

Calagator is an all-volunteer, open-source project to develop a calendar aggregation system for the Portland technical community. For further details about the project, see calagator.org

The Calagator team has made excellent headway since we've started this project a few months ago. I'm pleased to announce our preliminary roadmap to version 1.0: http://code.google.com/p/calagator/wiki/Roadmap

If you're a designer, writer, or programmer, we could use your help in designing new UIs, writing documentation, and adding interesting features.

We have two code sprints coming up: 1. Wednesday 6/18 at Backspace, from noon until it's time to leave for Ignite Portland. 2. Saturday 6/21 at CubeSpace, from 10am until 6pm, although we often end up moving to the Side Door and staying later.

You do not need to stay for the entire code sprint -- stay as long as you'd like. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if you haven't attended a code sprint before. If you want to help with programming, experience with Ruby on Rails and agile development is helpful, but you're welcome to come even if you're new to these because this is a great way to learn.

Being unemployed creates financial and emotional strain on a person. Ken provides an uplifting and positive perspective on how to protect yourself and your family during this challenging time and to financially position yourself to thrive when your next career happens – and it will happen….. Ken speaks from his own experience of job loss and personal re-invention. He will cover debt, cash flow, insurance, taxes, investing, retirement and estate planning – and, of course, your questions.

Ken Carraro’s career has included the following positions from most recent to oldest: Independent Financial Advisor, Insurance broker, Corporate executive at Tektronix, Xerox and Planar Systems, International Banker, Start-up entrepreneur, Economist at the Federal Reserve and Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa. Ken is originally from Chicago with degrees from the University of Illinois and Cornell University.

For many years the Rose City SPIN (Software Process Improvement Network) has provided a forum for networking and industry speaker presentations to the software development community in the Portland, OR area. If you have enjoyed SPIN presentations in the past and want to see them continue, NOW is the time to step forward. We need your input and help. This meeting will discuss how this group will move forward. Less than 30% of Oregon High School offer any type of programming classes. Computer science is a vital driver in today’s global innovation economy. Without CS in high schools, our students are missing out on essential computational skills that will help them succeed in any career they wish to pursue, and professional skills that could lead to an economically secure future.

Action We’re Taking:

Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS Program recruits, trains, mentors, and places passionate technology professionals into high school classrooms as volunteer instructors and teaching assistants. These volunteers bring subject matter expertise and will join an existing high school teacher to teach computer science together. TEALS provides training for both parties, rigorous curricula, and opportunities for students to continue their education outside of the classroom. Are you a computer science professional who wants to help develop the next generation of Oregon techies? Hack Oregon Community Summit and Project Season Kick-Off

A Design Thinking Session with Developers, Designers, Government, Industry and Donuts

Hack Oregon opens its doors twice a year to assemble interdisciplinary focus teams of volunteers to build open-data resources on important themes in Oregon. Our projects take roughly three months to complete, and there are staggered start times for different roles within our build cycle.

This is a special event to brainstorm goals, build relationships, and create a shared vision for the next cycle of projects.

At the Summit we'll introduce new themes for projects, assemble teams, and collaborate with fantastic context experts and mentors through guided design thinking sessions.

We won't be coding this afternoon, but it's a exciting space for cross-pollination between disciplines while we take the afternoon to collaborate, plan, and constructively brainstorm.

Some of you will get started hacking the following week, and others we'll see 6-8 weeks later when we start the visual and storytelling phase.

Everyone is welcome, and we can't wait to meet you!

Every year, ChickTech gives 150 local girls the opportunity to attend a weekend long inspiring technology camp. Girls are nominated by their teachers, then surprised with acceptance packets that illuminate their potential. Join a group of ChickTech volunteers in stuffing acceptance packets! We will gather at the ChickTech office, eat light snacks, and chat while we work together to inspire the next generation of technologists. First-time volunteers and people of all genders are welcome!
