What: Part 1: A Network Relay via Cloud Instance ; Part 2: Retro Linux Tape Recovery Show and Telll
Where: 5500 SW Dosch Rd, Portland
When: Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 7pm
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom

The first part is going to be a description of how I relay network connections from the Internet to my low-volume home-based email server to evade potential ISP blockages.

The second part is going to be a show and tell about my resurrection of an ancient Linux version in order to recover data from Quarter Inch Cartridge tapes and ancillary topics. It will also include a short demo of my MS-DOS 5.0 environment also (resurrected from tape) the month before I installed Linux for the first time in December 1992.

About Russell:

I am a person for whom the Year of the Linux Desktop started in 1992 and has continued annually, uninterrupted. I worked for a couple decades in scientific data management and analysis. Since 2005, I have been involved with the Personal Telco Project, a volunteer-based 501c3 non-profit trying to unscrew telecommunications policy in the Portland metropolitan area. I did a short stint in data management for an Oceanographic organization when it was housed at OH&SU. I also volunteer at Portland State Aerospace Society working on their OreSat program. My name, misspelled in glorious circuit board silkscreen, has literally been in orbit for most of the last 2 years. I have done a bunch of PLUG talks over the years.

Can we design a warning system for democracy?
Virtual

Portland Design Thinkers is thrilled to announce our next event with Neal Moore: Can we design a warning system for democracy?

Individual changes gradually add up to something bigger; but in a multivariate world, how are we assessing and communicating gradual evolution of the big picture, and are we instilling urgency and direction with our storytelling?

In the 50’s, The Bulletin of The Atomic Scientists unveiled the Doomsday Clock to galvanize attention to the threat of nuclear war; more recently they’ve attempted to alert people against other existential threats like climate change.

The US has seen troubling developments in politics and society, leading to concern across a political spectrum that we are either heading toward authoritarianism or already in it. We’ll explore the challenge of designing a “Doomsday Clock” for democracy.

Turning Empathy into Action – This Is How Digital Products Attain True Success
Virtual

Portland Design Thinkers is thrilled to announce our next event with Damon Gaumont: Turning Empathy into Action – This Is How Digital Products Attain True Success

Turning empathy into action in digital product experiences is crucial for creating products that resonate with users, provide value, and foster positive relationships between users and businesses. It not only leads to better user satisfaction but also contributes to the success and reputation of the product and the company behind it. In this talk, Damon will cover why it is so important, various methods to achieve it, how to measure it, and how to ensure it is continually improved.

About our speaker: Damon currently guides brands accountably through the creation of digital experiences by tapping his extensive background and expertise in brand building, creative strategy, and experience design. His belief that all brand extensions start best with a clearly articulated vision is the first step in an accountable process that culminates with beautifully usable and inherently humanized branded digital experiences.

Connection. That’s what we all want, but sometimes, it’s not so easy. Join PDXWIT, host Marmoset and Out in Tech’s Digital Corps team for a panel discussion and find out how building websites globally takes on a bigger and better definition of community and connection.

Out in Tech Digital Corps provides web services to LGBTQ+ activists and social entrepreneurs around the world. Since 2017, they’ve built 150 WordPress.com websites for 150 extraordinary LGBTQ+ grassroots organizations in 60 countries.

Facilitated by Crystal Sincoff, you will hear from Manu Gomez, from the Digital Corps team and a website build volunteer, Alex Hare, about their experiences working with Brown Girl Woke and other non-profit organizations to build their custom sites.

The founder of Brown Girl Woke, Doris Tulafau, will join us from Samoa along with their IT & Website Manager, Robbie Allen, to share what it was like working with the Digital Corp to create their website that is empowering girls to lead the future in the Samoa community.

You will also hear from our host Marmoset and find out if they have open positions.

We look forward to seeing you at this fun-filled, semi-global event and to find out how you can be a part of creating a larger, connected community by using your skills to volunteer with the digital corp team and join the revolution around the world!

How to create frameworks and strategies for equity within startups
Online

Join PIE for a conversation with PIE alum Quincy Brown about how to create frameworks and strategies for equity within startups.

"As startups we have a chance to lead with equity as we develop our business plans, marketing, customer outreach, and the like," said Quincy. "From my perspective, equity includes including women, BIPOC, youth, elderly, and everyone undeserved by policies and programming."

Quincy is a young, native transportation planner from Portland. He began is transportation planning career volunteering at TriMet working directly with the HR department where he served as a volunteer translator and helped recruit Latinx employees.

Following his degree from Claremont McKenna College, Quincy engaged in post bac work at Berkeley in Sustainability and the Built Environment and City and Regional Planning. He won best research in Human Rights from the Mgrublian Center for Rights and was Claremont McKenna's first Mellon Mays undergraduate fellow, a fellowship for minority students interested in becoming PhD professors.

His research has consistently focused on creating sustainable and equitable planning and programming that support and involve people of color, people with disabilities, and low income residents. In all pursuits, Quincy is passionate about bringing equitable and sustainable practices to everyone regardless age, race, gender, sexuality, or belief.
