abstract:
The Curry-Howard Isomorphism motivates the well known proofs-as-programs interpretation. Under that interpretation, sufficiently different proofs yield different programs. This work is a step toward extracting monadic programs from proofs. In working with the list monad as a motivating example, we discovered that the standard type bind
(M a -> (a -> M b) -> M b) does not contain enough information to allow many proofs to go through. For lists, an implicit assumption on the function of type ( a -> M b) is that the input of type a is an element of the list of type M b. We developed an new typeclass of epsilon-monads to be able to strengthen the function type. Epsilon-monads are monads that support a membership predicate. Epsilon-monads enabled the development of a bind-induction proof rule which allows the extraction of monadic programs using the bind operator. Also, epsilon monads allow for extensional specifications of monadic programs. We used the Coq theorem prover to formalize the definitions and to prove many properties of the formalization. This is joint work with Hadi Shafe’i.
bio:
James Caldwell is Professor and Head of the Computer Science Department at the University of Wyoming. He earned his PhD from Cornell in the Nuprl group advised by Robert Constable. Before moving to the University of Wyoming in 1998, he was a researcher in the formal methods group at the NASA Langley Research center. He moved to NASA from the Electric Corporate R&D center in Schenectady, NY where he was first exposed to formal verification. He has MS and BS degrees in computer science from SUNY Albany. Before coming to computer science he studied painting and sculpture at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Refactoring for Asynchronous Execution on Mobile

To improve responsiveness, developers often use asynchronous programming. In the post-PC era, asynchronous programming is even more in demand because mobile and wearable devices have limited resources and access the network excessively. One current development task is refactoring long-running, blocking synchronous code (for example, accessing the Web, a cloud, a database, or a file system) into nonblocking asynchronous code. This talk describes the refactorings that improve responsiveness, along with the obstacles of using asynchrony. It also presents the challenges of retrofitting asynchrony and presents program analyses and transformations and a growing, practical toolset and resources for retrofitting asynchrony.
Speaker
Danny Dig- Assistant Professor in the School of EECS at Oregon State University and an Adjunct Professor at University of Illinois
He published over 50 journal and conference papers on refactoring, of which five won awards at top Software Engineering conferences. According to Google Scholar, his publications have been cited 2200+ times. His PhD dissertation on API refactoring won the David Kuck Outstanding PhD dissertation award at U. of Illinois, the First Prize at the interdisciplinary ACM Student Research Competition Grand Finals, and the First Prize at the ACM SIGPLAN SRC. He wrote the world’s first open-source refactoring engine for Java (which was downloaded over 17,000 times in 2001).
Some of his other refactoring tools are shipping with the official release of Eclipse, NetBeans, or VisualStudio IDE and are used by millions of Java and C# developers. He regularly teaches on the topic of refactoring at summer schools, conference tutorials, and
technical courses in industry.

<b>Don't Change My Chainsaw: Challenges in designing a tool for a skeptical audience</b>
In this presentation, Michael Oilar (MDC Research) will talk about a project involving research for a new battery-powered chainsaw design. They tested several iterations, from paper prototypes to high fidelity models. Their research revealed conflicting needs of different user audiences, as well as some resistance to change. Michael will talk about how they worked to resolve those conflicts in the final design.

This is intended as a general-purpose hack session where folks with a little more experience writing/using Rust or who have an open source project or two that could use new contributors are encouraged to invite newcomers to hack-a-long for a few hours. There will be no specific topic or presentation, just a bunch of nerds nerding out on a (presumably) rainy Saturday afternoon.
Just to be clear, this is intended for all levels of programming/rust experience:
* Folks with more experience will benefit by possibly gaining new contributors for their projects.
* Folks with little/no experience will benefit from direct guidance working on a specific feature/bug in an existing project.
Recommendations for those with projects in mind:
Since we are asking that some of you come prepared with a project or two in mind that could benefit from additional contributors, the following will help:
* Post a comment on this [meetup.com] event with a link to the open source repository that you would like to invite people to work on.
* Create a list of issues that your project(s) could use help on. If you use Github as a project management tool, a github issue for each bug/feature/improvement you have in mind would be immensely helpful as a way to establish continuity between you and your new contributors after this meetup.
* Keep in mind the varying levels of skill/experience other folks might have and be prepared to offer some relatively low-hanging fruit in addition to more difficult tasks.
Also, don't let your lack of experience with programming/rust or lack of ownership over a particular project prevent you from proposing a project to work on...I personally have very little Rust experience and no projects of my own but know of a couple projects that could benefit from new contributors!

What happens when you “fake it till you make it” and then … don't make it? Rarely do you hear about the failures of entrepreneurs until they are distant memories. Kronda will share some hard lessons learned in the past year. What happened, why, and what she learned from it.
<h3>Our Presenter, Kronda Adair</h3>
Kronda Adair is the founder of <a href="http://karveldigital.com/">Karvel Digital</a>, a WordPress consultancy and development business. In addition to developing websites, Kronda gives business owners the training they need to own and manage their digital presence.
She is a regular speaker at WordPress meetups and Wordcamps and has been invited to speak at Ada Developer Academy, Beyond the Code, Open Source Bridge, Lesbians Who Tech Summit, and others. She has given talks on WordPress deployment processes, successful site planning, starting your own business, and more. Her latest project is a <a href="http://karveldigital.com/website-guide">book for business owners</a> on managing your website and other digital assets, to be released early 2016.
When she’s not working, she can be found enjoying time at home with her wife and two cats, reading dead-tree books, riding one of her five bikes, or enjoying the postcard vistas of the state of Oregon.

# Wait a minute, did you say "Research Party"??
## Meta-data research might sound boring, but you're wrong! IT'S COOL!
Hack Oregon is a non-profit working to build intelligent data-driven storytelling software for important, and often complex, issues facing Oregon. Our projects are designed on the foundation of publicly available data, but we know that sometimes data needs a human touch to feel personal.
This season, we're working on five projects, all made by the loving hands and minds of our volunteer community. Our technical teams are already hard at work, but we need a few extra hands on deck to add additional data to make our projects the best they can be. If you're curious about Hack Oregon, have a passion for transparency, or have ever wanted to be part of a tech projects without having to code-- this is the event for you! We're looking for a room full of motivated volunteers who are interested in participating in a large-scale, open-sourced data project. No technical skills needed--- all you need is a computer and google, and together we can build a more intelligent software.
Background and project details will be presented at the start of the event. If we're successful, we'll be able to show you some of the impact of your work and have new insight by the end of the day!
And, as always, we'll fill you full of pizza and coffee and good vibes :)
