#The Completely Distributed Web
**› Please RSVP via Eventbrite [HERE](http://bit.ly/1p5FuhZ)**
The web has unified the entire world into a single medium of communication, standardizing both how we distribute and present information. This dropped the cost of publishing to almost nothing, an innovation that took a sledgehammer to the top-down economic, political, and cultural control over distribution of information. As a result of liquifying information and making it more egalitarian and accessible, the web has become the engine of the information society, improving our access to information in previously unimaginable ways.
But the web's early promise of being open, independent and free is starting to break down as governments scramble to control and censor it, and corporations compete to centralize and monopolize it. Between NSA dragnets, Chinese firewalls, Google super-datacenters, net neutrality extortion, Facebook's work on a private "Free Basics" Internet, and an increasingly hysterical political culture, is it too early to put the free, open web on the endangered species list?
In response to concerns about the future of online expression, hacktivists are fighting back, writing the code to build what could become the next version of the web. For lack of a better name, I'm calling it the Completely Distributed Web: a mix of existing technologies (IPv6, Tor) with some really big new ideas (Hyperboria, Namecoin, IPFS) that combine to create a new version of the web that's permanently resistant to centralization, censorship and control.
It sounds like cyberpunk fiction, but it's real, and people have already started using it. I will introduce you to the technology, show the innovations that made it possible, and our plans to turn Neocities into the first-ever distributed web host. I'll wrap up with a live demonstration of the distributed web that you'll be able to try using your own laptop.
*Kyle Drake is a Portland-based tech entrepreneur and the founder of Neocities, a project to restore the lost individual creativity of the web. Kyle focuses his work on sustainable startups and bleeding-edge emerging technologies.*
##Details

Evaluating and Improving Team Happiness
Roll back
| description |

This topic came from a conversational path last month's pub lunch conversation took.
What tools and techniques do you use to measure team happiness? Do you do anything at all? Is there a solution you've found you can't live without?
Has there been something you've discovered that has a large impact on team happiness? Maybe there's a better place to spend money on than sodas and snacks.
And why have a happier team? Do they deliver better results? Or stick around longer? Or some other reason?
Come with your ideas, examples, experiments, hopes, dreams, and conundrums. Come with your friends and colleagues. We're a friendly bunch and only bite during a full moon which isn't due again until the 21st.
We'll be in the back. RSVP's not required but very much appreciated to [email protected]. It helps us determine whether to move the furniture.

If you have an iPhone, Android Device, or iPad, you’re holding a powerful creative tool, right in the palm of your hand. From sketching, to retouching, to creating production ready assets, you’ll soon discover that you can do much more than just take pictures or surf the Web on that device. In this workshop, you’ll see how Adobe mobile apps are part of your creative process, give you more freedom, and get more out of the devices you already have.
What you’ll learn:
We’ll begin by turning photos on your device into color themes, custom brushes, vector graphics and Looks you use and work with in your projects right on your Apple or Android device. You’ll see how easy it is to:
Use Adobe’s free mobile apps to create usable assets right from your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone with just a photo or an image.
Make use of integrated apps that let you take initial concepts and send them directly to your favorite desktop apps to perfect and refine.
Use your Creative Cloud Libraries to save, store, and access assets throughout your creative process.
Be amazed at how much you can accomplish on a tiny screen.
Learn how the Adobe mobile apps leverage CreativeSync so that the work you do on your mobile device is instantly available for you to use in desktop apps like Photoshop, and Illustrator.
Discover the magic of exploring ideas on a touch screen and do things you would never be able to do with pen and paper.
You’ll also have an opportunity to ask all of your of questions about the Creative Cloud desktop and mobile apps.

Lock Picking Workshops
Roll back
| description |

The local chapter of TOOOL (The Open Organization Of Lockpickers) hosts monthly gatherings for lock picking on third-Thursdays, 7-9p at Ctrl-H.
We supply beginners lessons, advice, picks, locks and calming words to the totally new. No experience needed. We also have challenge locks and security pinned progressives for the more experienced. You don't have to bring anything (but if you do, be sure to paint, etch or otherwise mark your stuff so it doesn't get mixed up). You don't even have to be sure that learning how to pick locks is a good idea. We will talk about that too! This meeting will include an introduction presentation covering the basics of why people pick locks, what the rules are and how to pick a standard pin-tumbler lock. There will be lots of hands-on time to practice what you learn. Even if you have never done this before, you will be amazed how quickly you can advance through the progressively pinned practice locks.
This Google calendar lists all of our local events:

And we post reminders to this Google Group:

Code Oregon Labs: Animating Websites
Roll back
| description |
Code Fellows invites online learners of all stripes to Code Oregon Labs!
Last month we focused on coding for responsive websites, now let’s make ‘em dance! Gaston Figueroa of Uncorked Studios will kick off this month's session with a demo on coding for animation.
The 30 min. talk/demo will focus on HTML, CSS, & JavaScript. Tutors are knowledgeable in these and other stacks.
After the animation demo, it'll be open lab as usual! Together with Code Oregon and generous volunteers from the #pdxtech community, Code Fellows is happy to host this event. Each month, our goal is a 6:1 tutor-to-learner ratio, and we provide free pizza and beverages. |

After the animation demo, it'll be open lab as usual! Together with Code Oregon and generous volunteers from the #pdxtech community, Code Fellows is happy to host this event. Each month, our goal is a 6:1 tutor-to-learner ratio. |

Portland Puppet User Group Meeting
Roll back
| description |
Please join us for an evening of Puppet talks!
We hope you'll join us for the next Puppet User Group meeting. We'll have a talk on Upgrading Puppet Agents with Less Magic (puppetlabs-puppet_agent).
Upgrading the version of a Puppet agent can be simple: create a package resource with the desired version. However, that only works with a few package managers, and you have to find the package repositories hosting those packages. Then there’s Puppet 4; upgrading to Puppet 4 comes with a lot of changes. It can be daunting to find the changes necessary to ensure your agent will talk to your Puppet master after upgrading to Puppet 4.
The puppetlabs-puppet_agent module aims to address those problems and makes use of many new language features in Puppet 4 while doing so. This talk will walk through how it works.
Speaker Bio
Michael Smith has been writing software in C++ for 10 years, with an obsession for avoiding preventable mistakes. He’s currently a Sr. Software Engineer on the Open Source Client team at Puppet Labs. https://github.com/MikaelSmith
Agenda:
* 6:00-6:30 Pizza & salad, including vegan & gluten free options
* 6:30-7:15 Upgrading Puppet Agents with Less Magic - Michael Smith, Puppet Labs
* 7:15-7:45 Discussion about challenges that you've experienced upgrading
* 7:45-8:15 Mingle & plan for the next meeting
Extra Details: The office is wheelchair accessible, and has an elevator. There is bike parking on the street and just inside the parking garage at the corner of SW Stark and SW 1st Ave. Parking is available on the street or at one of the many pay to park lots near the office
