Yuri's Night Party with PSAS
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
The Portland State Aerospace Society (PSAS), a student aerospace group at Portland State University with decades of experience in high-powered amateur rocketry, is hosting a Yuri’s Night Party, in honor of the international space holiday.
Fifty-five years ago, Yuri Gagarin was the first person to travel into space when his spacecraft completed one full orbit about the Earth on April 12, 1961. In honor of his great accomplishment, parties are held worldwide every year to celebrate humanity’s progress in space.
As part of this international celebration, PSAS is hosting a “space race” with challenges and games, technology displays from local rocketry and space groups, engineering labs open to visitors, and food and beverages provided. We will also be screening the film First Orbit, a reconstruction of what Yuri would have seen on his journey.
The event will be held on April 12 from 6:30-9:30 in the Engineering Building of PSU (1930 SW 4th Ave Portland, OR 97201, at the intersection of SW 4th and College). All ages are welcome; there is a recommended $10 donation per person at the door.
Please join us as we celebrate the past, present, and future of space travel! |

thingSoC - http://thingsoc.github.io/
*thingSoC* is an open source standard that defines a vendor independent socket system for the creation of new Internet Things; it addresses many of the limitations of current product offerings and standards, by adding capabilities such as automatic device discovery, device configuration, monitoring, instrumentation, and testing. |

Fishackathon
Roll back
| description |

For Earth Day this year Uncorked Studios has partnered with the US State Department and others to try and tackle a problem that is relevant to all of us: global overfishing.
This April 22nd-April 24th we will be hosting a conference of developers and designers who are committing their weekend to hacking together a solution that will help address the dangers of overfishing. 2015 submissions included an app that helps consumers locate restaurants and retailers that serve up sustainable fish in their area, a smart buoy for ocean monitoring and an end-to-end solution for easily measuring and tracking fish.
We are inviting Portland area-based developers, designers and product managers who are interested in using their talents to help with this truly global issue. We think the Fishackathon represents a great opportunity to form meaningful connections and build something great, all while helping to solve a very real problem.
If you you'd like to participate, please sign up here: http://www.fishackathon.co/portland/ . Food and beverage will be provided throughout the weekend and there is a worldwide Grand Prize to be one.

Nice goggles, but is there delight in there? — User Experience and virtual reality
Roll back
| description |

Media giants like YouTube, Facebook, and Sony are betting billions that the future of (video) content is immersive, 360 degree, and interactive. With a flood of devices soon hitting retail shelves, 2016 is poised to usher in a new era of virtual reality (VR) technologies and opportunities for expression, and communication—probably a few confounded users to boot.
Moderated by Voices of VR Podcast's Kent Bye, this panel will bring together 360 degree videographers, VR technologists and experience designers to examine the state of user experience in virtual reality, the skills needed to design 360 degree experiences, the challenges of this new medium, and the joys of working inside new realities.

Docker PDX Meetup #11
Roll back
| description |

Please make sure to RSVP on the meetup page! Thanks.
This month we have two great talks by Carl Caum from Puppet Labs and Mike Coleman from Docker!
Agenda:
6:30 - Welcome, networking, food and drinks thanks to Intel and Sumo Logic
7:00 - Carl Caum: Adopting Docker in today's IT
As IT teams plan to deploy Docker, they are often looking for the shortest path to get from where they are today to where they want to be with Docker. One challenge is getting the Docker runtime deployed on operating systems already approved by IT and part of existing deployment processes. Once the runtime is deployed, teams need to quickly start managing their container apps across the available cluster nodes. Finally, teams need a clear path to integrate Docker management technologies like Docker Universal Control Plane into existing change management and delivery processes.
This talk will cover:
Using configuration management tools to deploy the docker runtime, sync Docker images, and ensure containers are running where desired with the desired runtime configuration.
Using configuration management practices of identification, control, status accounting, and verification/audit to manage Docker infrastructure over time
Build Docker infrastructure change management processes leveraging infrastructure as code to enable continuous peer review, audit, and replication.
Carl Caum is a technical marketing manager at Puppet Labs with a background in systems administration, software development, and product management. He specializes in IT cultures with a focus on how tools can be leveraged to enforce cultural change in otherwise stagnant IT organizations to increase collaboration and job satisfaction. He tweets at @ccaum.
7:45 - Mike Coleman: Docker Announcement
Docker has an announcement and Mike is going to review the newest features of the Docker platform. This will be updated with more information after the public release.
Mike Coleman is a Senior Technical Marketing Engineer at Docker. He tweets at @mikegcoleman.
8:30 - Wrap up and networking
Special thanks to Puppet Labs for space and Intel and Sumo Logic for food and drinks! |

Last month we learned from Phyllis Thompson and David Whitlock about "Open Space", a facilitation technique for group learning and problem solving, and how they've used it in their workplaces. This month we're going to give you a chance to try out the power of an Open Space un-conference yourself. We will be taking the group through a lightning quick 70 minute open space format, where you will help set the agenda and drive the discussions alongside your fellow Agile
PDXers. Come see what value can emerge out of an unplanned and loosely structured conference format. As usual, pizza and pop are sponsored by the good folks at the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC). |

data security

PostgreSQL Core Team member Josh Berkus will take you on a tour of the
new features, including demos of many of them, and field questions about
PostgreSQL in general.

professional database geek for 18 years. Today, he works for Red Hat as

VoIP, Kazoo and Erlang

James Aimonetti of 2600hz.com will be joining us tonight to talk about how Erlang powers the Kazoo project and Voice-over-IP products all around the world.
Kazoo is a scalable, distributed, cloud-based telephony platform that allows you to build powerful telephony applications with a rich set of APIs.
Designed to handle anything from large carrier to small countries, the Kazoo infrastructure can do it all. There are no lock-ins and the software is open-source to give you complete freedom.
James will be giving us a high level view of the architecture behind Kazoo, both from a platform perspective and from an Erlang perspective. We'll survey some of the code that is of interest, such as the gen_listener behaviour (for AMQP message consumption), the PropEr tests in various modules, the wh_json module for working with Erlang-encoded JSON objects), and more. No telecom experience required! |
