Jackson will discuss the basics of GIS, and the current environment in which enterprise spatial analytics are performed. Considering the many pitfalls of this current system, he will discuss how FOSS tools – especially PostgreSQL/PostGIS – are vitally important for modern spatial analytics. In addition to the PostGIS extension, Jackson will talk about network routing using the PgRouting extension and the interface between R and PostgreSQL. This talk will act more as a showcase of GIS and “spatial SQL” within PostgreSQL than it will nitty-gritty database development.
Jackson Voelkel is a Health Data Analyst on Kaiser Permanente’s GIS Team as well as an Adjunct Professor of Geography at Portland State University. He focuses on developing infrastructure for and performing advanced spatial analytics across healthcare, environment, urban planning, utilities, and econometrics. He teaches courses on advanced spatial analytics in R as well as spatial database design with PostgreSQL/PostGIS. |

Tech Talk – Formal Hardware Verification: Asynchronous, Analog, Mixed-Signal, and Mixed-Timing Circuits

Abstract:
Formal verification has become a well-established part of standard hardware design flows leveraging SAT solvers and model checkers for verification tasks including logical equivalence checking, property checking, and protocol verification. These tools are largely based on all-digital, synchronous, single clock-domain models of hardware behaviour. To address the needs of system-on-chip and multi-core designs, we are developing verification methods for asynchronous, analog, mixed-signal, and mixed-timing circuits.
A key enabling technology for our research is the integration of an SMT solver, Z3, into an interactive theorem prover, ACL2. Our integration, Smtlink, exploits ACL2’s extensive support for reflection: we can write lisp functions that operate on the syntax of pending goals by extracting facts (e.g. function definitions and previously proven theorems) from the ACL2 logical world. Smtlink can automatically translate high-level goals that include user-defined data types and recursive functions into formulas that are in the logic of the SMT solver. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach with the verification of timed asynchronous handshake circuits and a convergence proof for a digital phase-locked loop.
I will briefly describe related verification work including using automatic differentiation (AD) based algorithms to reason about synchronizers and analog circuits, and interval-arithmetic based verification algorithms to reason about convergence properties of non-linear circuits. Currently, I am working with students and other faculty at UBC to explore verification challenges arising in operating system research, cyber-physical systems, and numerical optimization algorithms used for machine learning.

Bio:
Mark Greenstreet is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. He earned his B.Sc. (1981) from Caltech, and his MA (1988) and Ph.D. (1992) from Princeton. His research interests span a wide range of formal verification topics, especially any problem, hardware or software, that involves concurrency and/or continuous models. Mark has industrial chip design experience spanning from a design of an FFT chip set for ESL (at TRW subsidiary) in the early 1980’s to work on verifying the synchronizers and clock-domain-crossing circuits in many generations of SPARC CPUs. |

Workshop Abstract
Want to take your stakeholder workshop facilitation skills to the next level? Learn the basics of service ecosystem mapping and how it applies to identifying and solving system-level problems.
While the increased popularity of service blueprints and customer journey maps is an encouraging sign for the proliferation of service design into the mainstream experience design toolbox, the fact remains that by themselves, they aren’t always ideal methods when dealing with senior business stakeholders in the context of overall business discovery and strategy. The theory behind systems thinking and an approach to visualize the service ecosystem at a high level should be part of the toolkit of every design strategist.
Learning the basics of facilitating ecosystem mapping exercises goes a long way towards being able to identify the role and influence a company has in its ecosystem, and pinpoint which key parts of that ecosystem should be given strategic priority (and consequently be journey mapped/blueprinted in detail if those journeys are deemed critical). Understanding an organization’s ecosystem is not (just) about visualizing and diagramming it. Being able to identify and apply the right lenses to craft a visual representation that tells a compelling story can become a key sense-making tool in your strategic arsenal.
What topics will be covered?
Core concepts of systems thinking and how it differs from our traditional ways of representing and understanding complexity.
Framing, boundary setting, and its importance in identifying the scope of an ecosystem.
The most common types of ecosystems and a methodology for ecosystems mapping.
What exercises will be done?
Throughout the workshop, a combination of presentation, discussion, and individual and group hands on work will be used to tackle an ecosystem of your choice. Participants will work in groups (4-6 per table) towards conceptualizing a service ecosystem map.
Any requirements for attending?
The material is best suited for intermediate to senior researchers & designers, product managers, and business leadership looking to add new techniques derived from systems thinking to their method toolbox. The workshop assumes some prior exposure to visual design thinking and a basic understanding of classic service design methods, though neither of those is a prerequisite.

Instructor Bio
Cornelius Rachieru is the Founder and Managing Partner of Canadian UX consultancy Ampli2de Inc., where he explores his fascination with the politics of design while leading enterprise-scale experience and service design projects. Over the past 15 years, he has managed a number of large UX teams as UX practice leader at Deloitte Canada and Shaw Communications, He has consulted in a wide range of industries, from technology to financial services, healthcare, enterprise risk management, autonomous transportation and law.
Cornelius is also the Founder, Co-chair and Creative Director of the popular CanUX conference, Canada’s largest and longest running annual UX event. A self proclaimed night owl (he is originally from Transylvania), he loves red eye flights and is a nomad at heart.

<p>Serverless is the new most talked about architecture pattern and quickly becoming a buzz word. The idea is for developers to stop worrying about server management and focus on code. The serverless platform takes care of the provisioning servers, underlying infrastructure, server maintenance security and scaling. We will look at three practical use cases of serverless with example code.</p> <p>* Secure and Scalable APIs<br>* Backend microservices<br>* Event driven programming</p> <p>Key concepts introduced will include triggers, rules, actions, composition and event driven architecture. Finally, serverless is relatively new and we will look at what the shortcomings are with the current technology and how to mitigate them. We will use Apache OpenWhisk as our serverless platform. Apache OpenWhisk is an open source, distributed Serverless platform that executes functions (fx) in response to events at any scale. The talk will include live demo of building and deploying an application to Apache OpenWhisk.</p> <p>Speaker: Upkar Lidder is a Full Stack Developer and Data Wrangler with a decade of development experience in a variety of roles.
