***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-november-happy-hour-networking-event-tickets-75015626759] is required to gain entry to this event ***
PDXWIT is thrilled to be partnering with Simple for a special edition happy hour on November 19th as part of the Give!Guide #givingtuesday drive! The theme of the evening is Supporting our Community. Let’s connect and talk about how we can really show up and support one another. New Relic is also going to be matching the first $3k to PDXWIT as part of #givingtuesday!
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short speaking segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase some individuals in our community.
We are excited that CymaSpace, a non-profit performance venue and technology incubator here in Portland, will be providing their stand-alone system dedicated to providing a more accessible and inclusive event to Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities utilizing Cymatic technology (translating sound waves into visual and tactile phenomena).
An employee from Simple will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities, and a representative from New Relic will also be on-hand to let everyone know about opportunities in their organization.
Guest speaker Hazel Valdez will share her story of the impact PDXWIT has had on her professional and personal life.
Megan Bigelow will talk about how critical it is for community members to do what they can to support organizations that matter to them.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An activity table where you can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
A #givingtuesday table with raffle prizes and other goodies for folks who decide to support PDXWIT at the event.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, announcements + speakers
6:15 p.m. - Raffle drawings
6:30 p.m. - Event ends

Do you enjoy sharing beautiful stories with family and friends on social media?
With the insta360 go, you can take it anywhere and easily record your favorite moments. With the FlashCut feature, the AI will automatically curate your content and create an action-packed story you can share without spending the time to edit hours of footage. For example, it will create clips when it detects a smile or every time you grab your favorite latte.
In this Meetup, I'll provide some examples of travel vlogs, Broll footage, and share ideas on what you can do with AI capabilities. This is a great camera to supplement your full-frame or phone camera.
Be inspired!

Query Optimization Statistics – The Driving Force Behind Query Performance
When the SQL Server optimizer evaluates a query to determine how best to execute it, the statistics are quite possibly the most important information at its disposal. But SQL Server statistics objects aren’t perfect because they only contain estimated summary information. In this session, we’ll start with an overview of what the statistics objects are, how the optimizer uses them, and some general guidelines for their maintenance. Then we’ll look at some of the issues, how to find them, and how to solve them, that can arise due to their imperfection: ascending keys (the most prevalent statistics based performance killer?), skewed distribution, or downright bad summary information. There’ll be many examples, and even a stored procedure to help you find ascending keys. By applying the techniques we’ll discuss, you WILL see improved query performance.
Vern is an independent SQL Server consultant and contract trainer in Portland, OR, and leader of the OregonSQL user group. He has attained MCSE, MCITP (both Administration and Development), and MCT certifications, among others. Vern has been passionate about databases since 1992 and has worked with SQL Server since version 4.21a. He provides broad technical SQL Server knowledge gained from the mixture of academic and practical experiences acquired from his classroom instructing and varied consulting contracts.

Data science seeks to uncover actionable data relationships to solve pressing organizational needs e.g. improved cyber security behavior, and this talk presents three steps for doing just that. The goal is a clear picture on how to leverage those actionable data relationships, e.g. how effective was a cyber security training program? The aim of this presentation is to provide an exemplary theory driven approach to building evidence of being better prepared against a cybersecurity threat.
Dr. Michael Curry is a Cyber security behavioral researcher utilizing data science methodologies to develop actionable data relationships to solve pressing organizational needs e.g. improved cyber security behavior. He is part of the OregonSQL Leadership and also an instructor for Oregon State University.

Join us for a monthly hands-on Mob Programming workshop!
The goals of this workshop are to practice mob programming, turn up the good, learn by doing, and promote rapid knowledge sharing. Come practice with us!
This workshop starts with a short discussion, then we will dive right in to mobbing on a simple programming problem! We provide plenty of opportunities to ask questions and reflect on what we're learning.
All skill levels and software disciplines are welcome!!! The mob programming workshop is a risk free, safe space for you to learn and experiment!
Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more. In practice it feels more like a bulldozer than a race-car —unstoppable and thorough.
The core of mob programming is pointing many pairs of eyes on a single problem, pushing all the code through a single keyboard. Each month we'll explore different methods for learning to mob well and reaping the rewards of this practice as soon as possible on your own team.
###Facilitator Bio:
Jeff Patterson is a software quality engineer and scrum master on the platform team at Jama Software, language agnostic, quality evangelist, and non-traditional CS grad. He has facilitated Global Day of Code Retreat, founded a peer group to support Community College CS students transferring to University, and is often heard saying, "Software is made of people!"
Events are made possible by the AgilePDX community and our sponsors, including platinum sponsor ProFocus Technology (https://www.profocustechnology.com/). Learn more about our sponsors at agilepdx.org.

AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Downtown Pub Lunch: Why don't we just call agile Feminist
Roll back

_Please RSVP here: https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/265127438/_
Hanna Tomas recently published an article in Medium about Agile.
https://medium.com/@Hanna.Thomas/why-dont-we-just-call-agile-what-it-is-feminist-8bdd9193edba
The hypothesis is that Agile is not just a software engineering methodology or framework but it is a set of social values that apply more broadly to people.
The author asserts the following:
"Successful organisations aren’t ones that adopt an ‘Agile mindset’. Successful organisations are ones that adopt a feminist, queer, anti-establishment, progressive mindset — one that is flexible, experimental, pushes boundaries, self-organises, and acts in service of community."
Lets all get together at McMenamins Ringlers Pub downtown and discuss this thought. Bring yourself and your friends to our community of purpose and talk with us about this idea. This event is inclusive and open to all.
You can find us in the back under the Crystal Ballroom, ask for the Agile PDX group and you will find us over yummy food and drinks.
Events are made possible by the AgilePDX community and our sponsors, including platinum sponsor ProFocus Technology (https://www.profocustechnology.com/). Learn more about our sponsors at agilepdx.org.
###Additional Information:
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes, McMenamins Ringlers Pub is ADA accessible. Please note, doors are manual but the staff is available to assist should you require assistance.
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: McMenamins Ringlers Pub restrooms are designated Men and Women. There are no unisex/family/gender neutral restrooms at this location.
Q: Will there be food and drinks at this event?
A: Food & Drink (including alcohol) is available to purchase, and we have table service. Standard pub fare & pub prices.
Q: What is the easiest way to get to the venue?
A: Parking downtown is limited, so we recommend public transportation or a ride-share option, or another personal transportation (bicycle, etc). For public transportation options, please visit trimet website to plan your trip to Ringlers at 1332 W Burnside Street in Downtown Portland.
Q: How do I enter the building?
A: We are in the side room under the Crystal Ballroom. You can use the entrance on the corner of Burnside & 14th. Let yourself in, and find us at the large table. |

At-Rest Encryption for Complete Data Protection

Join us for pizza and learning with the fabulous PHP Community! Doors open at 6, presentation 6:30-7:30 and join us for drinks or chatting after.
This month Vacasa's own Eric Mann shares At-Rest Encryption for Complete Data Protection
Many developers using hosted database solutions like Amazon RDS or Microsoft Azure are familiar with the “encrypt at rest” checkbox provided by their host. This will provide a modicum of security, but only defends your data against a narrow set of potential threats. Instead, we’ll discuss both the threats this feature does and does not protect against and some practical approaches to handling the uncovered edge cases. Attendees will learn how their application can both encrypt and decrypt data before communicating with an external data store for complete data protection. |

Bayesian Deep Learning
Roll back

As you know this is more of group discussion meetup where we get together to discuss what we are learning, interested in, stumped by, curious about, etc...
This month I propose we talk about Bayesian Deep Learning and study the materials from Yarin Gal's presentation at MLSS Moscow 2019 http://bdl101.ml
There wont be a presentation. Instead I encourage you to read over the materials, try out some experiments and come share your findings and experiences. I have lots of questions about when/where it is useful and what kind of future it may have. I'm looking forward to hearing your questions and thoughts.
All levels of experience and backgrounds are welcome so don't be shy. We all learn from each other.
Also, if you have ideas for topics you'd like to see in future meetings please let me know. Thanks. |

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Contending With Our Culture of Discouragement
Roll back

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting
Who: You!<br>
What: Contending With Our Culture of Discouragement<br>
Where: PSU, 1900 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>
When: Thursday, October 3rd, 2019 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
The Free Software/Open Source community appears to be at a crossroads.
A brave woman declared that "enough is enough" with the disturbing statements of a pivotal figure in the community and it rightfully cost that figure a number of prominent positions. Remarkably, she wasn't the first woman to challenge a foundation leader this year and help usher them to the door.
Responses to such confrontations have ranged from false narratives to the proposal of morality-enforcing licenses for software.
One theme however, is the chilling effect that disturbing, and at times unlawful behavior in the community causes, and the efforts to content with it. Why participate in communities with *these* issues? This passive discouragement is often combined with direct discouragement and countless forms of divisiveness.
Yet we press on, and work to resolve these bugs, one by one.
This meeting will be an open forum to share your experiences with discouragement in the free software/open source community. Trolls need not attend but will be educated by a panel of experts if they do.
ATTENTION! Thanks to a new security policy, attendees will need to enter through the 1900 SW 4th entrance, just North of the 1930 SW 4th entrance adjacent to Hawaiian Express, formerly Taco Del Mar:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/1900+SW+4th+Ave,+Portland,+OR
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.
Ride shares to the Lucky Lab available
PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings. |

Take the stairs or elevator to the lower level and head East, though you will quickly lose orientation. Look for room 86-01 and note that the parking garage also provides access from a level below for $6, up from $1.50 or so. :( |

AI/ML Unconference
Roll back

We're hosting an unconference focused on finding ways to use AI and machine learning to improve the lives of everyone in the community on October 19, 2018 in Portland, Oregon.
Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are predicted to affect aspects of every business, government agency and organization. In order to understand, better use and control these technologies and changes. We ran a similar event a year and a half ago and everyone got a lot out of it. Many things have changed since then and many issues are the same. Let's figure out where we stand.
This will be a great way to meet others in the community and discuss related topics of interest and concern.
Get your ticket today. There is a small fee that will go towards lunch and supplies. Any extra funds will be donated to a local non-profit. |
