create Calagator::Event 1250475885 Portland C++ User's Group (PDXCPP) Roll back

description nil Do you use C++? Would you like to learn C++? Writing an operating system, an autonomous multi-agent system, video game, or hacking on a Raspberry Pi? Stuck on a problem and need another point of view? Perhaps you know C++ and would like to interact with others who also have experience with the language? Meet up with other C++ programmers to learn, share, and develop tips and tricks of the trade, find out what local C++ projects are happening, and especially to better understand modern C++! All experience levels are welcome: You aren't alone on your C++ journey! Our group is different than some others in that we focus on "modern" C++. We discussion many aspects of the current-- or even future-- C++ standards.

create Calagator::Event 1250475883 DAMA PDX: Data Management From A Penetration Tester’s Perspective Roll back

description nil Presented by John Stephens, CISSP Managing Partner, Luminant Digital Security Data Management from a Penetration Tester’s Perspective – Zero Trust and Compliance It’s pretty much a daily occurrence where we hear some vulnerability or hack or about this or that breach, resulting in information disclosure on what seems increasingly to be hundreds of thousands or millions of records. And if that wasn’t enough, it’s become a regular occurrence where we hear about how some city opted to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in ransom. Now, we could spend all day talking about all the things that went wrong to get to this point. That could include security patching, application development, system configuration, etc. One item that’s often overlooked is Data Management and its impact on security. In nearly every hack or breach, the ultimate goal of the attacker is to get to the data so it can be monetized. So how you manage the data is critical. This presentation is designed to give you insight into how attacks are executed, the tools and tricks the attackers use, and how data management can play a role in minimizing the damage when a breach occurs, or perhaps stopping it altogether. This effort can be significantly enhanced by adopting a zero trust approach with data access and backups. It can be significantly hindered by checklist “compliance” efforts that are not grounded in secure best practices. We’ll talk about these items based on observations and experience during actual Penetration Tests, so you can hear firsthand how data management can play a role in securing your data. When July 18th, 2019 (Chapter meetings held on third Thursday of the month) Schedule 8:30 – 9:00 am – Sign In 9:00 – 10:15 am – Presentation 10:15 – 10:30 am – Break, Chapter Announcements 10:30 – 11:30 am – Presentation continued

description nil Christian Höppler, bass, and Karl Fogel, piano, will perform Franz Schubert's famous song cycle Die Winterreise. The concert is free but donations are requested, all proceeds from which will benefit the Software Freedom Conservancy. These guys, both amateurs who work in Free software, have been rehearsing at my house and they are AWESOME. Goosebumps. The lyrics are in German but there will be translations. The 8:30 ending time is real - you will be able to attend the other parties, make it to dinner on time, etc.

create Calagator::Event 1250475875 Portland OWASP: Using Graph Theory to Understand Security with Tim Morgan Roll back

description nil Using Graph Theory to Understand Security Information security is hard. It must be, because we keep getting hacked. One aspect that makes it so difficult is the level of complexity that exists in even a modestly-sized digital infrastructure. Humans can consider only so many security relationships, trust boundaries, and attack scenarios at once. This complexity makes it hard to decide where to focus our defensive resources and we're regularly led astray by the latest shiny tool or security advisory. Remarkably, our adversaries actually have a similar challenge: once a digital intruder gains a foothold in an environment that is completely new to them, how do they know what next steps they should take to efficiently achieve their goal? The environments they attack are not only complex, they are also unexplored landscapes that must be mapped out. This is where graph theory can lend a hand. Several open source tools, such as BloodHound and Infection Monkey, provide intruders (whether that be your friendly neighborhood pentester or your adversaries) with easy ways to map out infrastructures and identify the quickest path to your crown jewels. While this is certainly alarming, we can also use these tools ourselves to find out what our infrastructures look like in the eyes of an attacker. In this talk, Tim will provide a brief introduction to graph theory, show some demos of the free tools that use it, and discuss how he is using these techniques to build automated threat models "at scale" to make defenders' lives easier. Speaker: Timothy Morgan After earning his computer science degrees (B.S., Harvey Mudd College and M.S., Northeastern University) and spending a short time as a software developer, Tim began his career in application security and vulnerability research. In his work as a consultant over the past 14 years, Tim has led projects as varied as application pentests, incident response, digital forensics, secure software development training, phishing exercises, and breach simulations. Tim has also presented his independent research on Windows registry forensics, XML external entities attacks, web application timing attacks, and practical application cryptanalysis at conferences such as DFRWS, OWASP's AppSec USA, BSidesPDX, and BlackHat USA. For the past three years Tim has been building an innovative new risk-based vulnerability management product (DeepSurface) that helps his customers gain a much deeper understanding of the complex relationships present in their digital infrastructures. Visit kanchil.com to learn more about Tim's latest R&D effort.

description nil
Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?

PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!

We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.

This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.

p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you!
