WHAT IS INFORMATION? (2020)
Roll back
| description |
What is Information? marks the 10th annual What is…?, bringing together natural and social scientists, scholars, government officials, industry professionals, artists and designers, as well as alumni, students, community organizations, and the public. We invite proposals for scholarly papers, panels, and installations on a wide variety of issues and topics.
The Call for Proposals and additional details will be available in September 2019. |
→ |
What is Information? (2020) will investigate conceptualizations and implementations of information via material, representational, and hybrid frames. The conference-experience will consider information and its transformational æffects—from documents to data; from facts and fictions to pattern recognition; from physical information to differential equations; and from volatility, uncertainty, and ambiguity to collective intelligence and wisdom.
The tenth annual What is…? examines tapestries, temperaments, and topologies of information lenses and practices—including—social and technical, mathematical and semantic, physical and biological, economic and political, cultural and environmental information. Scholars, government and community officials, industry professionals, alumni, students, as well as scientists, artists, filmmakers, grassroots community organizations, and the public are invited to collaborate. We welcome submissions for papers, panels, roundtables and installations.

HiHo! HiHo! SQL Server on Linux, we go!
Are you being forced to the ‘Cloud’ to reduce costs? SQL Server 2017 now runs on Windows, Linux, and Docker containers.
Now SQL Server can be installed on Linux in order to provide a consistent database platform across Window and Linux servers, as well as on-premises and in the cloud. This presentation will discuss the advantages of using SQL Server on Linux, comparing architecture, cost and performance. Several demonstrations on installing and maintaining SQL Server on different Linux distributions and Docker will be shown, as well as best practice considerations for production/development environments. Also, several useful Linux commands for monitoring, managing and backing up SQL Server will be demonstrated. Finally, client connectivity and tools will be discussed – plus the new Azure Data Studio UI with the ability to add monitoring widgets will be demonstrated. |

CNPDX October(2): SLOs and Kubernetes, OpenShift
Roll back
| description |

For a second meetup in October, we will have two guest speakers from Red Hat: Elana Hashman and Ryan Jarvinen
#1: Elana Hashman will present "Operating within Normal Parameters: Monitoring Kubernetes"
After Kubernetes takes over your data centers, how can you be sure that it's operating within normal parameters? What does "normal" even mean? By formalizing your expected quality of service, you can measure and compare against known targets with open source tools like Prometheus. In this talk, we'll use Kubernetes as a case study for introducing service level objectives (SLOs) to guide monitoring efforts. Come learn the how and why of metric selection for monitoring Kubernetes quality of service, what gaps exist in the open source Kubernetes monitoring ecosystem, how to use Prometheus and its exporters to establish predictability and "normal" baselines, and how to use this telemetry to debug service degradations in a Kubernetes cluster.
#2: Ryan Jarvinen will present "What is Openshift?"
Ryan will explain what the Openshift distribution adds to Kubernetes. He'll go over what went into designing Openshift 4.X, and then he'll demo some of the features recently added to 4.2.
Generously hosted by Cambia Health. Sponsored by Red Hat. |

This month:
- Format discussion: feedback about last time, what people want going forward, request to think about topics
- Probably 2 talks, 30 min-ish. Feedback from last time was to allow people to go over a few min if necessary and have questions not count as part of the time. That's cool with me. (should the talks go at the end?)
- I'll post here when talks are confirmed.
- Lightning talks or announcements.
- Show & Tell. "I did a cool thing. Look everyone." I think it'd be great to have a place to show off something you did or something you learned.
-
Why the 5th:
- Shift to "first Tuesday", so we don't collide with PyData PDX, on "second Tuesday".
Food:
Rohde & Schwarz sponsoring the venue and the food. Probably pizza. It was really great last time.
Want to present?
- Contact us through our standard pythonbytes.fm email, found here: https://pythonbytes.fm/home/contact

AgilePDX Westside: How to coach for Servant-Leadership

Coaching is one of the most powerful tools used in agile. And yet... being a _great_ coach is much harder than it seems. This month at the west-side cafe, we are going to discuss coaching in relationship to servant leadership. We will ask ourselves: As a team member, SM, etc how do we coach those who need coaching and may not realize (or admit it)?
Events are made possible by the AgilePDX community and our sponsors, including platinum sponsor ProFocus Technology (https://www.profocustechnology.com/). Learn more about our sponsors at https://agilepdx.org/sponsorship. |

Junior Tech Talent + Startup Hiring Event
Roll back
| description |

This is a FREE event.
This is not your typical job fair. No booths, no resumes, just personal connections with like-minded people.
Each company has one-minute to pitch to job seekers (who you are and what you're hiring for)
Each candidate has one-minute to pitch to companies (who you are, what you're excited to bring to the table, what you're hoping to get out of your next role, why companies should hire you)
We will have a lineup of vetted talent consisting of junior developers and college students with technical and non-technical backgrounds. Candidates are seeking internships/apprenticeships, project-based work and entry-level positions. Companies consist of startups and emerging and high-growth tech companies.
The format for this event was designed with a few things in mind: minimized risk, cost, and time for the founder; pre-vetted, talented folks who were prepared and ready to pitch to companies; a safe, fun environment for job seekers to learn about the startup community and learn what it takes to be a sought after employee.

Thursdays are open house night here at CTRL-H. Jon and Melinda are available during this time to give guided tours, answer questions and show you all that the hackerspace has to offer.
We don't have an opening ceremony or any formal meeting. This is a time for you to eavesdrop on other peoples projects and get support on a project that you may need help with. Bring your laptop, projects, inventions, your technical toys and your broken microwave to CTRL-H and hack with friends. |

Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?
PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!
We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.
This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.
p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you!

Dmitri is a Masters student in the Climate Science Lab at Portland State University, a NASA-funded researcher, and a recent convert to the Python language and ecosystem. In this talk you'll learn about alternative tooling available in Python for analysis of climate data, becoming a Python programmer, and most importantly - having fun doing it!

Join us for another night of meeting new friends and chill design conversations over food and drinks. Your hosts are Rachel Glaves and Leo LaCroix, both local UX designers. Welcome! We hope you swing by and say hi.
Venue note: For fall we're still meeting at the food cart pod at 11th and SE Madison. We'll be in the west area of the pod with the covered picnic tables, behind most of the food trucks. The pod has a beer cart and many food options - come enjoy dinner with us!
It may be a bit rainy, but it shouldn't be too cold plus there are covered areas to sit with heaters! See you there. |
