PDX PHP - Using Generators to Beat Memory Bloat

<p>There will be food, give-a-ways (elePHPants) and a great time getting to know your fabulous PHP Community!</p> <p>6:30 - We'll start off with Pizza and networking at 6:30</p> <p>6:45 - 7:45 - Move into the presentation on Generators, by Korvin Szanto</p> <p>Memory usage is something that we as developers have to be aware of. Ever debugging a memory issue and find that your once small dataset has ballooned out of proportion? And instead of dealing with the issue, you opt for upping the memory limit? Iterators can be the answer but they require a lot of code and can be very difficult to understand at a glance. Thankfully since PHP 5.5 Generators help us create and manage what would be complex iterators with simple syntax sugar. In this talk I will go over some of the ways you can implement generators and cure your memory bloat.</p> <p><br>7:45 - Prizes</p> <p>7:45 - 8:30 - Hack and Help. Have a chance to try out Generators for yourself, or bring your own project and get some help from the community.</p> |

#Thursday, March 16th, 12PM - 1:30PM#
##CENTRL Pearl, 1355 NW Everett, Portland, OR##
##FREE##
This is the budgeting class you've been waiting for! With zest & humor, Lillian will help you figure out your personal budget and get past the overwhelm - this class is PARTICULARLY for start-up owners and tech/creative freelancers.
Many small business owners are great at managing their company's expenses, but end up ignoring their own personal money situation until it catches on fire. And even if you feel reasonably on top of your money, you'd likely benefit from a budget check-in. Lillian from [Oh My Dollar!](http://www.ohmydollar.com "Oh My Dollar!") will walk you through a 90 minute crash course on crafting a quick-start budget for personal expenses based on your values. (And she won't sell you any products or overwhelm you with jargon!)
The class is totally free and open to the public, however, RSVP is required to get a free budgeting zine to take home.
### "I learned that money stuff isn't as mysterious and terrifying as I thought it was!"
-2016 Money Bootcamp Graduate
###"I would whole-heartedly recommend this class to anyone who ignores their bills in the mail. Take the class. Face your finances and make a plan!"
-2016 Money Bootcamp Graduate
###"Taking Lillian's money class inspired me to make a plan to aggressively pay off my student loans! Made a plan to have them gone in 18 months! :sparkles: I'm tripling my payments & it feels sooooo good!"
-2016 Money Bootcamp Graduate
###"I really appreciated Lillian's blunt, humorous honesty and ability to tell us what we really need to know instead of boring us with a finance talk."

Open Source Bridge is an open source developer and maker conference, focused on bringing people from a range of technology backgrounds together to share our knowledge and explore what it means to be an open source citizen.
For our 9th year, we’re changing things up a little, given the political, cultural, and economic crossroads we find ourselves at right now. We’ve added a new track to explore how activists are using technology, how open source communities are supporting activists, and how other open source and activist communities intersect. To encourage new connections, we’re also holding a project night in the Hacker Lounge to partner with community groups and individual projects looking for new contributors and adding a Community Organizer track to our Friday Unconference day.

** Please RSVP on Eventbrite **
Many of us live and/or work this side of the West Hills, but may not have a professional community convenient to this side of the metro area. Thanks to PDXWIT’s support, our plight for a post-workday meeting has been addressed. Let’s get together to talk about our projects, training efforts, research, and anything else the group is interested in discussing.
Join us for User Experience themed happy hour with fellow women in tech. There will be light food + drinks and networking! Everyone is welcome, including folks like educators, instructors, librarians, and anyone else in the technology space.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. Mike Monteiro: How To Fight Fascism
Roll back
| description |

IxDA Portland is proud to host Mike Monteiro, in town to fundraise & rouse the weary with his latest call to arms: How To Fight Fascism. Doors open at 6pm for drinks, snacks, catching-up with friends, and checking-out Wacom's swanky new "Experience Center" in the Pearl District. Mike's talk will begin at 7pm and span ~45min, with time after for inspired rabble-rousing.
———
All design is political, because all politics are designed. The world is a mess because a certain set of people designed it to be a mess. Now we need a different set of people to design our way out of it. This is not a choice. Regardless of whether this is what we wanted or not fascism is knocking on our front door. This is how we knock back.
This event is doubling as a fundraiser for The Trevor Project, Planned Parenthood, and ACLU of Oregon, with IxDA getting the refreshments, so... LET'S DO THIS PORTLAND!!!
Mike Monteiro is the co-founder and design director of Mule Design in San Francisco. He prefers elegant, simple sites with clear language that serve a real need. He prefers that designers have strong spines. Mike writes and speaks frequently about the craft and business of design.
He loves client services so much he wrote two books on the topic, Design is a Job and You’re My Favorite Client, both from A Book Apart. Mike received the 2014 Net Award for Conference Talk of the Year for his inspirational polemic on responsibility, How Designers Destroyed the World. |

PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) "She started it" Movie Screening
Roll back
| description |

** Please RSVP on Eventbrite **
You’re invited to join a special screening of a ground-breaking film that tells the story of five young women who dare to compete in the ruthless, male-dominated world of high tech start-ups.
Trailer: http://www.shestarteditfilm.com/about-the-film/trailer/
Even if becoming a founder isn’t your dream, this film is a must-see. The women who produced and directed the film explore female under-representation and gender inequity in tech, as well as issues many women face such as risk aversion and self-doubt. The filmmakers’ goal, as stated on indigogo, “is to inspire young women to become entrepreneurs and consider careers in tech, and also educate about how to sustain that career.”
By following the story of these five founders, you’ll be amazed to see what ingenuity, hard work, temerity, and focus can accomplish. We intend to create an even more impactful experience by inviting the members of PDXWIT to watch this film together. This event is another opportunity to realize that our strength and talent is changing the future of technology.
Read more about “She Started It,” at Indiewire.

** Please RSVP on Eventbrite **
Join us on Thursday, April 13th at 5:00 for an informal fireside chat with Congressman Earl Blumenauer at New Relic. Earl Blumenauer is the U.S. Representative for Oregon's 3rd congressional district, serving since 1996. His district includes most of East Portland and cities to the east of Portland.
We will use this as an opportunity to learn how our top issues — Civil Rights, Women's Health, Gender Equity, and Health Care — are playing out on the national stage. The Congressman has an hour to answer any questions we have, and we will be drawing raffle tickets so that as many people as possible have a chance to ask questions.
The Congressman will be available for from 5:30 to 6:30, so please show up on time and come prepared with questions. We are limiting this event to 200 people so we can all fit in the space, so please RSVP ahead of time if you’d like to attend. Light snacks and drinks will be served.

Beer of Trust Key-Signing
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
"Beer of Trust" is a key signing party with beer, and a chance to hang out and talk about PGP, encryption, and other related things!
## What's a key-signing party?
A key-signing party is a get-together with PGP users for the purpose of meeting other PGP users and signing each other's keys. This helps to extend the "web of trust" to a great degree. Also, it sometimes serves as a forum to discuss strong cryptography and related issues.
## What if I don't have a key yet?
If you don't have a PGP key yet, this is a good chance to get your feet wet. If you bring a computer, you can generate a test key at the event and experiment with sending messages to others there. It can be helpful to have someone present to walk you through the process the first time. It is recommended that you only generate a test key at the event, and later generate your real key in private. See below for links to some helpful resources for securely generating a key.
## What do I need for this party?
If you are bringing a key to sign, then make sure you bring:
* A picture ID or some other way for people to match you to your identity
* Your key ID, key type, hex fingerprint, and key size. You can print out slips of paper to hand out your key info if you'd like.
* A pen/pencil or whatever you'd like to write with
* A computer is not required, and it is not recommended to use your computer to sign keys at the event
At the event, you'll meet others, confirm their key ID in person, and swap key IDs with them. Later when you get home, you can download the full keys and sign them, then upload the signature to the keyserver or email it to them directly.
[RSVP here](http://pin13.net/BoT/2017-04-03/).

I want to work for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ with Sam McCurdy (JetReports)
Roll back
| description |
This month, we will host Sam McCurdy, VP of engineering at JetReports. We might actually try something slightly different and have a panel of members from JetReports leadership to answer your questions this time!
So definitely join us and bring along your "tech-curious" friends with you.
If you are ready to learn what's out there (I know there's a lot of choice out there) in the tech world and want to explore options peripherally, this is the meetup for you... and has been for the last 2+ years.
jetReports has a number of unique things going for them and I can wait to dig into some of those aspects on March 8th.
For more details checkout the meetup page @ https://www.meetup.com/I-want-to-work-for-______________/ |

AgilePDX Westside Café Lunch: Finding the optimal footprint between Product Owners and their team(s)
Roll back
| description |

→ |
We’re betting a few westsiders will be as excited as we are about this announcement… Westside Café lunches are brownbag sessions facilitated by AgilePDX at the Nike Evergreen campus cafeteria (20540 NW Evergreen Pkwy, Hillsboro, OR 97124) on the fourth Friday each month from 12p to 1p.
Join us on 3/24 to discuss Finding the Optimal Footprint Between Product Owners and their Teams. Teams fall into many categories when it comes to time and attention with their Product Owners: 100% dedicated, 50/50 balance between team and clients, always fighting fires in the field, split between 2+ teams, and many combinations in between. What is the optimal footprint? Scrum Masters, Agile Coaches, Devs, QA, etc. bring your Product Owners along, so we get to hear from all sides on the ups and downs of the various levels. We will find some best practices on balancing client needs and expectations with feedback and direction to the teams. Some combinations might surprise you!
We strongly encourage you to arrive early, buy\bring a lunch, and settle in by noon. We start on time and end on time in a format very similar to our popular downtown pub lunches!

Hints and tips for attending AgilePDX Westside Cafe events at the Nike Evergreen Campus
Parking Hints:
· Address is 20540 NW Evergreen Pkwy, Hillsboro, OR 97124
· Parking is available around the café and additional parking is available behind the Bruin building just south of the café.
· No parking pass is needed; our meetings will be held in the rooms adjoining the café. Pro Combat is our primary meeting space with an overflow room next door if we exceed capacity.
· Here is a map with the café door marked for access so you don’t end up waiting for access to an unauthorized badged area ;):
· .
Food Options:
· Onsite, the Evergreen Café provides modest choices at affordable prices including vegan and gluten free options beyond the salad bar.
· The coffee/smoothie cart along the window opposite our meeting spaces offers beer and wine after 11:30.
· You may bring a brown-bag lunch to this space if you prefer but no microwave is available so plan accordingly.
· After lunch, the tray\dish return is along the hallway behind the cafe.
· Restrooms are next to the tray\dish return.
Community Agreements
· Food is cafeteria style and attendees desiring to eat will need to collect it, pay for it, and bring it to our event space which is right off the main seating area.
· We focus on Agile principles, practices, frameworks, methods, and techniques, not project specifics unless attendees or presenters volunteer those specifics in alignment with their organization’s policies. And, what happens at the cafe stays at the cafe.
· AgilePDX representatives will coordinate and facilitate sessions to support starting on time, ending on time, topic focus, and community building and engagement.
· This event is a no-host event similar to other AgilePDX events and is not a forum for commercial entities to or sell products or services. However, everyone is welcome as a member of this learning community.
· In appreciation of agile leaders at Nike welcoming community involvement and exposure to new ideas, we leave the space they have provided as we found it--or better. |

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
###Small Talks
Is there something that has peaked your interest, gotten your goat, or filled your inner-child with wonderment lately? Please share it with us as we do some informal (any length from 30 sec to 10 min) talks. Could be about code, but could be about anything really. So come and share!
###Lauren Voswinkel: Conway's Game of Life Code Retreat.
"We'll take 30-45 minutes to work on Conway's Game of Life. Pair programming is *highly* encouraged, but is not required. We'll take some time to talk about what we learned during the exercise, as well as what approaches worked and what didn't. The whole idea of this exercise is to have a space and time to actively practice coding."
**Please Bring Your Laptops**
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!**
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 27th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 27th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
ABOUT THE GROUP: *The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!*

<li>Working with other people and projects that matters</li>
<li>Positively influencing and learning from the people they work with</li>
<li>Energising people they work with to be and do better</li>
<li>Having a shared sense of narrative and purpose</li>
<li>Continuously learning from customers.</li>
</ul>
But sometimes people spend significant amounts of time at work on projects that do not provide meaning for themselves and others.
We all get caught up with the workings, speed and delivery of our projects that we forget about …
<ul>
<li>Our own wellbeing</li>
<li>To reflect on our project stories and observations</li>
<li>To share those observations with the people we work with on our own teams and on other teams</li>
<li>Collate the aggregated learnings from projects to determine what it means for better integrated practices over time.</li>
</ul>
This results in people feeling purposeless, stressed, unhealthy and in a state of “sleepwalking.”
So this presentation together will help us …
<ul>
<li>Take a step back and breather from our projects</li>
<li>Examine the frustrations at work</li>
<li>Look at what a successful project does and does not do</li>
<li>Examine the soft skills needed to nurture our own capabilities</li>
<li>Look at key project artifacts needed to help us prioritise and focus on what matters</li>
<li>Look at an integrated framework for make meaningful work</li>
</ul>
Finally, this presentation will leave participants with a manifesto for make meaningful work and an integrated framework to help us all move from being stuck (“Sleepwalking”) on projects to help us flow (“Sparkle”).

After a decade working in digital marketing and strategy, Helen Chang wanted a <strike>side project</strike> distraction. She set out a few criteria—it needed to take her away from the computer, be tangible, and make for a good conversation starter. All the things that digital marketing and strategy supposedly are not. Driven by nothing more than impulse and naivete, she created 1UP Caramels, which turned out to be a business, which turned out to be a success, which turned out to be not so different from selling a product, design or service in the digital world after all.
In this talk, Helen will share 8 lessons in digital marketing and strategy that she learned and reaffirmed while she took a break from digital marketing and strategy to sling caramels. Bring a friend and cozy up with your peers at this March edition of Refresh Portland.
<h3>Our Presenter, Helen Chang</h3>
Helen Chang works in digital media and has done the full-gamut: design and programming, planning and execution, production and lead. In her more recent role as a digital strategist, she helps companies build out their digital channels and establish best practices in digital communications, user research and engagement, campaign strategies, and performance measurement. She is also in the process of developing digital marketing courses for a university client.
In her spare time, Helen enjoys nothing more than good food and the company of good people. |
