Our instructor for the day will be Jason Lengstorf, a Developer Advocate with Gatsby. Collaboration, support, and the ability to clearly communicate about your project are critical factors for success. The brainchild of Nathan Keene and Abeer Eltanawy, this event is designed to:
- introduce new ideas within our community
- find solutions to project challenges
- encourage networking and collaboration
- improve presentation skills
- create access to mentors
- provide a safe space to learn and grow
- help you accelerate your project
Who is it for?
Members with a coding, hacking or maker project seeking a supportive audience who will provide potential solutions to challenges, constructive questions and feedback. Please apply!
Members with a pet project on the back burner (or the front one!) who would like to present, discuss and gain traction? Come on out and share it!
Folks interested in hearing about innovative projects and providing helpful audience feedback. Join us!
How does it work?
Here’s the scoop:
The event starts with 15 minutes of networking. We will also encourage you to reconvene informally at the end.
2 to 3 projects will be selected for presentation.
Each project presenter has a maximum of 20 minutes for their project (10 minutes to present, 10 minutes for brainstorming challenge solutions and receiving feedback). Presentations will be timed.
How do I apply to present?
If you want to present your idea or project, please fill out this form before September 13th, 2018 and choose the Access to Invite-Only option to be invited to present; first consideration will be given to the earliest entries.
We will notify selected presenters by email on September 17th, 2018.

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

Are you getting started with containers in Azure? Do you have a single container workload (for example: a website or webapi that uses a database)? Have you put all the pieces of the puzzle together yet to determine what products in Azure are needed for your solution? In this session I will cover a few scenarios for getting web sites (that are docker containers) in Azure - including:
- Azure Container Registry
- App Service on Linux
- Web App for Containers
- Azure Container Instances
The premise for this talk is running simple containers in Azure (not multi node systems that need Kubernetes or anything like that). I've got several demos to show you the different Azure products and some pros/cons for when you would use them.

SeaGL is a grassroots technical conference dedicated to spreading awareness and knowledge about the GNU/Linux community and free/libre/open-source software/hardware. Join us for a beer (or beverage of your choice) and a snack at the Rogue Eastside Pub to discuss Patrick Lencioni's book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team". If you work with teams and team success, this book may be an interesting addition to your library.
Lencioni tells the story of a troubled Silicon Valley firm and the new CEO faced with uniting and guiding a team of leaders with the aim of making the company a success. Through this business fable, Lencioni highlights the common dysfunctions that he claims can cripple any team: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. He offers ways to assess a team and provides actionable steps on how to overcome each of the 5 dysfunctions.
Food for thought:
- This book tells the tale of a CEO refashioning the dynamic of an executive committee. Do fables apply to everyone?
- Is Lencioni right? Does he name the most important dysfunctions that challenge the teams you work with?
- What can we learn from this representative tale about development teams? Where can we add our own wisdom to Lencioni's model?

The end of August means that Fall is around the corner. Are you switching careers this season? Are you looking to get into the tech industry for the first time? This month, pdxFLIT is taking a break from presentations to host a special workshop about professional development! We'll be partnering with our friends from Intel to provide a two-hour event featuring a variety of activities. There will be opportunities to turn strengths into interview stories, participate in resume reviews, practice elevator pitches, and practice answering tricky behavioral interview questions. If you're searching for a job, take a night off to work on these valuable skills!
Workshop events will begin at 6 PM. Our event facilitators will cover introductions and elevator pitches, resumés, authentic interviewing, the STAR method, and more! There will be a variety of activities to help you practice these skills so that you can put your best foot forward when you land an interview at your dream company. If you have any questions about various aspects of this event, please contact Masen or Katie via Meetup, Twitter, email, or Slack.

Join us October 3rd at The Armory for an evening dedicated to bringing experienced women in tech together to support one another and talk though challenges. Our focus will be on identifying and working to resolve issues we are currently facing at work. The evening’s agenda will involve identifying the top three issues at work that are bothering us, splitting into small groups to brainstorm solutions, and coming back together as a group to conclude our discussion.

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. A hackathon (aka hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, collaborate intensively on a software project. Hackathons provide a wonderful opportunity to learn, share, contribute and build your network. With the opportunity to win fabulous prizes and build lifelong friendships, what better way is there to spend your summer? The hackathon is open to all skill levels. Team roles may include, but are not limited to: Documentation, Developing your pitch, Marketing Plan, User Experience Design, User Interface Design, Front End Development, Backend Development, Team Lead, Mentorship.
The Cascadia PHP Conference will be hosting a Twilio Sponsored Hackathon for Good event this year. Join us and your fellow participants to use your skills and knowledge for the benefit of local charities. The hackathon has a registration fee of $5 that will be donated to one or more charities at the end of the event. ## Choosing the right router for each client
Routers, we've all got them. We install them. How do we choose the right one? How do we balance security and price for different clients? Routers have many features which are useful in some situations but worthless in others. How do we match our client needs to the right router?
Christian Martin will lead a discussion of the various features of the routers we install and how well they work. We will discuss which routers actually have particular features and how difficult it is to use them. We hope to utilize the experiences of everyone in attendance. Members who have knowledge of Asus, Meraki, Netgear, SonicWall, Ubiquiti, and Uplevel Systems routers will share their experiences to get things started.
We will cover:
+ Maintenance and updating How is it managed, frequency of updates, are updates automated
+ Remote Access What options are available; VPN Client (IPSec, L2TP, SSL), Site-to-site
+ Advanced features DPI, DPI SSL, Content Filtering, configurable ports, QoS, VLANs
+ Performance Real-world throughput you can expect with and without advanced features enabled
If you will help us by sharing your experience with some routers, please come prepared with the model number, so we correctly identify the router with the features we talk about.

Are you highly motivated and working towards the next level in your tech career? Are you progressing on your goals, but seek something more?
PDXWIT is partnering with Goal Champions to offer an 8 week program, for 16 senior-level tech professionals.
The kick-off workshop on September 8th guides participants to envision their goals, get specific, and create a roadmap. From there, two Pods of eight people will be formed, based on common goals. Goal Champions will facilitate 8 weekly Pod meetings (time / location TBD by the Pod).

When realizing cloud-native architecture, the integration of the microservices is becoming really challenging. In this talk we will discuss some of the cutting-edge technologies that are designed for integrating microservices, independently deploying the services along with CICD and make them resilient using a service mesh.
We will cover a stack of tools to address this problem, including Ballerina (a cloud-native programming language), Metaparticle, and the Istio Service Mesh, and demonstrate how all these work together. Along the way we will discuss the problems of integration in more depth, show you some of the Ballerina language, and share some integration patterns.
