February PLUG Advanced Topics
BSD (Berkley Software Distribution): Enterprise Open Source From Day One
W&W: Tuesday, February 15th, 7PM at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Ave
Synopsis:
You use BSD software every day.
Virtually every packet you send travels through BSD-based routers.
BSD gave us the Internet, which gave us Linux and the FLOSS revolution.
The iPhone contains BSD software. OpenSSH is a BSD project.
Michael Dexter of BSD Fund will give a tour of how BSD is being used and discuss why it happily lurks in the shadows of open source. BSD myths will be addressed along with an open discussion of what the audience is doing with BSD.

Arbor Lodge Community Network Work Party
Roll back
description |
The Personal Telco Project will be installing devices recovered from the failed MetroFi network on two houses adjacent to Arbor Lodge Park in North Portland. This is the first stage of a network that can grow, to extend coverage further afield. Come join other volunteers as we build a service for the community. Learn what is involved, so that we can build more of these networks! |
→ |
We will be installing two SkyPilot devices (salvaged from the failed MetroFi project) to begin construction of an Arbor Lodge Community Network. The work on Saturday will be partly mechanical, physically mounting things with wrenches and ladders. It'll be partly digital, configuring the hardware settings. You can help with your hands and your heads. Bring cameras to help document what we do. It's your network: pitch in, help and learn! |

PDX Web & Design
A completely chaotic, non-directed, organic discussion of our favorite tools, ideas, methodologies, or anything relevant to the group. We had one of these in December (feel free to bring snacks, food, etc) and it went over very well. So well, in fact, many people have requested another sooner rather than later. So here's the deal:
We can set up a laptop on the projector and anyone who is interested can spend 5 minutes discussion and showing off their favorite tools, frameworks, projects - or just stand up and talk. Anyone interested should prepare a bit in advance, keep it short (we're serious about the 5 minute cutoff!), and let's cram as much (web and design related) knowledge as we can in 90 minute!

Rather than posting content on many third-party silos of data, we should all begin owning our own data that we're creating. Publish short status updates on your own domain, and syndicate to Twitter. Publish photos on your own domain, syndicate to Flickr, etc, etc.
This is the basis of the "Indie Web" movement. We'll get together for a day and a half to talk about what has been done in the field, and where still needs to be done. There will be workshops and breakout sessions the second day.

OEN Webinar: How to talk to investors, with Dave Yewman
Roll back
description |

WHAT'S THIS ABOUT?
Picture this: standing up on stage: you, next to a projector screen filled with your slides.
Sitting in the audience: a room full potential investors and influencers who can either help you or dismiss you.
It's showtime. What, exactly, do you say? How, precisely, do you talk to an investor? And can you avoid the oh-so-common mistakes made by dozens of entrepreneurs who've pitched and failed?
If you're someone who's ready to ask for money - or even just someone who wants to get better at presenting - you don't even need to leave your desk. Just grab a cup of coffee and click on the URL that will be sent to you via email after you register for OEN's Webinar: How to talk to investors. Think of it as getting some practical presentation tips while wearing your bunny slippers.
You'll be able to watch presentation coach Dave Yewman demonstrate how to effectively communicate your message, how to get right to the point, and how to avoid common mistakes. You'll also be able to submit questions online.

IEEE OREGON Virtual Worlds Symposium
Roll back
description |
Co-sponsored by: National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research, NCRAR
Goto: http://ewh.ieee.org/mu/oregon-ims-css/ for detailed symposium info.
In the context of this symposium, a virtual world will be defined as a computer-based simulated 3D virtual environment in which users, taking the form of avatars visible to others graphically, inhabit, create and use objects, and interact with each other. Although, the usage of virtual worlds for entertainment purposes might be generally understood, the increased usage of virtual worlds for education, business, professional and commercial applications is not yet well understood.
The purpose of this symposium is introduce 1) present tutorials and examples of usage of a selected virtual social environment, Second Life®, which is being used by the IEEE® professional organization to educate, communicate, and promote membership collaboration, present examples of Second Life being used in a wider range of engineering fields such as architecture, mechanical design, corporate group meetings, 2) present a keynote address by an IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society Distinguished Lecturer on research topics in the area of virtual social environments and multi-player gaming, and, 3) host a âgeekfestâ event with presentations demonstrating wide-ranging universe of virtual worlds, applications, tools, and situations.
It is anticipated the symposium will be jamb-packed with entertaining multimedia presentations, fun for attendees and fun for presenters. The symposium will be considered a success if those attending leave with greater knowledge, deeper understanding, and lots of thoughts on how virtual world technology is, could, or might be applied in our world. Finally, it is hoped the symposium will help foster continued cross-generation, cross-discipline fellowship and learning on this topic.
Speaker(s): Dr. Shervin Shirmohammadi,
Agenda:
Goto: http://ewh.ieee.org/mu/oregon-ims-css/ for detailed symposium info.
<b>Part 0 (4pm to 4:45pm) Introduction to the selected virtual world, Second Life.</b> Not recorded.
Basic introduction to Second Life. For those who have little idea what it is, how it could be used, or how to use it. Includes PBS Digital Nation, parts 6&7, Second Life introductory multimedia.
<b>Part 1 (5pm to 6:15pm) Student presentations: IEEE Second Life and Engineering applications.</b> Recorded.<br/>
[six] 10 minute presentations total. Two general types of student presentations:
⢠Tutorials on Second Life-
How Second Life is being used by the IEEE professional organization and how to use it.
Topics might include but not limited to: what are IEEE Second Life islands, how to enter and use them, extend them, etc. How is IEEE currently using their real estate in Second Life. What is the Second Life grid and mainland. What are other tools available in Second Life. Development and acquisition of objects and real estate in Second Life to create image, personality, establish presence, and conduct oneâs âselfâ.
⢠Demonstrations of engineering in Second Life-
Demonstrations of other significant engineering usages of Second Life model. Examples might include designing products or buildings using simulation.
<b>Break (6:15pm to 7:00pm)</b> Dinner break.
Complementary, self-serve food buffet in symposium area. Partakers encouraged to drop a few cans in foodbank barrels.
<b>Part 2 (7:00pm to 8:30pm) Keynote: Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Shervin Shirmohammadi.</b> Recorded.
Sponsored by IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society Distinguished Lecturer Program: Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Shervin Shirmohammadi, speaking on research topics relating to virtual social environments and multiplayer gaming. Going out beyond Second Life virtual world to a more generalized, universal view of virtual social environments, including technologies and problems getting us there.
<b>Break (8:30pm to 8:45pm).</b> Setup for Geekfest.
<b>Part 3 (8:45pm to 10:30pm). Oregon Virtual Universe Geekfest MMXI.</b> Recorded.
[Eight] 10 minute presentations total. Open up scope to wider universe of virtual worlds and application areas excluding areas of adult/sexual or violent themes or portraying cultural/political insensitivity. Demonstrations and examples on not only Second Life but other virtual worlds being applied in areas which might include engineering, professional, commercial, entertainment, industry, education, communication, social networking, and beyond. Intended to potentially broaden the discussion to a wider range of ideas the virtual world technology is or could be effectively applied to.
<b>Shutdown (10:45pm)</b> Pick the place up and pack it all up.
<b>Clear out (11pm).</b> Cafeteria open on 3rd Floor, open 24 hours!

Galois Tech Talk: Faster Persistent Data Structures Through Hashing
Roll back
description |

Presented by Johan Tibell.
The most commonly used map (dictionary) data type in Haskell is implemented using a size balanced tree. While size balanced trees provide good asymptotic performance, their real world performance is not stellar, especially when used with keys which are expensive to compare, such as strings.
In this talk we will look at two different map implementations that use hashing to achieve better real world performance. The implementations have different performance characteristics: one provides very fast look-ups while the other trades better insert performance for somewhat slower look-ups. I will describe the design of these data structures and show some early benchmark results. |

description |
Come and work with developers, designers, citizens, librarians, statisticians and urban planners to brainstorm and create applications that improve the city you live in. You don't need to process massive data sets, or have knowledge of the latest fancy database. We encourage "small data" projects and creativity in solving problems.
Examples of things to do:
Projects such as: http://grandmagrandma.com/page/projects
Opening data: http://www.opendataday.org
Scraping public data: http://scraperwiki.com/search/boston
Max Ogden will be co-hacking from Boston, where he's currently placed for his Code for America fellowship. |
