An Open Source company landing $5million in venture funding from one of the nation's leading venture capital firms?
That's a story in itself. But when you realize it's a Portland firm - Puppet Labs, and that the investment was lead by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield, you will want to hear the story straight from the horse's mouth - CEO Luke Kanies of Puppet Labs, the makers of a leading open source data center automation and configuration management framework.
Joining him to talk about the opportunities and challenges of an open source start-up will be Stuart Cohen, CEO of CSI (Collaborative Software Initiative), a company that introduces a process for companies to collaboratively build software applications.
Open Source has typically been associated with altruism - software that is given away free and is open to modification by users. The concept became a household word when Portlander Linus Torvalds developed the Linux operating system. Now the list of Open Source and Free Software today includes cutting edge solutions to large scale problems in multiple domains. From languages to runtimes, cloud infrastructure to databases, the best solutions are open-sourced. Leading companies are building on top of open-source components, while giving back to the community. But open source is not just about being cost-effective,it is becoming the key to innovation.
How do open source start-ups thrive in this eco-system? Come and learn from the founders of two innovative start-ups!

EWB provides an opportunity for engineering students and professionals to use their skills to develop sustainable, appropriate technologies for specific applications, to help meet the basic needs of people. Our programs typically start with a focus on providing water and sanitation, but often move into other areas depending on the needs of the people. There is a role for everyone at EWB, from engineers to public health professionals. Rachel will give a background on EWB, our local chapter, and how to get involved. |

Do you attend networking events and wonder why no one calls afterwards? Do you feel left out when your networking with other people? For many people networking is an activity where business cards are exchanged, but thereâs a lot more to networking than just passing cards.
In this class, I will teach you how to build a network based on trust and explain why trust is so important with networking and business in general. Youâll learn how to do more than just offer an elevator speech. Youâll learn:
* The proper attitude for networking and how to set it everyday
* How to ask the right questions at a networking event and in any other situation.
* Why being the person to go to can bring you a lot of business.
* How social networking fits into networking overall
If you want to grow your business, you need to know how to build a network of trust. This class will show you how. Attendees of this class will also be put into a drawing to get one free hour of Business Coaching from me.

TiE Oregon Close Funding Capital - Workshop
Roll back
description |
A workshop to develop an effective investor pitch:
Are you raising money right now for your venture?
Are you finding it difficult to close funds from investors?
Are you needing capital but unsure of the next steps?
This workshop is best suited for those entrepreneurs who are actively raising seed money for their business ideas, or have already started ventures. You will present your investor pitch, get direct feedback and a chance to dramatically improve your pitch as well as gain insight into what causes investors to actually invest their money in start-up companies.
Ravi Sinha, Chairman of Choice Solar, will facilitate the workshop. Mr. Sinha is an experienced entrepreneur who has raised money for various ventures for the past 15 years and has assisted many entrepreneurs in investor pitch development leading to closing funds. He is a pitch coach for OEN and has delivered the workshop at "Start Up" weekends in Corvallis. He also developed and taught âFinancing Emerging Growth Venturesâ at the Graduate School of Business at Portland State University and has served as a member of Angel Oregon assisting in devising the event. His close association with seed, angel, and venture capital investors will be very useful for the start-up entrepreneur to attain the objective of closing investor funds.
Entrepreneurs should come prepared with an investor pitch that takes no more than 10 minutes to deliver. Limited to 10 attendees.
