Hack for Portland's Schools
Roll back
| description |

<b>THE CHALLENGE</b>
Teams will have ten hours to concept and create a prototype that addresses the challenge. Successful ideas will connect Portland citizens to their public schools, and/or engage them in the five ways schools have said would be most useful - a coat, a can, a book, an hour, or a grand. The hack day will conclude with five-minute demos of each team's projects.
<b>BACKGROUND</b>
On June 2nd, in collaboration with the Mayorâs Office and GOOD Magazine, weâre holding a Hack Day to explore how technology can be used to connect Portlandâs public schools with neighborhoods and business.
This project emerged from a GOOD Ideas for Cities event that took place earlier this year. You can see the presentation on GOOD's site.
http://www.good.is/post/supporting-neighborhood-schools-a-good-idea-for-portland/
<b>THE PROBLEM</b>
85% of people in central Portland have no children of school age. This means that the majority has no natural connection with the school system. We want to make it easier for that 85% to support Portlandâs public schools.
Our research with schools and supporting organizations showed that a few simple things â books, food, clothing and people's time â could make a big difference to students. We also learnt that there are many organizations in Portland that are set up to support schools in these ways. We want to build a tool that makes it easy to find these organizations, and to give resources to them.
<b>HACK DAY RESOURCES</b>
To help us solve this, weâll have representatives from Portlandâs public schools and from some of the main organizations who are already supporting these schools. The Software Association of Oregon, which has built CitySync will be joining us as well.
Designers and our partners will be available on the day for further conversations about promotion of the tools that we create.
We are also connecting with the Personal Democracy Forum taking place in NYC the following week, and hope to feed the best ideas into that event.

Portlandâs own Baileyâs Taproom has 20 beers from which pour an ever-rotating array of fine brews representing a wide range of styles emphasizing Oregon breweries. Our main attraction for this event is their "Beer Dashboardâ, a large flat-screen monitor that displays detailed information for each beer on tap, the amount left in each keg, and whoâs checked in through Foursquare as well as tweeting the arrival of a new beer on the menu.
Most software developers love beer, but rarely do both interests so easily combine into a single SAO event. Join us with developer Eric Sterling, the creator of the beer dashboard, as he delves into nuances of this project and his adventures turning restaurant software into business. Afterwards, we invite you to walk over to Baileyâs to see new cool beer technology in action and enjoy a pint yourself!
What's better than combining what Portland does best; beer and technology!

Beyond the Page Object Pattern
Roll back
| description |

<p>I would love to present and share my ideas around how to go beyond the Page Object Pattern to increase maintainability, stability and performance of Selenium automation. Specific topics could include the importance of an abstraction layer between your page objects and selenium itself, some things you can do in that abstraction layer to handle or work around some (in my opinion) not very friendly Selenium behaviors, more specific rules/processes for helper functions in your page objects, when to make exceptions to the Page Object Pattern, etc. I'll have to probably slim it down to a few topics to fit in the time frame. Lastly, I'll share a story about one of the things I am least well known for, which is being the original creator of the Page Object Pattern while working on a UI automation framework internal to Microsoft. Imagine my surprise when I left Microsoft and started getting involved with Selenium and saw a derivative of my Page Object Pattern being used all over the place! :-)</p> |

<p>Thank you volunteers, it will be really interesting to see how hard or easy each framework is compared to another. So that we can compare all the frameworks on the same scale, this is what I propose. <p>Thank you volunteers, it will be really interesting to see how hard or easy each framework is compared to another. So that we can compare all the frameworks on the same scale, this is what I propose. However, if this sounds way too structured or too easy or too hard, feel free to just show up and use your 15 minutes to blow us away with your automation chops in any way you like.</p>
<p><br>
5 Min:<br>
Talk for about your framework. Tell us why you designed it the way it is. Show us how it works. Power Point slides are helpful but not required.<br><br>
5-10 Min:<br>
Demo your framework by accomplishing the following test, you may code this on the fly or prepare some or all of it before hand.<br><br>
Your mission if you choose to accept it:<br>
1.Go to wired.com<br>
2.Search for somethingÂ<br>
3.Open any article<br>
4.Verify that the article contains the Âsomething you searched for.<br>
5.Tweet the article using the tweet button.<br>
5a.Tweet the message: "Tweeted using automation during a Portland Selenium Users Group demo..."<br>
5b.You can assume that the user has previously logged into twitter and you donÂt have to include a twitter login in your demo.<br><br></p>
<p>There are a countless number of ways to implement Selenium, each are tailored to the needs of the application under test.</p>
<p>At the last meetup it was suggested that we can have several mini hands on demos, with Q&A and discussion. Any volunteers?</p>
<p>3 Presentations, each with:<br>

PRESENTATIONS:
* Gregory Benison on applying FP techniques for "real world" problems using C: I would like to present an example from my work in protein biochemistry where ideas from functional programming - namely lazy evaluation and immutable data - were important in approaching a "real world" problem. The program I want to discuss is implemented in C and I believe this to be a good example of how ideas from FP can be useful in almost any language.

Annular Eclipse of the Sun
Roll back
| description |
When the moon is exactly between the earth and the sun, we get eclipses. Full eclipses occur when the moon is near enough to the earth to block the entire disk of the sun, and the earth, moon, and sun are exactly in line (syzygy). Given that the moon and sun are rather small in the sky (half a degree) and that the moon's orbit precesses and is inclined by 5.5 degrees to the earth-sun (ecliptic) orbit, syzygy lineups are rare. Given that the moon is much smaller than the earth, its shadow passes over only a narrow strip from north to south.
If the moon is at apogee, the far extreme of its orbit, it does not block the entire sun, but leaves a ring of bright sunlight around the moon, an "annulus". The ring will be perfect near Crescent City, and the eclipse will block 94% of the sun's disk. Further north near Portland, the sun will peek over the top of the moon, and we will see a crescent, horns down, blocking 88% of the sun at Portland's latitude.
The eclipse becomes visible at sunrise over coastal China on Monday May 21, passes over Japan, the international dateline at local noon, south of Alaska on May 20 and then to Oregon near sunset. It would be way cool if someone would use something like Google Hangout to aggregate webcam feeds from around the Pacific Rim.
This may be the only chance in your lifetime to observe an annular eclipse without traveling halfway around the world, or into space. Eclipses are spooky and cool. Don't miss this one! |

Mobile Portland: When Our Devices Rat Us Out
Roll back
| description |
Every day our smartphones, laptops and other devices transmit invisible bytes of data across networks around the world, leaving a deep and permanent digital footprint. Some of this data we are aware of, such as information we post on social networks, or sharing GPS coordinates with a mapping app to locate the nearest restaurant. However, there is a less visible layer of data that at first may seem innocuous, but once aggregated can provide fragments of data that can be reticulated to unveil information regarding identity, location and other potentially invasive and incriminating evidence. This information can be used to solve crimes, as well as abused. Technology is rapidly increasing the rate at which this data is being used by law enforcement, governments, hackers and advertisers alike, with many surprisingly taking advantage of the hazy gray area where antiquated laws and advanced technology meet.
Ken Westin will be presenting several real-life case studies where he has used various technologies and techniques to track down suspects and stolen devices including laptops, smartphones, digital cameras, flash drives, iPods and more. The evidence and research he has provided to law enforcement around the world has helped unveil and solve larger crimes from organized crime rings, car theft, drugs, identity theft and even a violent car jacking. He will be discussing other technologies and information that law enforcement use such as facial recognition, cell tower simulators and access to wireless carrier and ISP customer records. He will also discuss instances where corporations have have used invasive methods and technologies to gain a competitive edge at the cost of your privacy.
