Hardcore HTML
Roll back

<p>Everyone knows HTML, right? Sort of. Rather than rehashing divs, spans, and img tags, we're going to dive deep into the semantics of html (much of this is HTML5, some is oft-ignored HTML4). We're going to investigate the bleeding edge (some of these aren't even implemented in browsers yet... but most are).</p>
<p>Whether you are a hardcore coder, a designer, or just a part-time web enthusiast, I guarantee you'll learn something new.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Did you know:</p>
<p>Modern browsers support a "required" attribute, stoping an empty field from being submitted without javascript?</p>
<p>There is are special "email", "phone number", and graphical range input types?</p>
<p>There are built-in <meter> and <progress> tags which render as graphics?</p>
<p>When you should use <article>, and when to use <section>?</p>
<p>There's a new "scoped" style spec allowing you to embed CSS that only effect a segment of your DOM?</p>
<p>When older browsers don't support the newest HTML types, there are some really easy scripts to make them backward compatible?</p>
<p> </p>

We meet every month at the Collective Agency in NW Portland (Old Town). No need to RSVP, all are welcome - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers. Beer at nearby pub to follow.
Two fun activities this month:
<p>
Cool map visualization with CartoDB (free account). CartoDB is an Open Source GIS Cloud Database featuring easy data loading and they have support for PostGIS raster, all abstracted through a Javascript API. This is an approachable hack session for the novice or advanced coder (we'll work in pairs or groups).
</p>
<p>
Wiki work! This is an opportunity to get familiar with the wiki and make improvements.

We meet the 4th Wednesday of every month at the Collective Agency in NW Portland (Old Town). No need to RSVP, all are welcome - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers. Beer at nearby pub to follow, probably Pints.
This month: <em>CartoDB Hack Session</em>
this month we don't have a talk lined up so we thought we would shake things up a little bit and do a little hack session as a group with one of the newer kids on the block, <a href="http://cartodb.com">CartoDB</a>. It's data management, map styling/publishing and an API for vector/raster spatial queries all rolled into one without needing to muck with server management. A researchers dream and built on open source goodness. What's that you say you're not a software developer? Perfect because you don't need to be to get started. We can roll up our sleeves and work together, ask lots of silly questions and learn lots of new things.
They offer a free account and tutorial to get started. Should be fun, see you tomorrow. |

Gaming for Social Good
Roll back
| description |

Hosted by Tech4Good and PixelArts
As the use of video games becomes more pervasive--think Angry Birds to Farmville to Wii Fitness--it becomes useful to consider their wider impact on our lives. Are they merely useful for entertainment, or can games help create change through creativity, imagination and play? Can games be valuable for mission-based groups like non-profits, NGOs, and community organizations? How can game design connect students to real-world problems?
Weâll kick off the evening with a panel discussion including speakers at the intersection of gaming and game development for education, non-profit enablement and youth outreach. Our panelists will explore how gaming and the creation of games can positively impact our local communities and wider world mission-based efforts. Following audience Q&A, everyone is welcome to continue the discussion over networking and soft drinks.
Join us to discuss how creating games and game development can benefit the social good!
What: Meetup and Panel Roundtable
When: Thursday, June 21st 6-9pm.
Where: Collective Agency,
Who: Game Developers, Creatives, Educators, Non-Profits, Programmers, Entrepreneurs, Businesses |

Brewpal: informal Drupal meet-up
Roll back
| description |

What is this event? It's an informal meetup each month to work on our own individual Drupal projects in the company of other Drupalers. The idea is that you can work on your own project, ask a question to your neighbor if you're stuck, chat with others about your brilliant Drupal start-up idea, and then take a beer break whenever you want.
If you are bringing your laptop, don't forget to charge it ahead of time (since Lucky Lab's power outlets are minimal).
Here are the details:
Time: 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Lucky Lab Beer Hall 1945 NW Quimby St. Portland, OR 97209 (Yes, they have wifi.)
So get ready to pack up your laptop and see you soon! |

<i>ABOUT THE GROUP: pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. TOPICS:
* Igal Koshevoy: Including system migrations inside configuration management recipes, e.g. rearranging directories. Pros and cons for whether this should even be done and tips to reduce headaches later. There will also be group discussion since it's a common enough need, there are many ways to do this, and it'd be good to hear how others deal with this.

Personal Telco is a collection of individuals, businesses, and organizations who share -- or plan to share -- internet connectivity rather than hoard it. It's also a group of volunteers who want this network to grow. We believe internet access should be available, fair, and uncensored. Whether you're a technology wizard or technically incompetent, volunteering with us is a great way to learn something new, enjoy teaching others, or use your skills to do something useful! |

Open Source Bridge (OSB) invites you to our first Volunteer Meet & Greet of the year. All are welcome. We will be meeting in the mezzanine of the US Bank building for lunch.
OSB Meet & Greets are a great way to learn more about volunteering for the conference and to meet the conference organizers. There will be a total of three meet and greets. Each one will be hosted at a different location in Portland, leading up to the conference June 26-29, 2012.
If you are interested in learning more about volunteering with OSB, please visit our website.

Portland Java User Group: Production-Ready Web Services with Dropwizard
Roll back
| description |
This month's topic: Production-Ready Web Services with Dropwizard
Dropwizard is a Java framework for developing ops-friendly, high-performance, RESTful web services. The library was developed at Yammer and has been adopted by Simple (formerly BankSimple) and the Gilt Groupe. We will discuss how Gilt is using Dropwizard and why we adopted the library.
----------
Speaker: Sean Sullivan
Sean is a software engineer specializing in e-commerce systems, web services development, and mobile applications. Sean works on back-office applications at the Gilt Groupe and has contributed to various open source projects, including the OAuth Java library and OpenID4Java.
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, typically at a nearby location determined ad hoc.

The "Beer Dashboard" App: A Case Study
Roll back
| description |
Portlandâs own Baileyâs Taproom has 20 beers from which pour an ever-rotating array of fine brews representing a wide range of styles emphasizing Oregon breweries. Our main attraction for this event is their "Beer Dashboardâ, a large flat-screen monitor that displays detailed information for each beer on tap, the amount left in each keg, and whoâs checked in through Foursquare as well as tweeting the arrival of a new beer on the menu.
Most software developers love beer, but rarely do both interests so easily combine into a single SAO event. Join us with developer Eric Sterling, the creator of the beer dashboard, as he delves into nuances of this project and his adventures turning restaurant software into business. Afterwards, we invite you to walk over to Baileyâs to see new cool beer technology in action and enjoy a pint yourself!
What's better than combining what Portland does best; beer and technology!
