Stephen Grieco, Senior Account Manager of Struck (Digital Branding and Advertising agency) will present about the concept of frictionless purchasing online, and what it means to everyone working in the web world today. With iPhone's built-in app-store, to Amazon's One-Click purchasing, it's important to remove any barrier between a customer's decision to make a purchase, and actually making it.

If you build any sort of website that wants users to make a purchase at some point, you should attend this talk!

Food will be generously provided by Vitamin T.
|

CHIFOO presents Mobile as Analytics for Life
Roll back
| description |
Julie is on an early morning training run. She has done some running over the last year, but this will be her first marathon. She doesnât have a training partner, but a voice in her ear expertly nudges her on, while her mobile device records her pace, her route, and saves it to a training log in the cloud. A friend comments later on Facebook about her commitment, noting that he has trouble running so early in the morning.
Tryouts for the high school soccer team are in three months, but Steve is starting his training now. A device in the midsole of his shoe and in the soccer ball he uses measures direction and acceleration, and compares his data to his peers and to the pros. An app on his mobile device records his statistics, shows him where he is strong and where he is weak, and gives him a training program to elevate his game.
Analytics, the marriage of computer science and statistics, allows us to derive meaning from large sets of data. Historically it has been the domain of business strategy and marketing, used to zero in on patterns which enable strategists to forecast future market behavior and improve outcomes. New mobile technology allows users to collect their own data, connects them to the best science, and does so in a way that is personal, social, and highly targeted. The Nike+ Sensor records running performance, the Adidas miCoach Speed Cell measures multi-directional motion for sports training, the Withings scale and blood pressure monitor helps people monitor their health, and UP by Jawbone measures activity level, sleep cycles, and eating patterns.
How has user-centered design shaped the direction of these new technologies? In this presentation, Jeanne will explore the ways that people have integrated these devices into their lives and discuss whether the technology has followed through on the promise to improve health, performance, and lifestyle.
About the Speaker
Jeanne Turner is a passionate and versatile interaction designer who is dedicated to creating delightful experiences through greater understanding of user needs, goals, and motivations. After earning a BA in Computer Science with a focus on Human-Computer Interaction, sheâs spent the past 7 years using her skills to build both mobile applications and web environments for clients including Ecotrust, Vanderbilt Owen School of Management, Tektronix, Harvard Business School, Starbucks, and Amazon. Jeanne is also an invaluable part of the Portland interaction design community, serving as the leader and co-leader of the local chapter of IxDA since May of 2008.

Mayhem PIGJam (Game Jam)
Roll back
| description |

The Portland Indie Game Squad will be hosting its third local Game Jam this coming May 25th at the Art Institute of Portland!
We will be starting up at 7pm that Friday evening upon delivery of a game prompt, and our space will be available to us through the evening of Sunday the 27th. A majority of teams will be constructed beforehand, though jammers may participate individually, form a team the night of, or join an existing team.
Some equipment will be provided, including computers w/Unity, UDK, Adobe Suite, Maya/Max, and Office Suite. Jammers will be responsible for providing their own bedding (should they choose to spend the entirety of the weekend in our workspace), food, and additional equipment. Bringing food in the spirit of a potluck is appreciated.
To assist in creating Jam teams, RSVP via http://pigsquad.com/events/mayhem-pigjam with your preferred game development skillset if you plan on participating and do not already have a team formed. Please RSVP regardless; we have room for 50 jammers.
Big thanks to Keld Bangsberg, John Wilkes, and the Art Institute of Portland for their efforts and sponsorship!

UE has gone somewhat dormant, but there is great interest in relaunching the site with newer technology and structured data which can be queried via an API.
Come hang out and chat at Backspace so we can relaunch UrbanEdibles. Feel free to add your suggestions to the Wishlist:

Vibrant Data PDX Hackathon
Roll back
| description |
Imagine a world in which data becomes a personal asset that works on behalf of our personal interests and communities. Everyday, apps like yours could control how to send their data out into the world to circulate and bring back value to users. Certainly this would require a change in the way the world views data today, and in the infrastructure that enables it to flow freely while protected. This event is a first step in building that infrastructure for the benefit of all.
Consider the prospect of Facebook, Google, Amazon, LinkedIn and other data silos bidding against each other for what data you might provide. What kinds of data might be the most interesting? How could that value be enhanced? How could you collect it with minimal effort? How would your privacy be protected? What could you get in return?
At this event youâll pick a particular type of personal data and build an app to show how its value as a personal asset can be enhanced. The app can be mobile, desktop, web or something else.
About Vibrant Data
Inspired by the Arab Spring popular uprisingsâ use of Facebook and Twitter, The Vibrant Data Project is trying to understand the development landscape that is giving rise to the Gutenburg press of our era: disruptive communication and commerce vehicles that have the potential to overthrow corrupt regimes, spread new ideas, broaden economic opportunity, improve health and well being and aid in the fight for social justice and human rights.

OpenBSD by Bryan Linton
OpenBSD is a free *nix-like operating system that focuses on security, correctness and developer freedom. With only two remote holes in the default install in over 10 years, OpenBSD has a reputation of being one of the most secure operating systems in common use.
This talk will present a basic overview of what OpenBSD is,
and will heavily emphasize what its strengths are. It will also
cover the various methods OpenBSD uses to remain secure.
With OpenBSD 5.1 arriving May 1st, we will also discuss some of its new features and improvements.
Many of us will go to the The Lucky Lab Northwest Beer Hall at 1945 NW Quimby after the presentation. |

The building entrance is on SW Columbia between 2nd and 3rd Avenue. The door may be locked, but there's a guard on site that will let you in and you can use the doorbell to summon them. Ask the guard nicely to let you up to the 2nd floor conference room, the elevators require them to use a key card. When you get to the 2nd floor, just follow the "pdxruby" signs. This meeting space is kindly offered to us by Robert Half Technology, a company that provides IT staffing services and positions: http://www.roberthalftechnology.com/ |
