Creative Mornings Lecture - Rilla Alexander
Roll back
| description |

**Tickets are free, but you have to get one at the event website.**
Rilla Alexander is an Australian illustrator and graphic designer whose work has appeared on everything from toys and tea cups to busses and buildings. Her cast of characters dance across Museo del Prado’s ceramics and stationery, populate Swiss Credit Cards and sleep on the walls of a Copenhagen hotel (where she replaced the bed with a tent).
Rilla’s work has been showcased at Paris’ cultural mecca Colette and at the Museé de la Publicité/Louvre. She leads a masterclass in character design at the Pictoplasma Academy in Berlin and is currently teaching illustration at the PNCA. Rilla has published several books celebrating creativity – including the collaborative toy project “Neighbourhood” and her picture books “The Best Book in the World” and “Her Idea”.
Rilla will speak about committing to an idea – and that fateful moment play and potential are stopped in their tracks by procrastination and preciousness. She is interested in where ideas come from and how to take them all the way to THE END.

Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers!
We are reading [Practical Object-Oriented Design in Ruby](http://www.poodr.com) by Sandi Metz. This week we will discuss chapters 5-6. Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it.
Make sure to grab food before. |

This month we have a very meta topic. First we'll have a short talk on "How to Host a Mini Workshop" by Howard Abrams followed by a mini workshop on Yesql. How awesome is that?!?
We may also have time for another talk which I'm trying to confirm and/or we'll have open Q&A. |

EAST Knowledge - Locating Intrusions Using Fiber Optics
Roll back
| description |
EAST Knowledge invites you to attend our fifth meeting!
* **What:** Locating Intrusions Using Fiber Optics
* **Who:** Jim Rulla
* **Where:** The Story Room at the Gresham Library
* **When:** 10:30am-Noon, Saturday, April 18, 2015
* **Why:** Sharing what we know
Interferometers measure distances to within fractions of the wavelength of light. Put a couple of these incredibly sensitive devices on the fence around an airport, and you can not merely detect a would-be intruder — you can locate him. Put a pair on a pipeline, and you can not merely detect nearby digging that could damage the pipe — you can locate its source. You might even be able to detect — and perhaps even locate — leaks in the pipe.
The detection and location mechanisms are fascinating examples of clever engineering. I'll explain how these patented systems work and illustrate new algorithms that improve performance. |

Launch Event: City of Portland Early Adopter Program
Roll back
| description |
Please join us for the public launch of the City of Portland Early Adopter Program. This initiative seeks to better connect local Portland companies that can provide smart tech solutions with city bureaus needing improvements in operations, maintenance and capital projects. The public sector is a viable testing ground for innovations developed by the private sector, in particular those produced by early stage entrepreneurs. As the go-to resource for public and private interaction on cooperative projects, the Early Adopter Program will foster better information exchange and more efficient decision making between city departments and local industry.
At this event, you will:
Learn about City Bureaus and the innovation challenges that your company may help solve
Meet with city staff and discuss specific problem statements in a roundtable format
Introduce and promote your company
Discover how the Early Adopter program can be a resource for your company
We will be sending more information before the event on specific problem statements that bureaus will present for the roundtable sessions. |

We have a speaker and a half for this meeting with a focus on windows.
Aaron Jensen: Aaron discovered programming over 14 years ago, and has never looked back. He specializes in making developer-focused tools and automating everything he can. He's spent most of his career working with Microsoft technologies, but did run his own OS X server for several years, so knows Perl, PHP, and Ruby on Rails exist. For almost 7 years he has worked for WebMD Health Services. He is currently obsessed with PowerShell and weeps whenever he sees a batch script or someone using cmd.exe. His open-source project Carbon, a PowerShell module for automating the configuration of Windows servers and workstations, has been downloaded over 2,000 times, probably by the same person. He loves chocolate, movies, video games, table-top games, TV, books, and using movie quotes in situations only he understands. He hates yard work, taking out the garbage, owning a house, and his therapist, but probably not in that order. He lives in Beaverton with his wife, two kids and the money he is saving for his children's future therapy bills. You can watch him remain silent on Twitter @splatteredbits.
Topic: Piloting DSC at WebMD Health Services
In Q2 2014, we piloted Desired State Configuration at WebMD Health Services. Come learn about our DSC authoring platform and patterns, security, how we use DSC to configure applications on developer computers, configuration deployment, and lessons learned."
Nick Chappel (who everyone should know at this point) may also be giving a brief talk on building windows flavored vagrant machines.

Northwest Regional Women in Computing Conference
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The Northwest Regional Women in Computing (NWrWIC) Celebration focuses on empowering and encouraging women to enter the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, particularly computer science. The conference brings together students from universities and high schools, with industry leaders from the private and public sectors to engage and inspire the next generation of leaders to play an active role in shaping the future of computing and technology.
The 2015 conference is the fourth annual event. Our mission is to encourage women to pursue and build successful careers in computing and technology by improving their educational experience and engagement with industry leaders. With less than 30% of STEM jobs filled by women, the industry is lacking full representation of the world’s views. This lack of diversity inhibits industry’s innovation potential. Our effort recognizes and empowers women who are part of the computing industry and celebrates all who are supporters of them.
If you are the following, then you would want to come:
College professionals
industry leaders
Job seekers
STEM/Technology leaders
Thought leaders
Professors
Teachers
High School STEM students (must be accompanied by guardian)

Lean Coffee discussions are where we discuss a wide variety of questions that you bring for feedback, inquiry and laughs with fellow Agile practitioners. You pick your poison (in more ways than one). Sharpies and sticky notes are our agenda-setting tools of choice!

**"And the winner for Best Actor is..." -Pid Spawnington**
Well, we managed to kick things off with solid attendance, some competition that came down to the wire, and valuable lessons learned all around. Let's see if we can build some momentum as we take a dip into how Elixir handles concurrency and how we might solve problems with those tools and patterns.
For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.
Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns.
If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.
Food and drink will be provided. There will also be small desk fodder prizes for the winning teams.
Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.
http://elixir-lang.org/install.html
If you'd like to take a look at the previous session's exercise feel free to check it out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/prime , some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches.
Special thanks to Daniel Hedlund and CrowdCompass, ‘The leading mobile app provider for conferences and meetings’, for hosting us. |
