update Calagator::Event 1250467524 World Information Architecture Day 2015 Roll back

description WORLD IA DAY - ARCHITECTING HAPPINESS THROUGH DESIGN THINKING - FREE! Our world is increasingly made of information, yet so much of that information is not as clear or accessible as it could be to those it is intended for. Every organization out there seems to say that they want to make their users happy, but who is really delivering on those promises? Who is really architecting for happiness? On February 21, 2015 we want to ask the world to help us uncover answers to questions we believe to be critical to the future of what Information Architecture is and how we practice it: Can information affect happiness? How can we best architect structures for information that promote happiness? What work are organizations doing to bridge the gaps we face as we transition from a primarily analog to a primarily digital way of life? What does Information Architecture actually mean? Speakers: 9:00 - 10:00 Thoughtful Architecture and City Systems Design Spencer Williams Architect and City Planner _______________________________________________________ 10:00 - 11:00 Optimal Sequencing - Human Interaction Design Designing success in life and business through the strategic sequencing of interpersonal communication. Thubten Comerford He is a Co-Founder of Pitchlandia, Founder & CEO of WePost Media _______________________________________________________ 11:00 - 12:00 Designing Powerful Facilitated Work Sessions Brainstorming doesn't work. This talk is focused on how to design powerful, effective work sessions, which result in high-fidelity team interaction and create happiness for all involved. The most important takeaway will be how the design of the agenda extends beyond the work session, which will reveal techniques you can use right away. For example; shifting from follow-up design tasks to design experiments can be seen as a happier way of producing more innovative solutions. We will explain the best ways to document and track your ideas to help them become reality by engendering ownership from each team member and instill confidence across all stakeholders. Chris Do, Co-Founder, BlindLA and Jose Caballer, Chief Education Officer, The Skool+Director of Digital Strategy @BlindLa ______________________________________________________ 13:00 - 14:00 Happiness Design for Job Seekers, Employers and Clients For the job seeker, orchestrating a job search can be just as challenging as a company's internal process design required to source and retain talent. I will be delving into both sides of the equation to uncover tools to help find the 'right fit' through the following steps: interview process design, cultural alignment, values assessment, workplace atmosphere design and motivating benefit packages. Learn about how all these processes and practices can positively shape the future vision of the company and all those employed within. Shannon Anderson Recruiting Director at ISITE Design _______________________________________________________ 14:00 - 15:00 Identity Design: Breaking The Binary Gender Code Genderqueer Supermodel Rain Dove will help audiences become more aware of identity design through a look at binary gender identity ('he' and 'she'), its origins and why this form of social design is no longer relevant. This person will discuss implementation of a new system of gender identity, which exposes the advantages of designing one's own identity and thus engagement with the world around them. Rain Dove Androgynous Supermodel and Public Figure _______________________________________________________ 15:00 - 16:00 Not Enough Cooks In The Kitchen: Curating Food Culture with Technology & Design How does technology and information design around food impact how we cook and eat? In a world marked by an increasing sense of culinary culture amnesia, cooking is a lost art and many have a fragmented and distant relationship to food. So, the world needs more cooks - people who craft their world through a lens of food, cooking and eating. Cooking is not only a potent symbol of empowerment, it is among the most human of all acts that stands at the center of an opportunity for widespread social impact. An increase in cooking has innumerable positive outcomes for individuals, communities and our planet. As an example, cooking literacy is at the core of how we will solve our public health and chronic illness crisis. In designing learning technologies and educational experiences to build confidence in the kitchen, I am on a mission to (re)produce food culture through active participation and engagement with others. Ken Rubin VP Culinary Training, Rouxbe Online Cooking School _______________________________________________________ Guest Speaker, TBD! ______________________________________________________ 18:00 - 19:00 Designing For The Unknown Charles Adler Designer, Kickstarter Co-Founder ______________________________________________________ ABOUT WORLD IA DAY World Information Architecture Day is a free one-day conference hosted annually by the Information Architecture Institute and held simultaneously in selected cities all over the world. description WORLD IA DAY - ARCHITECTING HAPPINESS THROUGH DESIGN THINKING It's FREE all day, but you MUST MUST register. Go here: https://wiadpdx.eventbrite.com When information is clear and considerate of the context in which we need it, there is a certain peaceful joy that washes over us. We feel loved or cared for. We crave the feeling that someone carefully considered our needs and expectations. Whether it is the details that the chef has provided about the seasonal items on her menu or the interface that allows you to see the real time progress of robots racing on the moon, information holds the power to make us happy, gleeful, joyful, giddy, intrigued, relieved, enthralled and many other potent cocktails of emotions. Our world is increasingly made of information, yet so much of that information is not as clear or accessible as it could be to those it is intended for. description nil abstract: Idris is a pure functional language with full dependent types. In this series of tech talks, Idris contributor David Christiansen will provide an introduction to programming in Idris as well as using its development tools. Topics to be covered include the basics of dependent types, embedding DSLs in Idris, Idris’s notion of type providers, a general outline of the implementation strategy, the C FFI, and the effects library. Each talk has an associated set of exercises as well as suggested projects for further learning. Participants are expected to be familiar with functional programming in either Haskell or an ML. bio: David Raymond Christiansen is a Ph.D. student at the IT University of Copenhagen. For the last few months, he has been an intern at Galois, working on verifiable elections and better user interfaces for DSLs. His interests include functional programming languages, domain-specific languages, and environments that make them useful. David has contributed features such as type providers and error reflection to the Idris language as well as significant parts of the Emacs-based IDE. Additionally, he is a co-host of The Type Theory Podcast.

Women can transform their lives by jumping in and getting involved in their dreams. At this event, you’ll see an inspiring movie called Girl Rising. Want to understand the basics behind all the cool gadgets we use every day? It all starts with circuits! And we’ll have a fun activity for beginners. What is this event? It’s a combination movie showing and hands-on activity. It’s a chance for high school girls to meet women in technology and a chance for women in technology to be inspired by high school girls! <strong>Who's invited?</strong> We’re excited to have an Intel WIN and ChickTech event! If you identify with any of the following, we’d love to have you: Current and past ChickTech: High School participants Current and past ChickTech volunteers ChickTech supporters Intel WIN members Future ChickTech volunteers and supporters <strong>Why should you come?<strong> It’s free! There will be snacks. But seriously, this is an event to watch and reflect on women’s empowerment in tech by watching Girl Rising. We’ll also have an educational (and fun, we promise!) hands-on activity and create your very own circuit. If you’re a ChickTech: High School participant, we’ll do our best to provide transportation to the event, free of charge. <strong>Who’s hosting?</strong> Intel WIN (Women in Intel Network) Oregon will be co-hosting this event with ChickTech. Intel is graciously hosting the event, and ChickTech is working hard to plan and run the event. <strong>Public Transportation</strong> HF3 is a 7 minute walk from the Hawthorn Farm MAX Station on the blue line and 4 minutes from the nearest bus stops on Cornell Rd on route 48.</strong></strong> Did you ever think you could change the world by pursuing your dreams? create Calagator::Event 1250467607 Workfrom Friday Roll back

description nil Thanks to everyone who came out to Case Study yesterday. That was a lot of fun! Several cohorts want to have a Workfrom Friday tomorrow, so we're making it happen! If you're up for some Friday coworking, we'll meet at Tilt on NW 13th and Everett. Colby and Nathan will be there at 10:30 with smiling faces. If you're not sure who they are, they've both got Workfrom.co sickers on their Macbooks. FYI - If you don't have a sticker for your laptop yet--let us know! About the venue: There's a very large table just inside the main entrance to the left that works well for a group. There are plenty of outlets and room for standing and sitting. Tilt has a full menu, coffee, tea and a full bar. The fare is blue collar American--burgers, sandwiches and salads, all large portions. There's also a big selection of pies. As usual, more details can be found at https://workfrom.co/tilt-pearl-district ** WANT TO SCHEDULE A MEETUP FOR ANOTHER DAY? Leave Jewel or Darren a note and we'll hook you up. **

We will take the last 30 or so minutes of the night to show and tell. All skill levels are welcome. We'll code in Ruby but those who know other languages are welcome as well. Come join us to enjoy some creative coding time where we all can learn from each other, try out wacky ideas and cultivate our skills in a fun, low-pressure environment. New Relic is generously hosting this new event and providing food and refreshments. Break into small teams! Build something awesome! Share the results! create Calagator::Event 1250467601 Social Entrepreneurs Meetup - PDX Roll back

description nil Every third Thursday we hold our main Meetup at Hatch. The primary theme of our group is: Social Entrepreneurs - PDX: How we help each other solve business and social problems. We consist of over 300 members of which 1/3 are business owners, or trying to start a business, 1/3 are freelancers that support small business, and 1/3 are folks with shared interests or who are networking. We plan to hear five or six five minute pitches from social entrepreneurs. Some nights we will hold Mastermind events where a specialist fields questions, other times we do Crowdsolving events where the attendees ask their questions or ask for help with a problem and the group provides feedback, ideas, connections, suggestions. Overall, we are a fascinating group of highly motivated changemakers. Hatch is a great co-working space, so if you have not been there, this is a good time to check it out. Cold beer and treats are always provided. Suggested Donation is $5 to $10 I look forward to seeing you there. If you would like to speak (not really a pitch, just casual information) about a local social enterprise or know someone who would, please contact me. (contact info is above)

create Calagator::Event 1250467600 PDX PMI Agile Roundtable: Agile PM Vision 2015 Roll back

description nil This month's roundtable focuses on what we want to see happen for Agile PM as a profession and as a practice in Portland for 2015. We the doers are the influencers. How we are and the methods we use on the projects we lead shape not only our own futures and the future of the projects but also grow the profession. We lead projects. We share experiences and learning. And, from this, we build our competency and extend our reach as agilists in the PM community. Come share with your peers what draws you to agile and what you would like to see happen in the Agile PM community and in Agile PM practice in Portland in 2015. Feel free to bring your lunch. Unitus generously provides a lunch-friendly meeting space.

create Calagator::Event 1250467599 PDX Big Data Discussion Group Roll back

description nil "No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it." We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately. This month's paper is [Visual Analysis of Large Heterogeneous Social Networks by Semantic and Structural Abstraction](http://eliassi.org/papers/shen-tvcg06.pdf) by Shen etal. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely. Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions. There will be pizza.
