WORLD IA DAY - ARCHITECTING HAPPINESS THROUGH DESIGN THINKING
It's FREE all day, but you MUST MUST register. RSVPing here is not the same as registration. Go here:
https://wiadpdx.eventbrite.com
When information is clear and considerate of the context in which we need it, there is a certain peaceful joy that washes over us. We feel loved or cared for. We crave the feeling that someone carefully considered our needs and expectations.
Whether it is the details that the chef has provided about the seasonal items on her menu or the interface that allows you to see the real time progress of robots racing on the moon, information holds the power to make us happy, gleeful, joyful, giddy, intrigued, relieved, enthralled and many other potent cocktails of emotions.
Our world is increasingly made of information, yet so much of that information is not as clear or accessible as it could be to those it is intended for. Every organization out there seems to say that they want to make their users happy, but who is really delivering on those promises? Who is really architecting for happiness?
On February 21, 2015 we want to ask the world to help us uncover answers to questions we believe to be critical to the future of how we practice information architecture:
How can information affect happiness?
How can we best architect structures for information that promote happiness?
What work are organizations doing to bridge the gaps we face as we transition from a primarily analog to a primarily digital way of life?
Speakers for WIAD2015 in Portland in order:
Keynote: Charles Adler, Co-founder - Kickstarter: Enterprise Design
Jose Caballer, Co-founder - The Skool: Brainstorm Design
Ken Rubin, VP Culinary Training - Rouxbe Online Cooking School: Curriculum and Food Culture Design
Surj Patel, Former CEO - GigaOM: Database and Information Management Design
Rain Dove Dubilewski, Androgynous Super Model and Public Figure: Breaking the Binary Gender Code: Addressing the culture, influence, and construct of gender design
Thubten Comerford, Co-founder Pitchlandia: Interpersonal Communication Design
Shannon Anderson, Recruiting Director - ISITE: Team and Workplace Design
Trent Still, Director of Design and Fabrication - ADX: Prototyping and product development design
PLUS! A special guest...stay tuned.

WORLD IA DAY - ARCHITECTING HAPPINESS THROUGH DESIGN THINKING

**NOTE: Change of Venue!**
We're going to change things up this month and will be hosting our first meeting of the year downtown. Join us at the [Portland Incubator Experiment (PIE) office][piepdx], located at 12th and NW Davis.
----
Dana Jacobsen will give a talk on his number theory module. This is an early version of the talk for FOSDEM.
This talk describes the history, design, and implementation details of a number theory module for Perl. With implementations for most functions in C, C+GMP, and Perl this offers speed on most platforms as well as portability. Comparisons will be made with tools such as Pari/GP, SymPy, SAGE, Primo, OpenPFGW, and others.
[Full synopsis here][synopsis]
We'll migrate to Life of Riley or another nearby venue after the meeting for drinks and food.

#Mobile Strategy for Today and Tomorrow#
##A mobile thought leaders panel moderated by Rick Turoczy##
**› Please RSVP via Eventbrite [HERE](http://bit.ly/13QxjLR)**
Just a few short years ago, most organizations didn’t even have a mobile app. Today mobile has infiltrated virtually every sector of industry and mobile e-commerce generates over half of all e-commerce sales. Is it important for every organization to have a mobile strategy?
To address this question, New Relic is kicking off 2015 with our first ever FutureTalks PDX speaker panel! This event will bring together local thought leaders in the mobile app space to discuss the strategies and challenges their organizations face in building and managing high performing mobile apps or services, and the teams that support them.
These visionaries include:
* Kevin Hurst, VP/GM Portland Office, eBay
* Sasha Mace, Director of Mobile, Simple
* Michael Richardson, Co-Founder and Director of Product, Urban Airship
* Sridhar Solur, Managing Director, Next Gen Computing- Wearables, IOT
Panelists will be asked to reflect on the challenges and key strategies they employ today, and how they see mobile strategy evolving for their organizations in the future. If you have a specific question(s) that you would like us to consider posing to our speakers, please email those to [email protected].
**› Doors will open at 5:30p for a networking happy hour! The food, beer and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic. The presentation will begin right at 6:30.**
› FutureTalk is brought to you by [New Relic](http://www.newrelic.com) in collaboration with [TAO](http://www.techoregon.org) |

Break into small teams! Build something awesome! Share the results!
At brightnight, we will start with a challenge, break into small groups, then create and code our ideas into existence! We will take the last 30 or so minutes of the night to show and tell. All skill levels are welcome. We'll code in Ruby but those who know other languages are welcome as well.
Come join us to enjoy some creative coding time where we all can learn from each other, try out wacky ideas and cultivate our skills in a fun, low-pressure environment.
New Relic is generously hosting this new event and providing food and refreshments. |

Portland Virtual Reality Meetup
Roll back
| description |

Join us for the inaugural Portland Virtual Reality Meetup!
This is an important moment in the history of virtual reality. For decades VR has been available only to high-budget research laboratories. But that is changing quickly. True immersive VR is finally making its way into the hands-and homes-of early adopters. Come and meet fellow VR enthusiasts, experimenters, and developers, and let's help each other explore this fascinating new frontier together.
We expect to have several speakers, with plenty of time for demos, show and tell, etc.
Confirmed Speakers:
* Kent Bye - (Portland Virtual Reality Organizer) Introduction and vision for Portland Virtual Reality
* MORE SPEAKERS TBD
If you have a project that you would like to share with the group, or a topic you would like to speak about, please contact Kent Bye.
If you have an Oculus Rift or have any other interesting VR hardware or software to share, please consider bringing it along for the demo and show and tell portion of the event.
Doors open at 6:30PM, speakers start at 7:00. |

<p>If you're like me, you spend WAYYYY too much time in front of a computer. I think it would be great to have a monthly get together at a bar or pub to just get to know each other, have a brew, and yes, talk about the business. Real human interaction, in other words. Repeats the last Tuesday of every month.</p> <p>Starting September 24th we will be changing venues to Romtoms, on the east side of the bridge at Burnside and 6th St. We hope there will be more room and it will be easier to find the rest of us. We look forward to seeing everyone.</p> <p>If you can't find us inside look for us out in the back we may be enjoying the sunshine and the beautiful open patio.</p> |
