eBay Tech Tuesday: The Evolution of Culture in Portland Tech
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
“Culture” was the Merriam-Webster word of the year in 2014. In the startup world, the word permeates job interviews, board room meetings, and conversations around the water cooler. But what does culture actually mean when applied to tech companies of all sizes?
To answer this question, eBay is launching it’s monthly Tech Tuesday series with a panel-based conversation about culture. We’ve gathered new voices in thought leadership to bring fresh ideas to this topic, while considering and respecting what we’ve learned from the past.
Panelists include:
Lindsay Wolff Longsdon , Co-Founder/Advisor, Culture Lab @WolffLogsdon
Bruce Yarnall, Director of Mobile QA, eBay Marketplaces
Donald Truxillo, Ph.D., Professor, Industrial/Organizational Psychology
Moderator: Sara Morrow, Talent Partner at eBay Marketplaces @PDXsaram
We purposely expanded the typical HR heavy culture panel to a manager of technical teams, a startup founder, and a professor who researches both methods employers use to hire workers and perceptions of potential employees during recruitment and hiring.
These panelists will help us illuminate how culture is applied throughout the whole process of engaging an employee: from attraction to a company, hiring, integrating, ongoing development, to promotions or exits. The end result? Some common understandings of what culture means, as well as, how we can navigate the nuances as employers and/or employees.
RSVP through Meetup to attend “The Evolution of Culture in Portland Tech.” We look forward to seeing you!

ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.

The 1 Million cups weekly meetings are a great opportunity for people and founders to connect.
Each week we invite a founder of a local startup or unique local business to give a short presentation. Then we follow up with a productive guided Q & A from the audience. Founders learn great insights about the businesses and the audience learns from people making great ideas happen in our exciting Portland startup scene.
During the month of January we are focussing on Female Founders. In February we bring in Foodie Founders. Stay tuned for March's theme!
No registration needed, no pretense allowed, just great coffee, conversation and connections every week. Come on by. |

Best Practices in Patent Monetization - Making Your IP a Profit Center | Technology & IP Event
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Intellectual Property is a vital part of a company's value. Not only are Patent and Trademark portfolios crucial to protecting a company's intellectual property asset but they can also be a key revenue generator.
With the large growth in IP transactions and deals, companies are now looking at creating stronger ROI from their IP portfolios. As a result, IP leaders are being held more accountable for the revenue generated from their portfolios and companies are looking for ways to monetize their patents that would otherwise sit on the shelf.
Some companies begin their monetization process by developing their portfolios. Techniques such as brainstorming, patent mapping, core technology charting, filing decisions and continuance planning are some of the methods used to prepare for an IP monetization strategy. These steps should be completed before attempting to monetize any part of the portfolio. This seminar will explain and address these techniques.
The seminar will also assist you in creating an IP monetization strategy that meets your business goals. This includes defensive planning.
**Topics that will be addressed at the seminar:**
• How to strategically build an IP Portfolio
• Selection, analysis and valuation of targets and your IP portfolio
• Options for monetization
• Benchmarks of a strong monetization program
• Limiting the risks of monetization
• Defense posture and what you can do now to limit your target profile
• What to do if you receive a “cease and desist or infringement letter”
• Lowering legal and settlement costs
**Presenters:**
* **[Steve Taylor](https://www.linkedin.com/pub/steve-taylor/88/280/b3a)** , Principal, IPStrom
* **[Joe Shallenburger](https://www.linkedin.com/in/joeshallenburger), Chief Patent Counsel, IPStrom
**Who should attend?**
General Counsel, CTOs, VPs of Engineering and CEOs who are interested in changing their IP department from a cost center to a profit center.
