All meetings are open to the public. Please feel free to drop by to say hello, ask questions, or show off something interesting! We currently have casual, bi-weekly meetings every other Monday. We also have less-frequent "formal" meetings featuring presentations, performances and other interesting activities like OpenDork (where anyone can have a few minutes to discuss their latest project, ideas or whatever). Watch this space for announcements. |

We're bringing this event back to where it all began, Tilt! It's incredible to see how big this event has gotten since we started it 9 months ago.
I know a bunch of you have asked about events or meetups where you could grab a cup of coffee with other people in the tech community. This has been a great even to meet quite a bit of people in one event who are all working to build something pretty special. I love these events and look forward to them every month.
Hope to see you there! |

Look for us in the upstairs area as you walk in. There are two big tables up there so there should be enough room for everyone.
Bring plenty of business cards and be ready to talk about what you're working on. |

Science on Tap - Fruit Flies and Alcohol
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Date: Wednesday, January 14, 2015
Time: Doors at 6 p.m. event at 7 p.m.
Location: Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main Street, Vancouver, Wash.
Cost: [$8 online advance tickets](https://viaproductions.seatengine.com/shows/22466) , $10* suggested cover at the door. This is an all-ages event.
Food & Drink: Beer, wine, pizza slices, popcorn and snacks available.
Event Description:
Those pesky fruit flies that seem to come out of nowhere have actually evolved a pretty sophisticated way to stay healthy. Fruit flies are often host to parasitic wasps who lay their eggs inside the flies and which, after they hatch, consume the flies from the inside out. (Yes, like the movie Alien.) Since fruit flies are often around rotting, fermenting fruits, the flies that are infected with the parasitic wasps will actively seek out otherwise harmful levels of alcohol that has the effect of killing off the wasps in their system. They can also identify the wasps by sight, and when they see them, they will lay their eggs on more alcoholic food sources in (presumably) an effort to protect their offspring from being infected in the future. [Todd Schlenke](http://academic.reed.edu/biology/professors/schlenke/), PhD, professor of biology at Reed College, will talk about his studies that seem to show fruit flies self medicating and discuss how alcohol might be used as medication in humans as well.
_________
Science on Tap is a science lecture series where you can sit back, enjoy a pint, and laugh while you learn. Listen to experts talk about the science in your neighborhood and around the world. You don’t have to be a science geek to have fun—all you need is a thirst for knowledge!
_________
Science on Tap at the Kiggins is produced in partnership with Washington State University Vancouver.
_________
*A note on the suggested cover at the door: Science on Tap is supported, in part, by money collected at the door. We are committed to offering educational opportunities to adults who want to learn, so if $10 is a hardship for you, please come anyway and donate what you can. |

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
# PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
### Chris Dillon: Arduino Cat Faucet
### Casey Rosenthal: *Ruby v Elixir*
#
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
# Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!
#
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
<em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

World Information Architecture Day 2015
Roll back

WORLD IA DAY - ARCHITECTING HAPPINESS THROUGH DESIGN THINKING
It's FREE all day, but you MUST MUST register. RSVPing here is not the same as registration. Go here:
https://worldiadaypdx2015.eventbrite.com
When information is clear and considerate of the context in which we need it, there is a certain peaceful joy that washes over us. We crave the feeling that someone carefully considered our needs and expectations.
Our world is increasingly made of information, yet so much of that information is not as clear or accessible as it could be to those it is intended for. Every organization out there seems to say that they want to make their users happy, but who is really delivering on those promises?
Who is really architecting for happiness? On February 21, 2015 we want to ask the world to help us uncover answers to questions we believe to be critical to the future of how we practice information architecture:
Speakers for WIAD2015 in Portland in order:
<b>Keynote: Charles Adler, Co-founder - Kickstarter: Enterprise Design</b>
Jose Caballer, Co-founder - The Skool: Brainstorm Design
Ken Rubin, VP Culinary Training - Rouxbe Online Cooking School: Curriculum and Food Culture Design
Surj Patel, Former CEO - GigaOM: Database and Information Management Design
Rain Dove Dubilewski, Runway Model: Gender Design
Thubten Comerford, Co-founder Pitchlandia: Interpersonal Communication Design
Shannon Anderson, Talent Acquisition - ISITE: Team and Workplace Design
Trent Still, Director of Design and Fabrication - ADX: Prototyping and product development design
PLUS! A special guest...stay tuned.

<p>2014 was a year of wearables, launches, failures, and experimentation. It was a classic technology revolution year. But new tech isn't about next year tech, it's about last year's tech perfected. Perfecting revolutions requires an act of evolution, and the next year or two will be rife with it.</p> <p>Let's look at the revolution of new wearable successes of the previous year (quantitative self, smart watches) and wearables that require more evolution in the coming years (Google Glass, smart clothes) for mainstream success. What can we do to help evolve this space?</p> |

Keynote: Charles Adler, Co-founder - Kickstarter: Enterprise Design
Jose Caballer, Co-founder - The Skool: Brainstorm Design
Ken Rubin, VP Culinary Training - Rouxbe Online Cooking School: Curriculum and Food Culture Design
Surj Patel, Former CEO - GigaOM: Database and Information Management Design
Rain Dove Dubilewski, Runway Model: Gender Design
Thubten Comerford, Co-founder Pitchlandia: Interpersonal Communication Design
Shannon Anderson, Talent Acquisition - ISITE: Team and Workplace Design
Trent Still, Director of Design and Fabrication - ADX: Prototyping and product development design
PLUS! A special guest...stay tuned.

Entrance to Left Bank Annex (not Left Bank) is on Weidler between Williams and Vancouver. This is caddy-corner to East Garage at Rose Quarter, which lies just by the east bank of the Broadway Bridge. It's on the streetcar tracks and there is a stop right in front of Stingray Cafe. |

New Year's Resolutions don't work. Chance favors the prepared. We're grabbing every opportunity by the scruff of the neck and making every minute count. Portland startups are claiming success for the New Year. January 10th the members of Portland's startup scene are getting together to kick off the New Year Portland style!
We will have a hosted bar with great beer and wine, along with a buffet and awesome music!
There are so many great groups, organizations and meetups in Portland that it's easy to get lost and only meet a small portion of this huge community. This will be the best chance to meet the up-and-comers, the recent stars and the new players on the scene.

Introduction to Programming
Roll back
| description |

No coding experience is necessary! At minimum, you should be comfortable using computers. At most, you may have done some HTML and/or CSS, but aren't a professional developer.
We'll cover the basics of how the web works, what part languages and frameworks and other buzzwords play, and then we'll dive into some programming fundamentals using JavaScript! By the end, you'll have a good sense of how to continue learning web programming.
We'll use the Epicodus curriculum from www.learnhowtoprogram.com. Feel free to check it out in advance and also to jump into the curriculum wherever you're most comfortable. During the workshop, you will be able to work through the curriculum at your own pace, but we would suggest pairing up with another attendee for support.
You don't need to bring a computer, but you can bring headphones (you'll go through some video tutorials).
We look forward to seeing you there! |

Thursdays are open house night here at CTRL-H. This is when members gather and can open the door for you. We know we can be there by 7:00PM, but most of the time we are hours early. We don't have an opening ceremony or any formal meeting. This is a time for you to eavesdrop on other peoples projects and get support on a project that you may need help with. Bring your inventions, your technical toys and your broken microwave to CTRL-H and Hack with friends. |

Epicodus is a 20 week, full time, in-person class on programming. You'll learn everything you need to know to get a job as a web developer or build your startup's app.
At Epicodus, you'll learn how to build web applications from top to bottom with modern technologies and practices. More importantly than any particular skill, though, you'll learn how to think like a programmer, write good code, and pick up new languages and technologies in this fast-changing industry.
We currently offer two courses: one covering PHP, JavaScript, and Drupal, and one covering Ruby, JavaScript, and Rails.
Stop in to meet our staff, see the classroom and ask lots of questions. And if you're working on the pre-class homework from learnhowtoprogram.com we can help with that!

Beaver BarCamp is an informal conference where everyone is encouraged to participate and the sessions are not predetermined. It provides a collaborative environment that promotes the sharing of ideas and projects and is a fun, free, casual event filled with discussions, demos and interaction with attendees. One of the best aspects of BarCamp is that attendees both provide the sessions and choose the schedule, allowing for greater flexibility and freedom. While many are tech oriented, we encourage any DIY, educational or interactive sessions. We invite everyone and anyone in the community and at OSU to enjoy Beaver Barcamp. Registration is appreciated. |
