Portland ReactJS meetup
Roll back
| description |
## Greetings fellow Reagents!
We are looking forward to our first official ReactJS user group. Dave and Eric from Idealist.org will be sharing some interesting stuff (details below) with us, and we're hoping to have one additional talk. Please let us know if you're interested in speaking/presenting. We'd like to have at least a few lightning talks as well.
## -- Talks --
## Notes on the Design of Components (Dave McCabe)
Dave will discuss what idealist.org has learned about designing React components, specifically techniques for promoting simplicity, reuse, statelessness, and separation of concerns, and for dealing with asynchrony.
## Isomorphic Webpack Hot Module Replacement Boilerplate (Eric O'Connell)
- Do you want to serve fully-rendered HTML from your React application?
- Do you want near-instant feedback in your browser as soon as you edit your React components?
- How about CSS?
This talk will give the starting point for a very nice dev environment using the webpack Hot Module Replacement feature. It will include a (trivial) Express app that renders the entire React component hierarchy which will then be hydrated on the client. Variations shown will include serving API requests out of the same app, and shared client/server routing.
## TBD / Lightning talks
Get in touch with us if you'd like to share your experiences!
Our first meeting will be held at Idealist.org's Portland office located at 209 SW Oak St, Portland OR 97204. Doors will be open at 6pm. Food and beverages will be provided, with vegan/GF options available. Please come at 6 to refreshed and hopefully have a few minutes to mingle so we can be ready to start promptly at 6:30pm. |

Ninja Sales Techniques
Roll back
| description |

Do you need to be more effective at doing sales?
Whether your revenue is shy of goals or doing sales creates unease for you, for many entrepreneurs, "sales" is a 4 letter word.
In my upcoming class, "Ninja Sales Techniques", I help entrepreneurs become more effective at doing sales by demystifying it, breaking it down into manageable steps, and offering techniques and tips on how non-salespeople can be successful at doing sales. At the end of the course, you'll leave with a much better understanding of sales, be able to create an effective sales plan, and increase your confidence in doing sales.
This 4-week class begins on 2/3, meets at the PCC Climb Center (by OMSI) for 2 hours each week and is part of the SBDC's Entrepreneur's Skill Series. For more information and to register please visit:
+ Click onto the "EVENTS" tab
+ Look for "Ninja Sales Techniques" under the "Business Basics" section.
If you have little or no experience in doing sales but are responsible for bringing in the revenue, then this class is for you!

Join us, 19 February, 2015 at 6:30pm!
Our Topic"I have no idea what I'm doing."
When a new technology arrives there is a period of time in which there are no experts. The technology is so fresh and new even enthusiasts don’t know what to do with it (remember when the iPad came out?) This creates a unique opportunity for people of all skill levels to to create new things with the technology and get exposure for their work.
Being an early creator on a new platform can be an exciting experience that offers the potential for substantial rewards. From software platforms like iOS and Android to content platforms like YouTube and Vimeo and even creative markets like Etsy and Shapeways. Creators in early markets have advantages that can help propel their success.
However taking on early markets comes with substantial risks and countless challenges that can test even the most seasoned veterans. How do you answer questions that Google doesn’t know the answer to? How do you design for a piece of hardware you don’t actually have? How do you make decisions when you have no idea what you’re doing and there is no one to follow?
In this talk I will explore the challenges of working on emerging technologies and platforms through a retelling my experiences working on early iPhone and iPad apps. Through these stories I will share key lessons I learned as well as specific tactics that can be applied to work of all forms.
Our Presenter, Josh MichaelsJosh Michaels is an independent app developer and software artist based in Portland, Oregon. Josh spends most of his time working on his app series “Magic Window” which brings beautiful views from around the world to the iPad, iPhone, and Mac.

Science on Tap - Cascadia Earthquake

Shaken, Not Stirred: The Coming Great Cascadia Earthquake
DATE: Tuesday, February 3, 2015
TIME: Doors at 6 p.m. event at 7 p.m.
LOCATION: Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton Street, Portland, Ore.
COST: $8 online advance tickets, $10* suggested cover at the door
FOOD & DRINK: Beer, wine, popcorn, and snacks available. You’re welcome to bring food into the theater with you.
DESCRIPTION: While we can’t predict exactly when the next Great Cascadia Earthquake will happen, we CAN forecast the probabilities from a long history of past earthquakes. The study of the geological history of the last 10,000 years of the Cascadia Subduction Zone has shown that there have been 43 great earthquakes (magnitude 8.0 or higher) along the coast of Oregon, Washington, California, and British Columbia. Some of these earthquakes were probably magnitude 9.0 or higher, and like the 2011 Japanese and 2004 Sumatran earthquakes, they probably also caused large tsunami waves that were devastating all over the Pacific. At this Science on Tap, Chris Goldfinger, PhD, professor of geology and geophysics at Oregon State University, will talk about the geology of Cascadia and his research on the recurrence interval of major earthquakes. While this research may not allow us to pinpoint a date for the next great quake, a better understanding of the geological forces at work can help us prepare.

Roll back

Did you ever think you could change the world by pursuing your dreams? But how do you get there and reach your full potential? What does education have to do with all of this? Women can transform their lives by jumping in and getting involved in their dreams. At this event, you’ll see an inspiring movie called Girl Rising.
Want to understand the basics behind all the cool gadgets we use every day? It all starts with circuits! And we’ll have a fun activity for beginners.
What is this event?
It’s a combination movie showing and hands-on activity. It’s a chance for high school girls to meet women in technology and a chance for women in technology to be inspired by high school girls!
Who's invited?
We’re excited to have an Intel WIN and ChickTech event! If you identify with any of the following, we’d love to have you:
Current and past ChickTech: High School participants
Current and past ChickTech volunteers
ChickTech supporters
Intel WIN members
Women in tech and ChickTech supporters
Why should you come?
It’s free! There will be snacks.
But seriously, this is an event to watch and reflect on women’s empowerment in tech by watching Girl Rising. We’ll also have an educational (and fun, we promise!) hands-on activity and create your very own circuit.
If you’re a ChickTech: High School participant, we’ll do our best to provide transportation to the event, free of charge.
Who’s hosting?
Intel WIN (Women in Intel Network) Oregon will be co-hosting this event with ChickTech.
Public Transportation
HF3 is a 7 minute walk from the Hawthorn Farm MAX Station on the blue line and 4 minutes from the nearest bus stops on Cornell Rd on route 48. |

TiE Oregon Pitch Club featuring Nitin Rai on Startup Cash Flow
Roll back
| description |

TiE Pitch Club is back for 2015!
Join us for a talk by Nitin Rai about Cash Flow for your startup. How can you ensure that your available capital lasts you while building up your business and your revenues, and maybe in anticipation of outside funding; and what to do once you land that outside investment?
Nitin Rai, president of TiE Oregon is a successful entrepreneur and active angel investor.
After the talk from our speaker, we will continue with pitches by you!
Any entrepreneur is invited to get up and present their pitch to the assembled group. This can be any type of pitch: an elevator pitch, a business concept pitch, a co-founder pitch, a sales pitch or an investor pitch. We will help you with timing you, being your chosen audience, and giving you feedback and input on your pitch, business and ideas.
Just like many before you, you will come away with a lot of valuable and actionable feedback!
People who do not want to pitch but are interested in finding out what Pitch Club is about, hearing new startup ideas, networking, and/or helping others are of course welcome!
TiE Members: FREE (members can also pre-register a non-member guest for $10)
Public: $25 |

### Compile-Time Annotation Processing
Runtime annotation can be slow. Learn how annotations can be used during compilation rather than runtime or just as documentation. We'll have a look at the annotation processing API [(JSR 269)](https://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=269) and look at some practical examples.

World Information Architecture Day 2015
Roll back
| description |
WORLD IA DAY - ARCHITECTING HAPPINESS THROUGH DESIGN THINKING - FREE!
Our world is increasingly made of information, yet so much of that information is not as clear or accessible as it could be to those it is intended for. Every organization out there seems to say that they want to make their users happy, but who is really delivering on those promises? Who is really architecting for happiness?
On February 21, 2015 we want to ask the world to help us uncover answers to questions we believe to be critical to the future of what Information Architecture is and how we practice it:
Can information affect happiness?
How can we best architect structures for information that promote happiness?
What work are organizations doing to bridge the gaps we face as we transition from a primarily analog to a primarily digital way of life?
What does Information Architecture actually mean?
Agenda:
9:00 - 10:00 Spencer Williams, Architect and City Planner, Futurewise
Social Architecture and City System Design: Integrated, Iterative And Intuitive Placemaking
In this talk, we'll examine why current city systems have the designs they do and what kind of information is required to plan for people. Information Architecture and Architecture itself are synonymous. What makes being in a building, a city, a community, or a body so rewarding is how that information is communicated and the response gleaned from those experiencing it. This talk covers information-as-architecture, cities that are more than a collection of just these objects (sidewalks, intersections, etc) and what we can learn about this planning process that can be applied to nearly any industry.
10:00 - 11:00 Thubten Comerford, Co-Founder of Pitchlandia, Founder & CEO of WePost Media
Optimal Sequencing - Human Interaction Design
Designing success in life and business through the strategic sequencing of interpersonal communication.
11:00 - 12:00 Jose Caballer Chief Education Officer, The Skool + Director of Digital Strategy, Blind and Chris Do Co-Founder, The Skool + CEO and Creative Director, Blind
Designing Powerful Facilitated Work Sessions
Brainstorming doesn't work. This talk is focused on how to design powerful, effective work sessions, which result in high-fidelity team interaction and create happiness for all involved. The most important takeaway will be how the design of the agenda extends beyond the work session, which will reveal techniques you can use right away. For example; shifting from follow-up design tasks to design experiments can be seen as a happier way of producing more innovative solutions. We will explain the best ways to document and track your ideas to help them become reality by engendering ownership from each team member and instill confidence across all stakeholders.
1:00-2:00 Shannon Anderson, Recruiting Director, ISITE Design
Happiness Design for Job Seekers, Employers and Clients
For the job seeker, orchestrating a job search can be just as challenging as a company's internal process design required to source and retain talent. I will be delving into both sides of the equation to uncover tools to help find the 'right fit' through the following steps: interview process design, cultural alignment, values assessment, workplace atmosphere design and motivating benefit packages. Learn about how all these processes and practices can positively shape the future vision of the company and all those employed within.
2:00-3:00 Rain Dove, Androgynous Supermodel and Public Figure, Major Model
Identity Design: Breaking The Binary Gender Code
Genderqueer Supermodel Rain Dove will help audiences become more aware of identity design through a look at binary gender identity ('he' and 'she'), its origins and why this form of social design is no longer relevant. This person will discuss implementation of a new system of gender identity, which exposes the advantages of designing one's own identity and thus engagement with the world around them
3:00-4:00 Ken Rubin,VP Culinary Training, Rouxbe Online Cooking School
Not Enough Cooks In The Kitchen: Curating Food Culture with Technology & Design
How does technology and information design around food impact how we cook and eat? In a world marked by an increasing sense of culinary culture amnesia, cooking is a lost art and many have a fragmented and distant relationship to food. So, the world needs more cooks - people who craft their world through a lens of food, cooking and eating. Cooking is not only a potent symbol of empowerment, it is among the most human of all acts that stands at the center of an opportunity for widespread social impact. An increase in cooking has innumerable positive outcomes for individuals, communities and our planet. As an example, cooking literacy is at the core of how we will solve our public health and chronic illness crisis. In designing learning technologies and educational experiences to build confidence in the kitchen, I am on a mission to (re)produce food culture through active participation and engagement with others.
4:00-5:00 Joshua Burkhow, Global Ops. Performance Management & Analytics, Nike
We Need All The Help We Can Get: Analytics For Happy People
One form of happiness is having the confidence to make fact-based decisions, but when there's so much data thrown at us, how can we make sense of it, regardless of our professional industries? Believe it or not, there is a shortage of Information Professionals and so we'll share what kind of valuable work these people do, how you can employ the best practices, even if you're a solopreneur and how best to organize data research. We'll leave you with key techniques that can be enacted before leaving this conference.
5:00-6:00 Cynthia Owens, Senior Consultant, XPlane
What the F*CK is IA?: Learn About IA Through Visual Thinking
After a day of sessions, we will discuss some key visual thinking concepts and develop a PDX-specific answer to that compelling question. Learn how visual thinking will help make the practice of developing IA delightful.
6:00-7:00 Charles Adler-KEYNOTE Designer, Co-Founder, Kickstarter
Designing for the Unknown
The design of any system is an experiment. The design thinking and execution behind Kickstarter was no different. Yet everything has been done before, so how do we cross the chasm of these two extremes? Using Kickstarter as an example, we'll look into experimentation across multiple facets of the platform, applied models from blogging, web video and audio while also pressing the envelope with regard to collective fundraising, community, and transparency. Charles will share stories from the company's genesis, design decisions met along the way, shaping Kickstarter into what it is today - the largest funding platform for creative projects.

Write The Docs PDX: Enabling Walkup Contributions to Your Project Documentation

Everett Toews, Developer Advocate at Rackspace Hosting, will share his experience using Git and Markdown to make it easier for the community to propose changes to their documentation.
Please arrive by 6pm. I want to start sort of promptly, by 6:05. (I'll be there by 5:30.)
The building entry doors will be locked at 7pm.
I'll appreciate help cleaning up, so we can depart by 8:30.
***********************************
A common complaint against many open source projects is documentation. Insufficient, incorrect, non-existent, hard to find, and difficult to update are things we typically all hear. There are a lot of different ways to tackle these problems. There's no silver bullet but one of my favorite tactics is lowering the barriers for absolutely anyone to contribute documentation.
Ideally, lowering the barriers means:
* using a common and well understood documentation markup language
* using documentation editors that are commonly available
* not requiring your contributors to install and configure tools
* providing a preview of the updates to make reviews reviews easier
Learn how Apache jclouds has enabled walkup contributions to our project documentation. We've benefited from better documentation, shorter review times, and building community through contribution. |
