PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) How to Transition into Product

    Mercy Corps

Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-how-to-transition-into-product-tickets-49222565017] is required to gain entry to this event

Very few product managers started out thinking “I want to be a product manager when I grow up.” Much more commonly they come from other disciplines, such as engineering, marketing, or customer support.

In this session, we’ll discuss how we got into product management, the successful paths we’ve seen for others and how we’ve coached others seeking to make this transition. We will also discuss some common pitfalls to avoid when moving from another discipline.

    Agenda:

    5:00 p.m. - Doors open

5:30 p.m. - Introduction, with a few words about Skyward

5:40 p.m. - Talk: How to Transition into Product

Mariah Scott, President, Skyward (a Verizon Company)

Susannah Axelrod, VP Product Management, Skyward (a Verizon Company)

    Additional speakers TBA

    Q&A:

    7:00 p.m. - Networking

    7:30 p.m. - Event ends

    Event FAQ:

Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: Yes.

Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: Yes.

Q: Will there be food and drink at this event? A: Yes.

Q: What is the parking situation? A: Mercy Corps has a small parking lot located on the Northside of the building that is free after 5:00 p.m., if spots are available. There is also plenty of street parking available and nearby paid parking lots (the least expensive all day parking is located at the Smart Park lot— 33 NW Davis Street).

Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance? A: The event will be held a few blocks from the Skyward offices at Mercy Corps, 45 SW Ankeny Street, Portland, OR 97204. Participants will enter through the main doors on Ankeny between SW Naito and 1st.

Q: Is there secured bike parking? A: No, there will not be secured bike parking at the event location.

Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Public transportation is always a great alternative. The event is near the Skidmore Max stop.

Q: Can I bring my dog? A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home.

    Purpose:

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

  • OEN's Entrepreneurial Summit: The Entrepreneurs Journey

    Mercy Corps

From tech to food and onto science, our region's entrepreneurs are developing ideas and companies that are making a difference from both an economic development standpoint and the betterment of the society we live in. The journey from an idea or concept to actually getting your company up and running is never an easy one. It's one that is filled with ups and downs, victories and defeats, but the one thing that all of these entrepreneurs share is a passion for what they are trying to build or create.

OEN's Entrepreneurial Summit is your opportunity to discover and learn about the incredible collection of entrepreneurs, across all industries that are making things happen in Oregon. These entrepreneurs all have a passion and belief in what they have built, but their journeys will both inspire and spark ideas within you. D'Wayne Edwards with Pensole Shoe Design Academy, Anna Martens with FreeRangePDX/Leatherman and Mat Ellis with Cloudability are just a few of the great speakers that are lined up for the event.

As many of these entrepreneurs will attest, they couldn't have done it on their own. To that end, after the talks have completed, OEN is hosting an"Entrepreneurs Journey" trade show. The trade show will include the organizations, accelerators, universities and government resources that provide the support, mentorship and potential funding for entrepreneurs.
