1 Million Cups - Portland Food Founders
Roll back
| description |

The 1 Million cups weekly meetings are a great opportunity for people and founders to connect.
Each week we invite a founder of a local startup or unique local business to give a short presentation. Then we follow up with a productive guided Q & A from the audience. Founders learn great insights about the businesses and the audience learns from people making great ideas happen in our exciting Portland startup scene.
During the month of January we are focussing on Female Founders. In February we bring in Foodie Founders. Stay tuned for March's theme!
No registration needed, no pretense allowed, just great coffee, conversation and connections every week. Come on by. |

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
# PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
#
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
# Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!
#
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
<em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

WIT: Opportunity Knocks! How to Get into Tech Without an Engineering Degree
Roll back
| description |
“How do we get more women in tech?”
The tech industry provides stability and great opportunities for career advancement, so it’s an important question - and one being asked around the world. Companies like Intel and eBay are answering by launching initiatives to increase the number of female engineers in their workforces. Non-profits are responding by establishing programs that teach girls to code so they can grow up to be developers. Universities are contributing to the conversation by offering scholarships to young adult females who choose to pursue degrees in Computer Science.
While there’s no argument that all these solutions are valuable and will help further the cause, what about women who want to work in tech, but aren’t interested in coding? What options do they have? In an effort to provide answers to these questions, eBay Portland will be hosting a special WIT Startup Week event focused on looking beyond engineering roles for women in tech.
Five women from the local tech community will be talking about their individual jobs and sharing their experiences as non-technical women working in an industry that is predominantly focused on technical roles. Kirsten Golden, Program Manager at PIE, will be emceeing the event.
Presenters include:
- Gina Hudson, Office Manager/Operations, eBay Portland
- Heidi Tretheway, Director of Marketing Communications, Urban Airship
- Susan Wheeler, Director of e-Discovery Services, Streamline Imaging
- Grace Andrews, Co-Founder & Business Development, GraphAlchemist
The WIT talk will conclude with a short Q&A, after which attendees are invited to stay for an hour of networking and have their resume critiqued by recruiters and HR representatives from eBay, Jama Software, Simple, Puppet Labs, Treehouse, and Tech Talent Link.
This event is free and open to the tech community as well as the general public. If you’re working in tech, interested in working tech, or simply exploring career options, please RSVP now to join us!

WIT: Opportunity Knocks! How to Get into Tech Without an Engineering Degree
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |

PDX Design Research Group

Rachel Shadoan, co-founder and research scientist at Akashic Labs, will be speaking on the use of hybridized research methods. More details coming soon. |

Join us at the next PDX Design Research Group meeting on Wednesday, January 28th, 2015!
Rachel Shadoan, CEO and research scientist at Akashic Labs will give a talk entitled “Edge Case: Adventures in Hybrid User Research.” Big Data is certainly having a moment. Proponents promise that data will serve up answers to all of our most pressing questions. But what happens when all that data leads to a dead end? Rachel will tell the story of the data dead end that put her on the path from data science to ethnography--and where that path has led since. Through a variety of case studies featuring the blending of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, Rachel will show where data shines, where qualitative research techniques are necessary, and how visualization can bridge the gap between the two.
Informal networking will be from 6:30 – 7:00, with Rachel’s talk to begin promptly at 7:00.
Please note: If you arrive after 7:00 pm, you will not be able to get into the building, so please plan to arrive at least a few minutes before then.

I'm the owner of ClearSight, a Rails + RubyMotion (iOS & Android) design/development shop in Vancouver, WA. We do a lot of RubyMotion here at ClearSight and created one of the most popular RubyMotion gems, <a href="https://github.com/clearsightstudio/ProMotion">ProMotion</a>, as well as <a href="https://github.com/motion-kit/motion-kit/">MotionKit</a> and several other iOS-specific open source gems. At brightnight, we will start with a challenge, break into small groups, then create and code our ideas into existence! We will take the last 30 or so minutes of the night to show and tell. All skill levels are welcome. We'll code in Ruby but those who know other languages are welcome as well.
Come join us to enjoy some creative coding time where we all can learn from each other, try out wacky ideas and cultivate our skills in a fun, low-pressure environment.
New Relic is generously hosting this new event and providing food and refreshments.

Check in at the security desk to get access to the 29th floor. This usually isn't required for official events and meetups.
