PDX Django February Meeting
Roll back
description |

Despite missing December and January, February's PDX Django meeting looks like a great one. We have one short and one medium talk scheduled -- if you'd like to do a 5 minute or so talk on a tool, problem, or feature, why not let us know?
It's also the day before PyCon starts, so we might just chat about what looks interesting there.
The talks:
- Dermot Maty on a problem he had with Proxy Models, and how he solved it
- Michael Richardson will be previewing a talk he's giving at DjangoSki. Here's the summary from their talks page:
"Michael is a cofounder at Urban Airship where he spends his day working on a RESTful API to deliver notifications and in-app content to mobile devices. His talk, "RESTful APIs with Django and Piston," pulls from Urban Airship's experience and goes through creating an API in Django with Piston along with pitfalls you may experience along the way.
Michael was also the developer behind the massive Django-powered meat conglomerate bacn.com until it was sold earlier this year. Bac'n did not, sadly, have an API."
The meeting will be at 7pm at PIE, 1227 NW Davis St (directly opposite the North Face store -- look for the big brown armchairs in the window. |

Rose City Software Process Improvement (SPIN) Seminar [free event, open to public]
Title: Moving to Agile Development: What Went Right, What Went Wrong
Presenter: Ray Arell
Dates/Times: Thursday, February 11th, 2010; Networking @ 6:00 PM; Seminar 7:00-8:00 PM
Location: Hillsboro Main Library, Main Library Meeting Room, 2850 NE Brookwood Parkway, Hillsboro, OR 97124
Abstract:
A while ago I went into my software staff and declared “Hey! We are going Agile!” Yep, I read an Agile project management book on a long flight to India, and like all good reactionary development managers I was sold! A few years later our adaptation of the Scrum framework has taken shape, but it was not without strain on our development, test, and other Q/A processes. This session focuses on a retrospective of what went right and more importantly what went wrong as we evolved to our new development process and the effect it had on our team. Perhaps it will convince you that the shift to Agile is the way to go, and hopefully give you just a little more info on what you may be in for.
Speaker Bio:
Ray Arell is a Senior Engineering Manager and Agilist at Intel. He has over 21 years of hardware and software development, validation, and management experience. During his tenure, he has worked on a variety of teams focused on CPU, chipsets, and graphics system-level testing. Today he manages an Agile software engineering team in Intel's Business Client Platform Division and he is a leading force in the Agilization of Intel. Ray is also co-author of Change-Based Test Management: Improving the Software Validation Process (ISBN: 0971786127), and has delivered keynotes at StarWest/EuroStar, STANZ 2008 Wellington/Sydney, QA&Test 2005/6 Bilbao, and speaker at many other events worldwide.
A Special Treat from PNSQC:
Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza provided by PNSQC beginning at 6:00 pm.
PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality. The Mission of the PNSQC is to enable knowledge exchange to produce higher quality software. As a non-profit, it seeks to promote software quality by providing education and opportunities for information exchange within the software community. Visit www.pnsqc.org for details.
About Rose City SPIN:
The Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) is a monthly forum for networking, mutual support, and promotion of effective software practices. We exchange practical experiences, ideas, knowledge, wisdom, and war stories about the technical, business, and human facets of software process improvement. The Rose City SPIN serves the software development community of the Portland/Vancouver metro area. Whether you work for a large company or a small one, corporate or self-employed, industrial or academic setting, you are welcome at the Rose City SPIN.

PRESENTATION
A Talk
by
Jeri Ellsworth
(Circuit Girl)
Jeri Ellsworth is a native Oregonian, born in Yamhill and raised
in Dallas, Oregon. Early on she became fascinated with electronics
and 8-bit computers setting the stage for her unique approach to
learning. Not being challenged in school, she skipped higher
education to pursue a career in car-racing and chassis fabrication.
After that, she opened a chain of computer stores in Oregon and
Washington. She sold those to persue a career in chip design,
which lead her to design the CommodoreOne - based upon the
Commodore 64 - using reconfigurable logic and the C64 DTV 30-
games-in-one joystick, selling, a quarter million units.
She currently works as an Oregon based consultant.
I'm not sure what Jeri is going to speak about yet, but judging from
the talk she gave at Sanford, it should be very good indeed.
See a video of her Sanford talk at:

OEN Workshop: Valuing Your Company
Roll back

Join OEN and speaker Naomi Derner for an OEN Workshop Thursday, March 4th from 4:00-6:00 P.M.
As an early stage entrepreneur looking for the first round of funding, one of the most daunting tasks may be determining the valuation of your company. In this workshop, we will cover the basics of valuing a seed or launch stage company, and answer some questions, such as:
* Who sets the valuation - the company or the investor?
* What does pre-money and post-money valuation mean? How do I calculate it?
* How do I value my company if we don’t yet have revenues?
* How do investors determine the valuation?
* How have valuations changed in the economic downturn?
We'll explain the terminology, demystify the math and explain some of the ways that valuation is set during the funding process. There will be plenty of time for Q&A, so come armed with your questions and be ready to participate in a lively discussion about valuing early stage companies.
To sign up for this workshop, or for more information visit http://www.oen.org/events.aspx?id=133 |
