PDXScala Meeting
Roll back
description |
Come join other Scala enthusiasts at our new location graciously hosted by Jive Software. Anything Scala related is open for discussion. We'll have Jesse Hallett discussing how he put together a lambda calculus to learn about Scala's parsing libraries. Leif Warner will also be showing an application he's been developing which uses the Step web framework (a workalike of the the Sinatra framework
in Ruby). This app uses Simple Build Tool, RDF/OWL, graphs and federated queues and is intended to provide an "open source community family tree" of the local Portland-area music scene.
If you have a project or some code you'd like to share (for review or just to look
at how you solved an interesting problem) please bring it along. Pizza
will be provided by Jive. |

TiE Oregon: Energy Storage for the Smart Grid
Roll back
description |
Energy storage is increasingly perceived as a necessary and vital component of any future smart grid, yet meaningful energy storage is still a scarce and missing component.
Why is energy storage so important?
- Energy storage helps solve the variability issues with renewable energy (solar and wind) generation, and as such will help balance the grid
- Distributed energy storage located near the point of use will provide localized power, thereby decreasing the need to build new power plants and additional transmission lines.
- Energy storage has been proclaimed by some as a "killer app" by utilizing batteries in parked electric vehicle (EV) fleets to feed stored energy back to the grid. Such Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) applications have promise to feed energy back to the grid for special purposes to benefit both the utility and the electric car owner.
- Significant utility-scale storage capacity solves an even bigger issue, capturing and utilizing the massive amounts of electrical generating capacity that is otherwise typically unused.
The discussion will focus on:
- Value chain elements of the energy storage industry
- Who are local champions of energy storage
- What are the interests of the investment community
- What does the policy and regulatory framework look like
- How do customers value energy storage
- How is the smart grid expected to interact with energy storage
Join our panel on April 21st, to understand the technologies, trade-offs, market segments, future potential of energy storage.
Our 3 panelists are:
- Dylan Steeg, Director Intel Capital, Intel's global venture capital organization. Dylan is responsible for several cleantech and semiconductor sectors, including photovoltaics, smart grid/demand response, datacenter energy efficiency, and semiconductor manufacturing
- Dan Nicollet, Co-founder, Supercritical Energy, a pioneer of Supercritical Fluid Technology applied to distributed energy generation and storage on the electric grid
- Marcus Wood , Partner and Chair of the Energy and Telecommunications (ENTEL) practice group Stoel Rives, . He focuses his practice on energy provider and energy facility developer clients.
The panel will be moderated by John Thornton, Founder, Clean Future, a consulting firm providing business and technical expertise at the convergence of energy, mobility, sustainability and the Smart Grid.

This month's topic: TBD
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, the Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=24 ).

This month's topic: WebSockets
WebSockets is an exciting new technology that enables bidirectional communication between web applications and server-side processes. Google's Chrome browser already provides WebSockets and developers can expect to see the technology in other browsers in 2010. This presentation will cover the WebSocket protocol and JavaScript API. We'll also discuss Jetty's WebSocketServlet API and demonstrate how to use WebSockets in a GWT application.

EPISODE #8!
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to the 3rd weekly PDX TechCoffee. One commit a week is all we ask.
NOTE: We've had some wifi problems in the past, so i recommend having what you need to work locally on your laptop before you come by. |

Taxonomies Are a Wonderful Thing, with Michael Fields |
→ |
Please join us this Thursday at Webtrends where <a href="http://mfields.org/">Michael Fields</a> will be speaking on the topic of Custom Taxonomies for your WordPress powered website. The purpose of the presentation is two-fold: to inform WordPress users that this functionality exists and inspire them to use custom taxonomies on their own sites by providing a series of use cases.
Please bear in mind that there will be absolutely no code to learn. All examples can be reproduced by a beginner with the aid of freely available, open-source plugins. |

Join us (Barbara Holmes and Jeanne Turner) your fearless IxDA co-leaders as we guest lecture for the Art Institute!
We’re taking on equally fearless information design students and discussing a few aspects about how your brain works, and how we as designers toy with how your brain works. Specifically and scientifically, Barbara will cover the principles behind short-term memory processing and cognitive load. Jeanne will then flip the rules on their ass as she shares how these same principles are harnessed to provide whimsy and delight in the best iPhone and iPad apps. Join us for a fun, interactive session. And be prepared to share your insights with students eager to hear from working pros like you.
When: Tuesday, November 16th
Time: 6 pm – 10 pm (thereabouts)
Where: Portland Art Institute in the Culinary Arts building
722 Northwest Couch Street, Portland, OR -
Room number is CUL302
Please be prompt. The doors to this building are locked and entry is controlled. Because this is a class, we need to start on time to respect the student’s time and investment. Unlike typical IxDA meetups, we cannot handle refreshments in this venue. We don’t know the room capacity, so be patient if it’s crowded.
Here’s the timeline we’re aiming for:
6 – 7 Barbara
7 – 8 Jeanne
8 Q&A and discussion
8:30 adjourn (to a local restaurant/bar tbd) for further discussion.
Hope you can join us!
Barbara Holmes and Jeanne Turner
Co-Leaders, IxDA Portland

Join us for our monthly IxDA Portland meetup. Co-Leader Barbara Holmes will lead an exercise called the Customer Journey, a technique for doing user research.
As IxD practitioners we’re pretty familiar with user research techniques like personas and scenarios. How do you take this research and bring it to life for stakeholders at the business unit level or higher? One technique is the customer journey. This month, we’ll explore customer journeys as a way to illustrate user research and align it with client’s business and marketing goals. We’ll practice creating one by taking a look at a journey we’ve all made; deciding to be involved in the IxD profession.
Barbara Holmes, User Experience Architect at ISITE Design and co-leader of the Portland IxDA chapter, will lead the discussion about customer journeys. She and Jeanne will then facilitate the activity, and follow-up discussion.
In the activity, we’ll work individually to draw our own journey to the IxD profession. Where did you start? What drew you to the practice? What learning/training did you engage with? What are you doing now? After individual work, we’ll break into small groups where you’ll share your journeys with each other. The goal is to find common threads or patterns. Finally, you’ll present those commonalities and patterns to the group in a small group presentation.
Anyone and everyone is welcome, designers and non-designers alike.
