You can talk about your challenges, work through problems, and discuss your code an mob program together.</i> </p> <p>Led by Kang-Kyu and/or Jen Diamond. <br>____________________________________________________</p> <p><i>The Parallel Project will be continuing on another night to be determined soon.</i></p> <p><i>***The Parallel Project*** Currently we are building an ecommerce WebApp from scratch, step-by-step. We are not using a tutorial. We are diving into each piece as we need it in an Agile fashion. We are building our first WebApp as a team -- working individually, all in parallel. </i></p> <p><i>Each week we discuss the step we have just taken and decide what to do next. This way we can be sure that everyone is on the same page, that we are really learning what we have set out to learn and that newcomers can catch up with us.</i></p> <p><i>As a group, we are designing a WebApp which we each individually build on our local machines. Each week we will decide on an incremental step, have the week to build it on our own, share our progress, and then we come together to discuss how we accomplished our task. This way, we each have the hands-on experience of building each piece of a WebApp. We ask questions of others who are building the same thing, learn from each others' methods, and discuss how we accomplished our goals.</i></p> <p><i>=======================================</i></p> <p><i>This is the **SAME Meetup**</i> as: <br> • Los Angeles Women's Ruby on Rails Group:<a href="http://www.meetup.com/Los-Angeles-Womens-Ruby-on-Rails-Group/"> <br>www.meetup.com/Los-Angeles-Womens-Ruby-on-Rails-Group/</a>*<i>Women and men*</i> please all attend! <br> • The LA Ruby, East-Side Study Group: <br> <a href="http://www.meetup.com/laruby/events/221924014/">www.meetup.com/laruby/events/[masked]/</a></p> <p><i>Please be kind, considerate and respectful. We are here to study together, and encourage a learning environment conducive to all learning types, experience levels, and ages.</i></p> <p><i>If you are brand new to Ruby on Rails, don't feel intimidated, everyone has to start somewhere. We will help you get up to speed if you are willing to put in the time. There are a lot of great tutorials to get you up and rolling even if you've never programmed before. Our current project assumes some MVC / Rails background, but we have successfully brought people up to speed to join the group. </i></p> <p><i>For Beginners:</i> We love having beginners join us! Please attend to get a sense of our group, and we will have a set of tutorial waiting for you, to bring you up to speed to join our project. MANY of our group-members started with RailsLearners knowing nothing, and are now developing along with the team.</p> <p><i>=======================================</i></p> <p><i>Our Meetup consists of 3 associated Meetup Groups:</i></p> <p><i>Rails Learners (our primary group): Working on The Parallel Project, meets weekly.</i></p> <p><i>Rails Learners Lab: A bi-weekly “lab” to complement Rails Learner. <br> • Come when you are stuck on your weekly assignment</i></p> <p><i>WebApp-Builders: A full-stack focused Meetup group, designed for more advanced WebApp developers.<a href="http://www.meetup.com/WebApp-Builders"></a><a href="http://www.meetup.com/WebApp-Builders" class="linkified">http://www.meetup.com/WebApp-Builders</a></i></p> <p><i>=======================================</i></p> <p><i>Organizers:</i></p> <p><i>Jen Diamond thejendiamond @ gmail[masked]</i></p> <p><i>Kobi Levy [masked][masked]</i></p> <p><i>KangKyu Lee [masked]</i></p> <p><i>Kalisa Falzone</i></p> <p><i>=======================================</i></p> <p><i>* Please come to learn. #How MarketingOps Is Like DevOps
**› Please RSVP via Eventbrite [HERE](http://bit.ly/1PZfkIR)**
Software is consuming the world! Today, Modern Marketers rely on an 'Engineering' mindset to work creatively, and treat Marketing Operations like DevOps. This presentation will discuss how MarkOps and DevOps are charged to solve similar problems, along with the shared guiding principles that currently exist to help solve them.
*Isaac is a tech-nerd who loves to makes people's jobs easier using tech and automation. As Director of Marketing Ops at New Relic, I optimize the entire value-chain by aligning people, their activities, the technologies and processes they use to achieve goals, in an efficient and scalable way. Automating where possible, enable where necessary. Previous to New Relic, Isaac was a part of other high growth companies like Blue Jeans Network and Citrix.*
**› Doors will open at 5:30 for a 30-minute networking happy half-hour! The food, beer and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic. The presentation will begin right at 6p.**
› Stay tuned for the latest developments and updates on this and upcoming events by joining our Meetup group, [New Relic FutureTalks PDX](http://www.meetup.com/New-Relic-FutureTalks-PDX/), and following us on Twitter @newrelic.
› FutureTalk is brought to you by **New Relic** in collaboration with **[TAO](http://www.techoregon.org)** |

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting

We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
# PRESENTATIONS at 7pm

#
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
# Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!
#
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
<em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers!
We are starting a new book [Clean Ruby](http://clean-ruby.com/) by Jim Gay. We will be discussing chapters ('Being and Doing' to 'Crossing the Use Chasm')
Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it.
Pizza will be provided!
##Book Summary
* Learn to think about thinking. At the basis of every program lies a human being's mental model. Creating a program which accurately reflects a shared mental model is crucial to building habitable and maintainable systems.
* East-oriented code. Learn how to better understand encapsulation and create code which enforces that the right objects have the right responsibilities.
* Data, Context, and Interaction (DCI). Discover ways to flatten your object structure and create highly cohesive groups of objects that keep related things together, right where you need them.

Portland JavaScript Admirers' Lightning Talks

<p>This month we are having lightning talks! Everyone is encouraged to give a talk - especially if you have not given a talk before. This is a chance to practice giving a presentation without having to worry about filling up a lot of time, and in front of an understanding audience (because everyone else will also be concerned about how well their talk will go :)).</p> <p>Lightning talks are five minutes or less. They can be on any topic that you like. Remember that five minutes go by fast, so try to keep your presentation simple. If you want to use slides, try to stick to ten or fewer screens - and fewer is better. For some advice, see:<br><a href="http://software.ac.uk/home/cw11/giving-good-lightning-talk"></a><a href="http://software.ac.uk/home/cw11/giving-good-lightning-talk" class="linkified">http://software.ac.uk/home/cw11/giving-good-lightning-talk</a></p> <p>If you are willing to give a talk, please sign up on the <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1urv1vgbSXu2MG9_7ZDq4eC5lo3tnV7KGll7eLCYhLM8/edit?usp=sharing">signup sheet</a>.</p> <p>You can give a talk even if you do not sign up in advance - but people who do sign up will get priority in case we run short on time.</p> <p>If you have slides, it would be very helpful if you can post a link in the signup sheet or send them to me, so that we can queue up everyone's presentations on one computer. But feel free to sign up first, and add the link to your slides later when they are ready.</p> <p><br>Feel free to join our mailing list at <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs"></a><a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs" class="linkified">http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs</a> if you too are a JavaScript admirer. Or visit our web site for more information at <a href="http://pdxjs.com/"></a><a href="http://pdxjs.com/" class="linkified">http://pdxjs.com/</a>.</p> <p>If you're interested in making a presentation at a future meet-up, please e-mail <a>Jesse Hallett </a>.</p> |
