update Calagator::Event 1250469602 PDX Design Research Group Roll back

description Designing for Connections Dwayne King, Pinpoint Humans have a deep-seated evolutionary drive to congregate and organize themselves into communities. Modern-day communities provide protection, commerce and connection. Social resources like trust and shared identity make it easier for people to work and play together, creating a more productive and prosperous society. Productivity and prosperity are normally measured in objects and people, but these resources also reside in social relations among people. This extends the idea of capital beyond physical, financial and human to include social capital. Social capital provides a framework to make deliberate investments to develop resources that inhere in social relations. Research shows that increased social capital improves health, safety, education, government and the economy. In this presentation, Dwayne King will give an overview of the Connection Experience Design (CxD) process, explaining how it draws from techniques successfully used in other disciplines. He’ll explore what he considers its core principles: co-design, systems thinking, prototyping, and habitat, and explain how its research and testing methods differ from those of UxD. Please join us for what promises to be an enlightening and entertaining evening! About the Speaker Dwayne King is the President of Pinpoint, a design strategy agency located in Portland, OR. Event Info Date: Wednesday, January 20th, 2016 Time: Informal networking is from 6:30 – 7:00, with Dwayne’s talk to begin promptly at 7:00 Please note: If you arrive after 7:00 pm, you will not be able to get into the building. Please plan to arrive at least a few minutes before then, as there won't be anyone downstairs to let you in. Special thanks to eBay and Tami Wood for hosting this event! About This Organization... The PDX Design Research Group is a multidisciplinary networking group focused on the role of research in the design of products, services and systems in business, government and non-profits. We welcome perspectives from all disciplines, including human-computer interaction, design, market research, and the social sciences, and others. venue_details nil ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.

update Calagator::Event 1250469572 Portland Startup Week: FailPDX Roll back

description ![](http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/5/7/c/global_444178748.jpeg) ###FailPDX back in action! FailPDX will be kicking off the new year with a 4 person panel discussing the trials and tribulations of building a successful business. Each panel member will share their personal failures, what they learned from the experience, and answer any questions we may have. This FailPDX event is officially part of Portland Startup Week. Startup Week is a free, five-day celebration of our community that builds momentum and opportunity around entrepreneurship. The week is led by local entrepreneurs and hosted in amazing spaces all over town. For those who may not be familiar with our group: FailPDX was created out of direct response to a lot of the meetups and conferences that seemed to be focused on all of the good things about being part of startup and taking chances. The truth is, success is a unicorn. FailPDX was created to remind people that failure is inevitable. This group is a place where everyone can come together to listen and share their failure stories. If you are interested in speaking at or sponsoring one of our events, please email [email protected]. ###Schedule: 5:00 PM: Refreshments & Networking
5:30 PM: Presentation followed by Q/A
6:30 PM: Wrap things up
*Please note the above schedule is subject to change and will include our panelist closer to event time.* Look forward to seeing everyone! ![](http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/5/7/c/global_444178748.jpeg) ###FailPDX back in action! *Please RSVP at http://goo.gl/wocFa4 so we have an accurate head count.* FailPDX will be kicking off the new year with a 4 person panel discussing the trials and tribulations of building a successful business. update Calagator::Event 1250469452 Portland Linux/Unix Group: Rust Roll back

description Who: Jim Blandy
What: Rust
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)
When: Thursday, January 7th, 2016 at 7pm
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live Rust is meant to compete with C and C++ in performance, but also provide memory safety. Someone has written a small kernel in Rust. Rust is only attractive to JavaScript / Python types when they run into a problem where memory consumption or processor consumption is a real limiting factor. Then, it's much easier for them to transition into Rust than C/C++, but Rust gives them the performance they need. Some Rust killer apps: - Mozilla's experimental browser engine, Servo (which outperforms Firefox on a single core, and destroys it when running on four cores); - Tilde's Skylight profiling system for Rails apps, which uses Rust to handle the voluminous data produced by running apps: http://www.tilde.io/skylight/ - OpenDNS, which is again using Rust to handle large amounts of data in real time: https://labs.opendns.com/2013/10/04/zeromq-helping-us-block-malicious-domains/ Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting. Rideshares Available PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings. But writing concurrent code in C and C++ is challenging even for experienced developers: data races are notoriously difficult to debug, and concurrency makes ordinary memory bugs harder to reproduce. So programmers usually turn to concurrency as a last resort, only after they’ve squeezed as much performance out of their single-threaded code as possible. But what if concurrency were practical as a method of “first resort?” What if we could design ordinary programs around the opportunities for parallelism they present, without introducing risk and making our code hard to maintain for all but the wizards? Rust is a new systems programming language from Mozilla, designed for memory safety and trustworthy concurrency. Rust catches data races and memory errors at compile time: you can’t forget to lock the right mutex before accessing shared data, nor can you modify a data structure after handing it off to another thread, nor can you free data that another thread was using, and so on. Rust does not use garbage collection, but instead relies on a simple set of rules for ownership, moving, and borrowing to prevent the kinds of memory errors that plague concurrent C and C++ code. Mozilla has used Rust to implement an experimental browser engine named Servo, which already outperforms Firefox’s Gecko engine on real-world web sites. This talk will demonstrate various styles of concurrent code in Rust: message passing, shared data protected by mutexes, and lock-free algorithms using atomic memory operations. We’ll show how Rust’s ownership rules, unique among production programming languages, prevent data races. And we’ll show how to take responsibility for correctness yourself when the compiler is too strict, using Rust’s ‘unsafe’ mode. Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting. Rideshares Available PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings.
