PDXCloud - AWS re:Invent review
Roll back
| description |
We've got a special guest from Amazon Web Services who is going to give us a rundown of all the products and features that were announced two weeks ago at AWS re:Invent. And there were a lot! Undoubtedly, we'll want to dive deeper into some of these topics, so bring your questions. Since we'll have much to talk about, we're going to limit this meeting to a single presenter.
Our presenter: Khawaja Shams is the Head of Engineering for NoSQL at Amazon Web Services. He is a passionate distributed systems engineer, loves to code, and all it takes to distract him is a refreshing discussion around coding a new distributed systems app. Prior to joining Amazon, Khawaja led the Data Services team at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he owned distributed systems for tactical operations of dozens of missions across NASA including the Curiosity Mars rover, Voyager, Deep Space Network, Cassini, and International Space Station. Khawaja owned development of the data processing pipelines for all Mars images as they are beamed back to earth and pushed out to global community of scientist, operators, as well as the public. @ksshams

eBay Tech Tuesdays: "Music + Tech + Accessibility = Love"
Roll back
| description |
October's Tech Tuesday will be incorporating three of our favorite things: music, tech, and accessibility, into one evening – and we are so excited.
We recently had the pleasure of being introduced to Myles de Bastion, Founder and Executive Director of CymaSpace. He is awesome, as is the work he and his team are doing at CymaSpace.
CymaSpace is a non-profit technology incubator and performance venue in SE Portland that’s using cymatic technology to do some very cool stuff with the performing arts and accessibility.
Cymatics is the science of wave phenomena (especially sound wave phenomena) and their visual and tactile representations.
http://www.cymaspace.org/
CymaSpace’s mission is to make the performing arts more accessible and inclusive to Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities by supporting research and development of new and emerging cymatic technology, hosting workshops and forums, and supporting an in-house team of tech innovators.
CymaSpace also presents live performing arts events enhanced by specialized equipment and installations which translate audio information into sight (light) and touch (vibration).
We found Myles to be incredibly inspiring and motivational, and was absolutely thrilled when he agreed to participate in this month’s Meetup. He’ll be sharing his personal experience with hearing impairment, the motivations and passions behind CymaSpace, and the technologies (both software and hardware) being developed there.
We will also be bringing in performers for music and a live demo of some of CymaSpace’s work. (More to be announced on this as we get closer to the date.)
As a note, we’ll have ASL interpreters for Myles’ presentation, and are working to make the performance aspect of the evening accessible as well. Fingers are crossed that will happen!
As usual, doors open at 5:45pm and the presentation starts at 6:30pm. I expect this one will run a little longer than usual, though, ending closer to 8:30pm.
RSVP now and we'll see you on the 27th!
Pizza and sodas will be in effect as well, as always. |

There will be demos of CymaSpace’s hardware and software technologies during Myles’ presentation. The demos will include an acoustic singer/songwriter performing original songs, accompanied by a Certified Deaf Interpreter performing interpretive ASL, and a musical duo playing various instruments to demonstrate a full range of sonic frequencies translated into light.
If we’re lucky, there will be some other cool demo surprises as well.
This event is all-ages and with ASL interpreters for both the verbal presentation and demos, it is designed to be fully accessible to the Deaf community. As always, our Meetup is open to the public, so please spread the word.
As usual, doors open at 5:45pm and the presentation starts at 6:30pm. We expect this one will run a little longer than usual, though, ending closer to 8:15ish.

Ruby Book Club
Roll back
| description |
Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers!
We are starting a new book [Clean Ruby](http://clean-ruby.com/) by Jim Gay. We will be discussing chapters 1-3.
Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it.
Pizza will be provided!
##Book Summary
* Learn to think about thinking. At the basis of every program lies a human being's mental model. Creating a program which accurately reflects a shared mental model is crucial to building habitable and maintainable systems.
* East-oriented code. Learn how to better understand encapsulation and create code which enforces that the right objects have the right responsibilities.
* Data, Context, and Interaction (DCI). Discover ways to flatten your object structure and create highly cohesive groups of objects that keep related things together, right where you need them.

No Safe Harbor for Transatlantic Data Transfers – Guidance for US and Global Businesses
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The European Court of Justice has ruled that the US-EU Safe Harbor Framework for cross-border data transfers is inadequate. What are the implications for US companies who do business with individuals and entities in the EU, transact business in the cloud, or handle consumer data that crosses borders? How will this affect your company’s privacy policy and contractual relationships with customers and vendors? What are best practices for moving forward with model contract provisions, binding corporate rules, and/or reliance on derogations?
Speaker:
Dr. Dennis Voigt is a partner at Melchers, a German law firm with offices in Berlin, Frankfurt and Heidelberg. Dennis’s practice focuses on data protection, marketing, advertisement, distribution, and IT matters. His clients are software suppliers and software distributors, advertisement agencies, online-service providers, and insurers. In data protection matters, Dennis has been advising clients for more than a decade with a particular focus on the design and use of large databases, either for HR-administration or marketing purposes.

[Hobson Lane](https://www.linkedin.com/in/hobsonlane) will be doing a case study on recent work done on [Hack Oregon](http://www.hackoregon.org/)'s Behind the Curtain project.
He'll walk through several things:
- Using python sets and pandas to find relationships between database tables, between politicians and the Ashley Madison dump, and between political action committees that you'd never imagine would support each other.
- Using sklearn and TFIDF to compare committee descriptions.
- Using d3 force-directed graphs to do interactive visualization and clustering on that network of connections.
Another joint meetup with the [Portland Data Science Group](http://www.meetup.com/Portland-Data-Science-Group/). |

DORKBOTPDX October 2015 Workshop: Create a Teensy MIDI Device
Roll back
| description |

→ |
This is the first of three audio workshops coming up, exciting!
The Build Your Own Teensy MIDI Encoder Workshop will show you how to use a Teensy 3.1 to create a MIDI encoder that sends MIDI OUT messages over the Teensy's micro-B USB plug.
During the workshop, you will build a serial-to-parallel, parallel-to-serial switch matrix using a Teensy 3.1, a breadboard, IN4148 diodes, and reed switches (if you wish to validate the switch matrix). Darin will demonstrate how to write the switch matrix scan code and how to encode the simulated keypress signals into MIDI OUT messages using the Arduino/Teensy Keypad and MIDI libraries. Extending the code to accommodate MIDI IN, velocity sensitivity and other MIDI messages, as well as using shift registers (74HC595 and 74HC165), will be discussed.
Recommended hardware and software for the workshop:
Teensy 3.1 or 3.2 with header pins
Micro-B USB cable
Breadboard with jumpers
1N4148 diodes
Reed switches and magnets (optional)
Laptop loaded with:
Arduino/Teensyduino IDE or Microsoft Visual Studio using Visual Micro
MIDI-Ox, (PureData can also be used to dump MIDI messages)
We will have some extra supplies available.
Instructor: Darin Molnar

<p>Our first Emacs Hangout will have the following agenda:</p> <p>• <b>Main Talk. </b>Overview of Magit, a Git Porcelain for Emacs presented by Will Clifford and Howard Abrams. This will be around 15 minutes, so it won't answer all your questions, but should get you started.</p> <p><br>• <b>Lightning Talks</b>. Have something to share? Great! Each lightning talk with be around 5 minutes to show off something cool your learned, so come prepared! We don't know how many of these we'll have, but we're flexible.</p> <p><br>• <b>Office Hours</b>. We'll have a white board where you can write down issues you want to resolve or projects you are working on, and others will come and work with you to solve them.</p> <p>We may tweak this format in the future, but this is our plan. We'll publish notes about this meeting at <a href="https://github.com/howardabrams/pdx-emacs-hackers">our Github repository</a>.</p> <p>Couple of notes about this meeting:</p> <p><br>1. Enter on SW 2nd. Arrive by Max? Walk around the building.</p> <p>2. Doors lock at 7, so people arriving after 7 will need to call the note on the door to let them in.<br>3. We will finish office hours at 8, and then continue at a local pub.</p> <p><b>Note:</b> Our monthly hangouts will be the third Wednesday of each month...however, we may alter this pattern for November and December.</p> |
