Join us at the next PDX Design Research Group meeting on Wednesday, September 16th, 2015!
<b>Teach a Grandmother, Change the World (R&D for Illiterate Populations)</b>, presented by Elena Moon and Jos Vaught, Osage Orange
<i>How do you design a tablet app for poor, rural users who have never handled a digital device? What do you do when they speak no common language, and lack the ability to read in their own?</i>
Last year Elena and Jos traveled to Rajasthan, India, to learn from an international group of grandmothers who were learning to become solar engineers, despite a lack of literacy. Each had traveled from a different part of the world to participate in the 6-month Solar Grandmother program, hosted by India’s Barefoot College, a 40-year-old grassroots institution dedicated to helping marginalized people build skills that bring solutions. After graduation, these women would bring light back to their villages -- light that means night classes for children, reduced danger from assault and rape, and less need for kerosene lanterns, improving the local air quality. In many cases, these Solar Grandmothers become respected leaders, presenting a model for women’s empowerment to the rest of their community.
This project focused on the challenges graduates faced upon returning to their villages. Since the necessary solar equipment can take months to arrive, graduates can struggle to maintain the skills they learned, often with little initial support from their communities. Osage Orange wanted to learn whether a digital tablet could help ease the transition, by extending and maintaining the skills learned during training. Over the course of three weeks, Osage Orange led a team of designers in interviewing and observing 60 Solar Grandmothers and their Barefoot teachers, both in class and back in their villages. Elena and Jos will walk us through that process, and share what they found.
<i>Osage Orange, a human-centered design boutique based in Portland, Oregon, works with a variety of clients, from fortune 50s to startups, helping businesses research, conceptualize, and design elegant, compelling products. They work on complex problems across many industries, whether it’s an education platform for illiterate, rural poor communities, or a spaceship interface for NASA astronauts. Increasingly, their work focuses on projects which promote positive social and environmental outcomes.,</i>
<i>Elena Moon is a User Experience Consultant and the founder of Osage Orange. She has been doing a mix of research and design for the last 15 years and particularly enjoys socially and environmentally conscious projects. Her work has supported community agriculture, open source education, home energy conservation, and the deaf-blind community. She was a recipient of the Thomas J. Watson fellowship to conduct anthropology work with indigenous peoples in Australia and Papua New Guinea and has been involved with Portland's Interaction Design Association for many years, leading it from 2012-2014.</i>
<i>Jos Vaught is the lead User Experience Designer of Osage Orange. He has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s in Applied Linguistics. From 2012-2014 he served as a co-organizer for Portland’s Interactive Design Association.</i>
Date: Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 Time: Networking 6:30 – 7:00 pm, presentation 7:00 – 8:00 pm Location: Connective DX

Presentation Information
Host Card Emulation for NFC Mobile Payment in the Cloud
Presented by: Karl J. Weaver, Newport Technologies
Security on HCE NFC Mobile Payment smartphones has been an issue and with the use of tokenization, these issues have been minimized, although further debate and apparent limitations remain. Also some believe the TEE or even eSE could play a role in security of HCE NFC along with biometric “Touch ID” authentication. A secure payment system requires a holistic approach encompassing end-to-end encryption, tokenization and compliance with both existing and emerging standards, including PCI and EMV. The key is use of NFC SIM cards and HCE are not mutually exclusive, and you’ll see hybrid designed NFC Payment smartphones emerge. Karl will explore exactly what Host Card Emulation is, where it came from, also a discussion on Apple and Android “Pay” developments, including Samsung and Softcard.
Karl J. Weaver is an OEM/ODM mobile device ecosystem and business development executive/rainmaker for Near Field Communications, mobile (wallet) payments and TEE embedded mobile device security ecosystems. He is a globally-trained, bilingual Mandarin Chinese speaking senior mobility executive with vast experience selling wireless & mobile device technologies from both sides of the Pacific Rim to the global OEM/ODM handset/tablet PC ecosystem supply chain. He recently spent 5 years working in China for Gemalto as Rainmaker for design in of embedded Mobile NFC Payments & TEE security technologies to the OEM Smartphone/Tablet PC ecosystem.

eBay Tech Tuesdays: "To Sell or Not to Sell? That is the Question."
Roll back
description |

→ |
Happy September!
This month's Tech Tuesday is just a few weeks away, and we're shifting gears a bit and bringing the focus back around to the entrepreneur.
During the course of starting, running, and growing a business, almost every founder will ask themselves at least once, but more likely numerous times, “Should I sell?” And then they will go back and forth tossing around all the reasons why or why not, usually losing a lot of sleep and sanity in the process.
For September's Tech Tuesday we've put together a panel of local founders who answered that hard question. You'll hear about why they chose to sell or not, if they’d make the same decision if given the opportunity again, if they'd do anything differently next time, and more.
Panelists
· James Keller, former co-founder of Small Society which was purchased by Walmart Labs in 2011
· Josh Reich, CEO & co-founder Simple, which was purchased by BBVA in 2014
· TBA pending confirmation
Moderator: Sara Morrow, Talent Partner, ebay Marketplaces
Not only do I expect this will be a very interesting – and entertaining - evening of insights, experiences, and shoulda/coulda/wouldas... but what you learn might help you stay a little more sane and rested when it comes time to ask yourself, "To sell or not sell?"
RSVP here: http://bit.ly/1OboEbC
See you on the 29th!
--
Doors open at 5:45pm and we’ll have pizza & sodas for you. Presentation starts at 6:30pm. |

Want More Women in Tech? Understand the Dynamics!
Roll back
description |
RSVP at the link above
<p>The tech industry is clamoring for more women. Despite many efforts, the numbers haven’t changed much. Why?</p> <p>All too often, diversity initiatives are designed without understanding the underlying dynamics.</p> <p>At <b>Navigate IT’s 1st allies event (men, this is your chance to join us)</b>, you will have the opportunity to be involved in a groundbreaking conversation on gender dynamics in tech. Be ready to share your perspective!</p> <p>To prepare:</p> <p>• Think about what is great about being a man or a woman in tech.</p> <p>• Articulate some of the challenges you face related to your gender.</p> <p>• Notice the gender dynamics in your workplace.</p> <p>We will use a polarity map from the Integral framework to bring some of these dynamics to light. We will discover that ordinary aspects of our work lives, things we take for granted or don’t think about, can be obstacles - even with our best intentions.</p> <p>Expect a rich and engaging conversation in a safe space.</p> <p>You will:</p> <p>• Have the opportunity to share your perspective and hear others’ perspectives.</p> <p>• Gain a greater understanding of how gender dynamics influence your teams.</p> <p>• Leave with new insight to help you navigate diversity. </p> <p>This is a rare opportunity to have a positive, honest dialog about important issues in the tech industry. It will be led by Terra Soma, co-founder of Navigate IT and Certified Integral Facilitator®. Her roles in tech have ranged from ecommerce analyst to software project manager. She now facilitates collaboration for tech teams.</p> <p>Terra will be joined by Zachary Feder, a former associate with LionHeart Consulting. He is well trained in group dynamics and conflict resolution and is a longtime student of Integral Theory.</p> <p><br><b><i>What your peers are saying about Terra and Zachary:</i></b></p> <p>"I have rarely been in a public environment where I felt both supported and challenged. Most of these engagements end up either being too wishy-washy, or too confrontational. <p>Let's explore how to attract and keep more women in tech over champaign brunch</p>
Terra and Zachary are a perfect yin-yang, neither of whom comes across as a cliche based on their gender, what we might think of as traditional feminine or masculine qualities. They both modeled all of them. Having that as their Way of Being made it all the easier for me to allow my own range of emotions to play out in the session. Comfortable, worthwhile, evolving. Data Meetup: Sentiment Analysis on Your Facebook Data with NLTK
Roll back
description |

This workshop will cover natural language processing in general and using NLTK for sentiment analysis in particular.
Some Python experience is recommended, but workshop will be targeted at the absolute beginner.
We anticipate the first hour to consist of an overview of NLTK's functionality, the next half hour or so will be spent in small groups working on several small assignments and eventually implementing a simple sentiment analysis tool.
We are going to be performing sentiment analysis on my Facebook message data. In order to perform the same analysis on YOUR Facebook message data follow the following instructions prior to coming to the meetup (as it takes Facebook a few hours to email you back your information)
Click at the top right of any Facebook page and select *Settings*
Click Download a copy of your Facebook data below your *General Account Settings*

Erlang/OTP at the Jedi Temple
Roll back

If you've heard of Erlang, perhaps you've also seen the acronym "OTP". What the heck is "OTP" and why do the Jedi refer to it as the "magic" that gives Erlang it's reputation for scalability and fault tolerance?
Why is it called Erlang/OTP? What gives? How does this relate to Elixir? What should I know about it?
Nathan Aschbacher of Visa and Elixir Games PDX has kindly agreed to join us and share his wisdom, give us an overview and also, to levitate R2D2.
Our generous hosts this month are HouseHappy.
October we followup on this deep topic with Jeff Weiss showing self-healing application magic in Elixir and OTP. Hope to see you there!

Hackathon for Bike Fun Calendar
Roll back
description |
Shakespeare said, to == be || to != be; but that is not the question we will address. Whether ’tis nobler for us to implement an outrageously cool feature or take arms against a sea of bugs, the question we will address is, “What happens when a whole bunch of techies go WILD on source code that helps people to have fun and bike?”
Of course, we are talking about the Shift Calendar. For those of you that don’t know, Portland is a leader among North American cities in that it has this website that crowdsources bike social rides and allows anybody to find them. The Shift Calendar is used to organize Pedalpalooza and many other fun bike events throughout the year, and other cities are using its source code to make their own! However, the source code for the Shift Calendar is somewhat stuck in 2008. The developer who created and has been maintaining it hasn’t had time to make significant improvements. Today, the site gets between 7,000 to 30,000 unique visitors per month. It plays an important role for the bike community, but has lost visitors over the years.
At this event, Techies on Bikes will come to the rescue and help bring the Shift Calendar into 2015!
Possibilities
'> hackathon(you, CSS skills);
.eyesore-from-looking-at-ShiftCal { amount: none; }
'> hackathon(you, HTML5);
people can now find fun rides using phone while at breweries, grandma’s house, community gardens growing organic cabbage, and other places with cell reception
'> hackathon(you, copywriting skills);
your clever words engage, inspire, and enlighten
'> hackathon(you, php, javascript);
notifications of new rides and activities
'> hackathon(you, Facebook API);
can invite friends to rides and spy on them
Although we are still working out the details, we will have a bike ride, food, and opportunities to socialize. Stay tuned for more information!

FAQ
Where can I see the Shift Calendar?
http://www.shift2bikes.org/cal/
Where is the source code for Shift Calendar?
https://github.com/ShiftGithub/shiftcal/
Why doesn’t Shift Calendar just use Calagator?
Calagator is written in Ruby. Shift relies on volunteer webmasters that do not know Ruby and won’t be able to maintain the site if it’s changed over to Ruby. Moreover, when deciding to attend social bike rides, people consider length of route, friends also attending, and other factors that may not be relevant to tech events.
Who is going to review pull requests on the source code?
Shift’s webmasters
I want to volunteer for this event. How do I get involved?
Please send a message to One Hwang : http://www.meetup.com/Techies-On-Bikes/members/184089389/ |

<p>Presenter: Eric Redmond - Solutions Architect at Nike</p> <p><br>Networking: 6:30 - 7:00 <br>Presentation: 7:00 - 8:00</p> <p>
The most difficult audience members when presenting or writing for are not the ones we all fear, the smarty-pants, know-it-alls. Much more difficult are attempting to communicate with those that have no context or basic knowledge at all. This talk is about how to break down those walls, and cover topics on the proper audience level. Cartoons help.</p> |

### Hazelcast: Open Source Java Based In Memory Computing
Talip Öztürk, founder of Hazelcast, will give a technical deep dive on the open source Java based in-memory computing platform. Hazelcast 3.5, the most recent version of the leading in-memory data grid, was just released in June. Talip will discuss some of the new features in the release and have plenty of time for Q&A afterward.
### Speaker
Talip Öztürk is the founder of Hazelcast, a Java-based, open-source in memory computing platform. In 2003, he became fascinated with Jini (Apache River) and developed an implementation of JavaSpaces. In 2008, his passion for distributed programming led him to develop Hazelcast, prior to which he was the director of technology at Zaman Media Group. Öztürk holds a BA from the Middle East Technical University, Turkey. |

CAT BarCamp

BarCamps are free unconferences where the people who show up on the day of the conference decide what the conference is about. It has been shown time and time again to produce some of the best material available. The spontaneity of the entire event stands in stark contrast to the more planned conferences you may have been to. Essentially the entire conference is a hallway track, and many people feel it’s the best quality of BarCamps!
The CAT at PSU is an ops training organization that has secured the venue and is organizing the event. We expect many job-hungry students skilled in development, computer science, operations, and everything else to be in attendance at this event and we want to enable as many connections as possible.
Although registration is not required please RSVP at https://goo.gl/Bf9ttp so that our organizers can plan accordingly. |
