create Calagator::Event 1250462746 18-hour Game Jam – The PIGSquad EagleJam Roll back

description nil The Portland Indie Game Squad will be hosting its fourth local Game Jam this coming August 25th at the East Portland Eagles Lodge! Participants will be challenged to make a game within an 18-hour period, following a theme delivered at the beginning of the Jam!
August 25th 7am - Lodge will open for Jammers.
August 25th 8am - Jam will begin.
August 25th 6pm - The Lodge will be closed to Jammers.
August 25th 7pm - Jammers are welcome to join others at 1718 SW 16th Ave., Portland, Oregon 97201 to continue work on their games, or Jam at home until 11pm.
August 25th 11pm - The 1718 house will be closed to Jammers.
August 26th 7am - Eagle's Lodge will reopen for Jammers.
August 26th 12pm - Jam ends.

The space we have available to us allows for an approximate 18-hour Jam. Because of this limited amount of time and Jammers' responsibility for their own equipment/supplies, it is strongly recommended that teams construct a board/card game, though any medium of game is allowed as long as it follows the prompt delivered at the beginning of the 18-hour period.

A majority of teams will be constructed beforehand, though jammers may participate individually, form a team the night of, or join an existing team. Jammers are responsible for their own supplies/equipment, food, safety, and transportation. There are numerous restaurants located in the area.

To assist in creating Jam teams, please post below with your preferred game development skillset or team interests if you plan on participating and do not already have a team formed. Please RSVP regardless; we have room for 60 jammers.

Big thanks to Jeffrey Sens, Sasha Orme, and the East Portland Eagles Lodge for their efforts and sponsorship! Also feel free to join PIGSquad for the Pwning Cancer game tournament and free play session after the Jam on Sunday in conjunction with the Hawthorne Street Fair!

E-mail us at [email protected] if you have any questions!

create Calagator::Event 1250462742 Portland G4C: Meaningful Design in Games Roll back

description nil One way to engage social good with games is through careful consideration of meaningful design. In this presentation, Corvus Elrod highlights occurrences of meaningful game design throughout history, as well as in video games. Please join us for this exciting discussion and meet fellow members. We also will have a brief update on the status of Portland Games for Change including upcoming events and the next steps on setting group priorities. ----------- Corvus Elrod is a Semionaut and Play Designer. He is the co-founder of a Zakelro!, a two-person, one-poodle creative studio in Portland, OR. He is also the creator of Bhaloidam, an independently published tabletop storytelling platform. Corvus has been designing participatory experiences for the better part of two decades, beginning with his exploration of improvisational theater. As he incorporated more and more game mechanics into his performances, he turned his attention to how game mechanics communicate meaning and began formalizing a semiotic theory of game design. He has contracted for a broad spectrum of clients, from major videogame studios and publishers--including THQ, EA, and Playdom--to installation artists and theater directors. He is also working on several small game projects in collaboration with other independent developers and artists.

Talk description: Businesses rely on getting valuable new software into the hands of users as fast as possible, while making sure that they keep their production environments stable. Continuous Delivery is a revolutionary and scalable approach to software delivery that enables any team, including teams within enterprise IT organizations, to achieve rapid, reliable releases through better collaboration between developers, testers, DBAs and operations, and automation of the build, deploy, test and release process. I’ll start by discussing the value of CD to the business, inspired by the lean startup movement. I’ll then present the principles and practices involved in continuous delivery, including value stream mapping, the deployment pipeline, acceptance test driven development, zero-downtime releases, and incremental development. I’ll cover how CD is enabled by an ecosystem including Devops, cloud computing, agile testing, and continuous deployment.

update Calagator::Event 1250462659 OWASP Chapter Meeting Roll back

description Double Feature! Kevin Dyer will be discussing his current research related to protocol security. A second talk will also be given by a yet-to-be-named speaker. Stay tuned for details. The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is a 501c3 not-for-profit worldwide charitable organization focused on improving the security of application software. To sign up for future meeting notes and to discuss security topics with local gurus, sign up on the OWASP Portland mailing list: https://lists.owasp.org/mailman/listinfo/owasp-portland Meetings are free and open to the public. Double Feature! For this chapter meeting, we have two protocol-oriented talks at PSU. Basic refreshments will be provided. Kevin P. Dyer presents:
What Encryption Leaks and Why Traffic Analysis Countermeasures Fail As more applications become web-based, an increasing amount of client-server interactions are exposed to our networks and vulnerable to Traffic Analysis (TA) attacks. In one form, TA attacks exploit the lengths and timings of packets in a protocol's flow to infer sensitive information about communications. In the context of encrypted HTTP connections, such as HTTP over SSH, this means an adversary can determine which website a user is visiting. In the context of a specific web application, an adversary can determine user input by viewing only a few client-server interactions. Recent advances in the application of Machine Learning tools demonstrate that TA attacks are possible despite industry-standard encryption such as TLS, SSH or IPSec. What is more, even if a protocol uses stronger countermeasures, such as fixed-length per-packet padding, this incurs significant overhead but only provides limited security benefit. These types of security vs. efficiency trade-offs are of immediate concern to security-aware applications such as Tor, and performance-sensitive application features such as Google Search Autocomplete. In this talk, Kevin will address the state-of-the-art TA attacks and proposed countermeasures in the context of network and web application security. Most importantly, he will discuss open problems in this area and why a general-purpose TA countermeasure remains elusive. Timothy D. Morgan presents:
HTTPS, Cookies, and Men-in-the-Middle: Why You Shouldn't Allow Marketing Departments to Design Your Security Protocols Login session management in modern web applications is largely dominated by use of HTTP cookies. However, HTTP cookies were never designed for secure applications, which has led to a significant number of protocol security problems. In this talk, Tim will start with a brief background on why HTTP cookies are a poorly-conceived mechanism to begin with, and continue with a discussion of how this impacts security. He will describe several lesser-known cookie-based session management problems that remain wide spread and allow for session hijacking through a variety of clever attacks.
Kevin P. Dyer is a PhD student at Portland State University. His research focuses on building protocols that are resistant to Traffic Analysis attacks. Prior to his academic life, Kevin worked as an engineer on various projects in telecommunications security, web security and network security. Kevin holds an MSc in the Mathematics of Cryptography and Communications from Royal Holloway, University of London, and a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics from Santa Clara University. Timothy D. Morgan is a consultant at Virtual Security Research, LLC (VSR). As an application security specialist and digital forensics researcher, Tim has been taking deep technical dives in security for over a decade. Tim resides in Oregon and works at VSR where he helps to secure his customers' environments through penetration testing, training, and forensics investigations. His past security research has culminated in the release of several responsibly disclosed vulnerabilities in popular software products. Tim also develops and maintains several open source digital forensics tools which implement novel data recovery algorithms.
The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is a 501c3 not-for-profit worldwide charitable organization focused on improving the security of application software. create Calagator::Event 1250462728 Portland Digital eXperience (PDX) Roll back

description nil First and foremost, we wanted to showcase Portland and folks that champion Portlandy ideals. I’m lucky that, for the most part, I get to sit back and watch all of the amazing stuff that happens in Portland. And I consistently revel in the awesomeness that people here are building. With PDX, we wanted to showcase that almost frenetic variety of creativity in our town. But we also wanted to bring in folks who subscribed to common ideals. That’s why, in addition to some amazing Portland people, you’ll find folks like Tumblr and Flipboard on the docket. Second, we wanted this to be a true creative festival atmosphere. One of things we wanted most was to make this a festival of creativity, with some of that being creative applications of technology and some of that being the creative spirit of the music industry. That’s why MFNW and PDX are inextricably linked. And it’s also why we’ve got speakers with a foot in music and a foot in tech, like Spotify, Shazam, CASH Music, and Tender Loving Empire. Third, we wanted to create something intimate, inspiring, and invigorating. Many of us remember the serendipitous experiences of conferences like SXSW and Big Omaha. We wanted to capture that same kind of experience, bring interesting speakers, and get interesting folks in town for the event. Our goal is to have you sitting next to someone you never imagined having the opportunity to meet. Or getting the chance to chat with an amazing panelist at one of the concerts. Or simply running into someone on the street at the food carts. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll get to spend a little more time chatting with awesome Portland people whom you never get to see. Last but not least, we wanted PDX to provide a good excuse for people to visit Portland. Especially for those folks who are actively considering Portland for the next phase of their business or career. You see, sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live where we do. And to work here. But rest assured, there are any number of people and companies outside looking in. And this is a great opportunity to showcase what we’ve got here. http://siliconflorist.com/2012/08/14/experience-portland-thinking-musicfestnw-tech-conference-pdx/
