create Calagator::Event 1250471769 Self-guided learning — A survival guide Roll back

description nil You’re just getting started, but where exactly do you start? Should you freelance or head for corporate cover? How soon should you qualify your experience as, well, experience? How much advice should you take from so-called mentors? Is it possible to love too many things at once? Why hasn’t school made you the programming wizard you’d hoped to become? Admit it: you’re a little intrigued. I’m going to tell you my story—the bumps and scrapes and occasional victories experienced over my nearly twenty years as a web developer. I’ve learned a few things that can hopefully help you succeed on your new self-guided journey.

update Calagator::Event 1250471548 PDXWIT #Action Fireside Chat with Congressman Earl Blumenauer Roll back

description ** Please RSVP on Eventbrite ** Join us on Thursday, April 13th at 5:00 for an informal fireside chat with Congressman Earl Blumenauer at New Relic. Earl Blumenauer is the U.S. Representative for Oregon's 3rd congressional district, serving since 1996. His district includes most of East Portland and cities to the east of Portland. We will use this as an opportunity to learn how our top issues — Civil Rights, Women's Health, Gender Equity, and Health Care — are playing out on the national stage. The Congressman has an hour to answer questions and so we will be accepting pre submitted questions (you can submit yours here - https://docs.google.com/a/pdxwit.org/forms/d/1fdxGvmkaYR8o_URbVhOcTYFuixIkjREPlRQnpFCege4/viewform?edit_requested=true ) as well as drawing raffle tickets so that we can get as many questions answered as possible in the hour. The Congressman will be available from 5:30 to 6:30, so please show up on time and either come prepared with questions or submit yours here. We are limiting this event to 200 people so we can all fit in the space, so please RSVP ahead of time if you’d like to attend. Light snacks and drinks will be served. PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. ** Please RSVP on Eventbrite ** Join us on Thursday, April 13th at 5:00 for an informal fireside chat with Congressman Earl Blumenauer at New Relic. create Calagator::Event 1250471767 FutureTalk with Gene Kim Roll back

description nil #[Top Lessons Learned While Researching and Writing The DevOps Handbook](https://impactflow.com/event/2629/checkout/tickets) ** **› Please also RSVP via [Meetup](https://www.meetup.com/New-Relic-FutureTalks-PDX/events/238935649/)** After over five years of work, The DevOps Handbook is finally out! The original plan was for this book to come out before The Phoenix Project in 2013, but we delayed the Handbook because there was so much about DevOps that needed to go into the book, but I personally didn’t understand well enough. In this talk, I will share my top learnings while co-authoring this book with Jez Humble, Patrick Debois, and John Willis. This will include specific DevOps transformation case studies around value stream mapping, continuous integration and delivery, how organizational design, Conway’s Law and architecture are all needed for the achievement of DevOps outcomes, as well concrete techniques to build a culture of continuous experimentation learning. I will describe some of my favorite case studies, including those from Google, Etsy, LinkedIn, Target, Nordstrom, Capital One, Nationwide Insurance and more. The DevOps Handbook has 48 case studies, and for people who want to research more, there are 503 endnotes and 192 footnotes. ***Gene Kim*** *is a multiple award-winning CTO, researcher and author. He was founder and CTO of Tripwire for 13 years. He has written three books, including “The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win” and the newly-released “The DevOps Handbook.” Since 2014, he has been the organizer of the DevOps Enterprise Summit.* ##Details **** NOTE: please also REGISTER** for the event via ImpactFlow. We apologize for the extra step, but this will help us continue to provide the best possible free events to the Portland tech and startup communities. **• Doors will open at 5:30 for a networking happy hour!** The food, beer and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic. **• The presentation will begin at 6:30p.** **• NOTE: after the event**, everyone is invited to continue networking at a special happy hour opportunity, one story up at Portland City Grill. › Stay tuned for the latest developments and updates on this and upcoming events by joining our Meetup group, **New Relic FutureTalks PDX** (link above), and following us on Twitter **@newrelic**. Check out our **[blog](https://blog.newrelic.com/author/christian-sinai/)** for event recaps and videos. › FutureTalk is brought to you by **New Relic** in collaboration with **TAO**.

update Calagator::Event 1250471755 Emacs Hackers Meetup Roll back

description For this month, our Hacker Meetup will be hacking a _personalized breadcrumb_ tool. Many breadcrumb-like tools and functions already exist (using `find-tag` and `pop-tag` is one of these), but writing your own breadcrumb functions with marks from your own favorite commands, could be both fun and useful when jumping around a large code base or document. We’re planning on pair programming to come up with a couple of implementations and share our implementations and discoveries. Hope to see you there. Time permitting, we will have **lightning talks** about anything interesting our local hackers have found or made. If you have something to share, by all means, come along. This will be followed by **Office Hours**, where we can all get together and discuss, fix or hack on new or existing projects. If you have a little or big project or problem you'd like to solve, bring it, and pair up with someone who may have some experience in that area. Hope to see you all there! **Note:** We've started a PDX-oriented Emacs Slack group, **pdx-emacs.slack.com**. Interested? Contact someone in the group to get an invitation. create Calagator::Event 1250471753 Business for a Better Portland: Addressing the housing crisis Roll back

description nil Addressing the housing and homelessness crisis is essential to the future success of our city and businesses. With an issue of this scale and complexity, it can be difficult to know how we, as businesses, can engage in solutions. In partnership with Business for a Better Portland members New Seasons Market and TerraMai PDX, we invite you to join us on Monday, April 17 for an event connecting members and business leaders with change makers working on the frontlines to ensure safe, stable and affordable housing for all. You’ll have an opportunity to learn from community leaders, provide input on our advocacy, and walk away with a clearer sense of the concrete options for civic engagement. The challenges our city faces call for a new approach to engagement that is collaborative and advances the outcomes that will benefit not only our businesses, but the community as a whole. We're excited to offer Business for a Better Portland members exclusive, earlybird registration. We look forward to seeing you! Registration for non-members will be available as space allows starting April 3rd. Not a member yet? <a href="https://www.bbpdx.org/join-us/">Find out more about how to become one</a>.
