update Calagator::Event 1250471478 Portland Accessibility and User Experience Meetup - Accessibility for Developers with Joe & Bruce Roll back

description Let's follow the life cycle of an accessibility bug. Joe Watkins will guide us on a developer-oriented exploration of how these bugs hatch, mature, multiply, and — most importantly — how these pesky critters can be squashed. Come join in the moderated Q&A. We will begin the evening with social time and then the presentation at 7 so there is plenty of time for Q&A, discussion and a bit of networking/wrap-up at the end. Presenter: [Joe Watkins](https://www.linkedin.com/in/joewatkins/) is an Accessibility Consultant with [Simply Accessible](http://simplyaccessible.com/). Joe has a passion for the web and working with others to make it more usable for everyone. Moderator: [Bruce Elgort](https://bruceelgort.com/) is an instructor in the web development program at Clark College. He emphasizes accessibility from day 1 in all of his classes. Bruce is also a low vision user who himself relies on accessibility with his day-to-day activities. Let's follow the life cycle of an accessibility bug. create Calagator::Event 1250471749 We Come From the Future - Comparing Portland to Vancouver, BC. Roll back

description nil As Portland sits on the precipice of considerable growth, one wonders what the future will hold. Will the city embrace and sustain the coming changes, allowing for prosperity, access and affordability for all its residents? And what will be the engine of change and growth, providing high-quality employment as the local economy continues to shift away from resource industries? While it is tempting to look to our Bay Area neighbors to the south as an indicator of Portland’s future, a better analogy may be found from our friends in the north. From the perspective of population size and geographical boundaries, Vancouver, British Columbia bears a strong resemblance to PDX. With an economy that has been trying to transition from forestry and mining to high-tech and knowledge jobs, Vancouver has bore the brunt of the influence of extreme, external wealth. In many ways, it may show a crystal ball 10 to 15 years in the future. <strong>Keith Lay</strong> is a recent transplant to Portland from Vancouver, BC, where he ran a design and software development agency. In the last decade and a half, he has seen the effects rapid change and wealth on his city. On April 20th at New Relic, he will give a presentation that compares such issues of housing cost and affordability, the impact on neigborhoods, small businesses and schools, and the effects this has had on a nascent high-tech scene. He will then be joined by a high-octane panel of Portland’s cognoscenti to discuss what Portland’s future may hold: <strong>Kevin Cavenaugh</strong> is the principal of Guerrilla Development Co., which designs and builds many of the spaces Portland’s up and coming businesses choose to take root. <strong>Sarah Iannarone</strong> is the Associate Director at First Stop Portland (at PSU), and is an urban best practices expert advising leaders around the globe on how to build better cities and regions. <strong>Stephen Green</strong> is the Portland city manager for Townsquared, and a long time champion of local high-tech and small businesses from a development and financing perspective <strong>Malia Spencer</strong> is a journalist and tech reporter for the Portland Business Journal, as well having her finger on the pulse of the local business world. <strong>Rick Turoczy</strong> is the founder of Silicon Florist and Portland Incubator Experiment, and is engaged in numerous projects around the Portland start-up scene. We will discuss the impacts of rapid growth and the influx of external capital on communities, people and business, look at potential solutions to the negative impacts, and find ways to frame the conversation that works for all stakeholders. Date: Thursday April 20th Time: 5:30 - 7:30 pm Place: New Relic, 27th Floor, 111 SW 5th Ave. <strong>New Relic</strong> is a software development company that is helping thousands of customers consistently improve their software performance, every day, all day.

description nil Presented by David Howell CEO of Avatron In 2013, the “Summer of Snowden” heightened awareness among businesses and individuals of the insecurity of data stored in the cloud. Despite that, people still routinely use Google Docs, whose corporate owner promises to sell private data to its customers, the advertisers. People still store sensitive data in the cloud, where data breaches are virtually inevitable. Avatron launched Air Connect, an alternative approach to allowing access of personal data from anywhere. Like Skype, Air Connect employs UDP tunneling to forge a direct connection to a remote computer, even if it is behind a stringent firewall or on a dynamic IP address. We’ll walk through the architecture of Air Connect, discussing design decisions made along the way. We’ll talk through the joys and woes of launching a geeky networking software service on Kickstarter. And we’ll talk about the ultimate demise of the Air Connect service. <h3>Speaker</h3> Dave Howell is CEO of Avatron, a popular mobile app developer. Avatron’s apps include Air Sharing, the first iPhone app that allowed management, viewing, and printing of local and remote documents, Air Connect, which lets people connect directly and securely to a personal computer without sending data through the cloud, and Air Display, which turns a tablet into a computer monitor. Before founding Avatron in 2008, Dave was a senior software manager at Apple, where he contributed to productivity software and professional applications. Dave joined Apple when the computer company bought the assets of his previous company, Pablo Media. When he’s not leading software teams, Dave plays piano in a jazz quartet in Portland. On Twitter, you can follow Dave at @dshowell or Avatron at @avatron. <h3>When</h3> April 20, 2017 (Chapter Meetings, 3rd Thursday) Schedule 8:30 – 9:00 am – Sign In 9:00 – 10:15 am – Presentation 10:15 – 10:30 am – Break, Chapter Announcements 10:30 – 11:30 am – Presentation continued Standard Insurance Center in the Atrium room, 900 SW 5th Avenue in Portland. create Calagator::Event 1250471735 The SaaS Product Roadmap Roll back

description nil You know the pain: there are so many features you want to build and bugs you want to fix, but there's not enough time to do it all. How should you prioritize? How can you align your product roadmap with your business goals? We've all wasted time and money building things that nobody wanted, and we've neglected features and UX improvements that could've made a difference. The question is, how do we know what's the optimal way to use our development hours? These are some of the topics we'll probably discuss: • Jobs to Be Done (JTBD) framework to align features with business goals • Scrum, Agile and Kanban frameworks to prioritize issues and manage dev teams • How to incorporate user feedback into our product roadmap • How to manage remote teams effectively • The Lean way of testing assumptions to avoid building things that nobody wants We're looking forward to sharing what I've learned from my mistakes building Billy, and learning from your experiences as well. Coffee, tea and draft beer will be provided. Come hang out with other SaaS founders and share your story!

update Calagator::Event 1250471731 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting Roll back

description We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. **This month's meeting is on the 27th floor.** ##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm ###Tim Wade: What we talk about when we talk about unit testing If you're new to coding you may find TDD one of the harder things to learn when all you want to do is get your hands dirty and write some code. As you grow this may be further compounded by the fact that no one seems to agree on (or even know) what unit testing is. Like me, you might read up on it, but find it hard to apply the principles you learned in your favorite web framework, which seems to have some ideas of its own. In this talk, I'll compare some common points of view on what we might mean by unit and integration testing, and why we might want to embrace these differences to keep a flexible approach to what we're testing. ###Lauren Voswinkel: Conway's Game of Life Code Retreat. "We'll take 30-45 minutes to work on Conway's Game of Life. Pair programming is *highly* encouraged, but is not required. We'll take some time to talk about what we learned during the exercise, as well as what approaches worked and what didn't. The whole idea of this exercise is to have a space and time to actively practice coding." **Please Bring Your Laptops** After presentations we'll have more socializing time. ##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!** ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 5th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 5th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking. ABOUT THE GROUP: *The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!* We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. **This month's meeting is on the 27th floor.** ##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm ###Tim Wade: What we talk about when we talk about unit testing If you're new to coding you may find TDD one of the harder things to learn when all you want to do is get your hands dirty and write some code. create Calagator::Event 1250471732 PDXWIT #Action Women’s Strength Self-Defense Class Roll back

description nil ** Please RSVP on Eventbrite ** Suggested donation in support of the Women’s Strength program: $5-$10 PDXWIT #Action is proud to offer a Women’s Strength self-defense class on June 12th at 5:30. The introductory class is presented by WomenStrength, who introduce all those who identify as women to strategies — including survival-level fighting skills — to defend against sexual assault. This workshop is in support of PDXWIT #Action’s top local issue of supporting public safety. Class activities and discussions are designed to help participants identify their risks, evaluate their strengths and explore their options for dealing with the threat of sexual violence. Class activities focus on practicing verbal and physical strategies and discussion topics focus on sexual and domestic violence. Although the WomenStrength program is operated out of the Portland Police Bureau, the instructors are not police officers. They are highly skilled civilians who teach safety and de-escalation to the community at large. Note: This training is neither based on nor in support of Portland Police Bureau’s tactics that have been criticized as an excessive use of force. This event is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us for any accommodation requests or questions. Beverages will be provided. The agenda for the evening is as follows: 5:30pm: Arrive and get settled 5:45pm: Workshop begins 7:00pm: Workshop ends PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events.
