Anitian and AWS Security Automation in the Cloud Free Workshop
Roll back
| description |

FREE all day workshop focused on security automation in the cloud.
AWS customers continue to struggle demonstrating alignment with security, compliance and audit requirements, such as the PCI-DSS. Additionally, many compliance requirements necessitate administrative and operational security controls that lack technical validation.
This workshop is designed to instruct AWS cloud engineers, DevOps team members, security practitioners, and Managed Security Service Providers (MSSP) how to secure and manage regulated customer workloads in AWS. This class will focus on the security of an AWS customer account design (e.g. AWS CIS Foundation Benchmark), security architecture (e.g. AWS CIS 3-Tier Web Benchmark) and security automation leading practices. This workshop is an intermediate to advanced workshop with an emphasis on designing security automation for regulated workloads in AWS (e.g. PCI, DoD, CJIS, HIPAA, DFARs (800-171), FERPA and others).
The result will enable cloud engineers and security practitioners to design, architect and implement automation in an AWS customer account to automatically enforce compliance requirements. It will also enable attendees to document their security governance/audit readiness through integration of AWS Security Partners from our AWS Marketplace and Security Competency Partners and Solutions.
What will I learn in this class?
How to design automation in AWS to enforce security controls and compliance requirements
Automate audit findings to accelerate the compliance process
Use AWS Partners and Marketplace tools to create more secure and reliable environments
Course Objectives:
Establish secure foundational account design and/or remediation of existing customer accounts
Configure and manage AWS Security Services with a focus on automation
Implement and design security automation services through AWS services and partner solutions
Manage, secure and audit the use of AWS services using real-time risk management processes
Leverage shared compliance across multiple security frameworks (e.g. PCI, DoD, CJIS, etc.)
Learn about and leverage key security partners from the AWS Partner Network (APN)
Learn about Container Security, Serverless Architecture, Advanced Encryption, and Auto-Healing in AWS

Overview
===
Insecure deserialization was recently added to OWASP's list of the top 10 most critical web application security risks, yet it is by no means a new vulnerability category. Data serialization and deserialization have been used widely in applications, services and frameworks, with many programming languages supporting them natively. Deserialization got more attention recently as a potential vehicle to conduct several types of attacks: data tampering, authentication bypass, privilege escalation, various injections and, finally, remote code execution. Two recent vulnerabilities in Apache Commons and Apache Struts, both allowing remote code execution, helped raise awareness of this risk.
We will discuss how data serialization and deserialization are used in software, the dangers of deserializing untrusted input, and how to avoid insecure deserialization vulnerabilities.

===
Alexei Kojenov is a Senior Application Security Consultant with years of prior software development experience. During his career with IBM, he gradually moved from writing code to breaking code. Since late 2016, Alexei has been working as a consultant at Aspect Security, helping businesses identify and fix vulnerabilities and design secure applications. Aspect Security was recently acquired by Ernst&Young and joined EY Advisory cybersecurity practice.

Agile Estimating and Planning deserves a second discussion. Planning and estimating projects and their costs is here to stay in our business lives, often viewed as a necessary chore. Mike Cohn's book articulates the common mistakes that come along with creating a "project plan" - and provides practices and tools to better assess and solve business problems by iteratively planning, sizing, communicating, and executing - built on agile principles. We invite you to pick a chapter in the book that is especially interesting to you to read, and provide your insights to the group.

Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-how-to-study-for-a-technical-interview-tickets-42283419847] is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar led by an Engineering Leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 20. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this workshop!
Agenda:
5:00 PM: Doors open
5:15 PM: Introduction
5:30 PM: Workshop begins
6:30 PM: Workshop ends
Event FAQ:
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: No on-site parking available at this event.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: No secured bike parking available at this event.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Yes, taking public transportation to this event is recommended. The event is conveniently located near MAX and bus lines.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Do you want to learn how Bitcoin and Ethereum work, how cryptography plays a key role in securing funds, or how a network of untrusted computers guessing random numbers quadrillions of times per second adds security to the blockchain?
Join Scott Bigelow, Back-end Developer at Augur, for an introduction to the blockchain and some common blockchain-based applications. Technologies, such as the blockchain and Ethereum, can provide new opportunities in the startup-rich ecosystem of Portland. Additionally, understanding these revolutionary design principles can help illuminate new ways of designing your own systems.
No previous working knowledge of cryptography or other supporting technologies is necessary, as this will be a ground-up introduction.
Speaker bio:
Scott Bigelow is a Blockchain Engineer for Augur, a decentralized Ethereum project developing prediction market software. Since the late 1990's, Scott has been developing software and running large distributed systems, working in industries such as enterprise analytics, real estate, and mobile video games. His involvement with cryptocurrencies began in 2013 with Bitcoin and more recently with Ethereum and Smart Contract development.

Data Science Career Paths and Business Adoption
Roll back
| description |
Many are interested in data science as a career. In this presentation, we’ll break data science down into smaller pieces that can be better understood and might help you with deciding if some or all of data science is a career path that you want to pursue. We’ll also get into some of the additional skills critical to success as a data scientist with the objective of being effective and/or contribute meaningfully to a data science project, and not just get the job title.
Beyond the more mechanical question of what it takes to be a data scientist, we’ll also talk about business adoption of data science into business processes and decision making. These two topics tie together when we think about being effective with data science.
Some questions we’ll try to answer:
<ul>
<li>
What different kinds of data scientist (and data science) exist?
</li>
<li>
What different kinds of work exists under the data science umbrella?
</li>
<li>
Technical skills needed.
</li>
<li>
Business skills needed.
</li>
<li>
How can a non-data scientist contribute to a data science team?
</li>
</ul>
Bring your questions and let’s go exploring!
<h3>
Speaker: Asoka Diggs - Data Scientist @ Intel

Deron Jensen, manager of the Product Security team at New Relic, will speak about container security!
This presentation will show how the Linux kernel and container technologies can isolate and control the processes to provide a secure, isolated compute system. Docker or other technologies can be used to manage capabilities and securely deploy containers. This will demonstrate vulnerabilities unique to containers, and techniques to break out of vulnerable containers. We will show examples of deploying microservices securely with containers and areas that need further research to allow other applications to run securely in a private or public cloud. |
