Hack the Dot!
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
*Hack the Dot* is a hackathon where code school students, working developers, marketing and design professionals, and anyone else interested in the Web come together to build ideas. Use your skills in web development, storytelling, and creative ideation to build a humorous (maybe even functional!) product, while meeting people in your tech/startup community. This quarter we're teaming up with pdxFLIT and Puppet Labs. Join us!
*How does it work?*
At a domain-driven hackathon, all of the teams are given a single premium domain name at the beginning of the event. All teams then have two hours to come up with a product inspired by that domain, fueled by food and beverage. Whichever team builds and pitches the most creative and funny idea for the domain wins!
Prizes include the premium domain name itself, plus swag from our sponsors!
*Timeline*
6:00 - Meet with teams, get food and drink
6:15 - MC introductions, reveal the night's domain name!
6:30 - Start hacking!
8:30 - Stop hacking, team presentations
9:15 - End presentations, announce winner
*Do I need to bring a team?*
Nope! Teams are formed randomly at the beginning.
*Do you have a Code of Conduct for this event?*
[We sure do!](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/c/1/a/highres_471776346.jpeg) Make sure you read and agree before signing up! |

PHPDX - Up to my Eyeballs in Technical Debt!

<p>**PLEASE NOTE THE DAY HAS CHANGED. We will be meeting on a monday this month. There will still be pizza, learning and networking with the fabulous PHP Community!**</p> <p>Every decision we make in our projects has the potential to increase or reduce technical debt. While the only way to completely eliminate the debt is to never write any code, there are steps that we as engineers, project managers, and project stakeholders can take to mitigate our risk.</p> <p>This talk covers the concept of technical debt, its potential to devastate projects, and red flags that project teams can look for to reduce its impact before it spirals out of control.</p> <p>--------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p>Steve Grunwell is a Senior Software Engineer at Liquid Web. Specializing in WordPress and application development he has worked with brands and organizations including Microsoft, TED, Xylem, Elmer’s, and Experience Columbus.</p> <p>Steve has released numerous plugins in the WordPress.org repositories, including one from the grounds of The White House during the first annual National Day of Civic Hacking in 2013. When he’s not writing software he enjoys hiking, music, and writing about writing software on his blog.</p> <p>Steve holds a B.A. in Telecommunications from Bowling Green State University where he graduated Cum Laude with minors in General Business and Recording Technologies.</p> <p>More information, including portfolio work and his development blog, can be found at <a href="https://stevegrunwell.com" class="linkified">https://stevegrunwell.com</a>.</p> |

This group is for all educators interested in learning about the K-12 Computer Science Framework Core Concepts and Core Practices and how to integrate computer science into any content area.
In this meeting, you will code to learn and show what you know using Scratch. Participants will tell a story and demonstrate a deep understanding of social studies (or any!) content. Coding and computing will become a game-changing skill for our students. By learning to integrate it seamlessly into our core content - rather than adding computer science as another subject to teach, we are preparing students for the future and providing unparalleled motivation and challenge to our curriculum.
Let us help you get started integrating and aligning computer science today! This is the perfect place to begin building your computer science Professional Learning Network.
You will need to bring your laptop computer 💻to participate in this meeting!
Thank you to Alchemy Code Lab for supporting K-12 computer science education! |

When it comes to your business, your network is the gateway to the world. Unfortunately, protecting your network from evolving threats is more difficult than ever. Device proliferation, BYOD, Internet of Things, virtualization, hybrid cloud adoption—all are crucial trends that enhance business performance. But they also add complexity and increase the attack surface. DNS is an essential component of network connectivity, but it has emerged as the number one threat vector for malware command and control, DDoS attacks, and data exfiltration. Even as your network modernizes and gains valuable new capabilities, threats multiply exponentially. During this session, learn more about DNS, threats to DNS infrastructure, and different methods to address these threats.
Speaker bio:
Kevin Zettel is a security-focused Technical Marketing Engineer who works with Infoblox to lock down the DNS and secure it for enterprises. Kevin knows that security is the center focus of companies and believes that without security, industries will unquestionably fall apart. Kevin has worked with the Infoblox Security Ecosystem to manage many security vendors such as McAfee, Cisco, ServiceNow, Aruba, and many others. He knows the security landscape and sees the necessity and demand that businesses have to secure their capital. With a degree from Central Washington University and an education in programming, Kevin has the technical know how to get secured. |

Join us for Happy Hour at Autodesk on October 23rd.
We all know that the professional world can have its challenges. The good news is that the challenges we face at work can often support our growth and development. This month we are reflecting on personal growth from professional challenges. To facilitate this discussion our conversation starter will be: How have you grown from a past or current professional challenge?
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
An employee of Autodesk will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities.
Melanie Rickmann, of Grey Ghost Studio, will tell us how to Use Adversity to Fuel Your Career
Zhou Fang, Advisor, will talk about Navigating biases and coming out on top
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Anyone is free to use any restroom that they are comfortable using. We do have gender neutral restrooms located on the 5th floor that guests are welcome to use. They would need to be accompanied by an Autodesk employee as they are not located in a public space.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes. We will provide light appetizers, beer, wine and soft drinks. We will provide vegan and GF options.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: We do not have onsite parking.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: All guests must enter and exit through our front door located between 2nd and 3rd on Ankeny. All guests will need to sign in at the front desk and sign an NDA.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: Yes, we can provide bike parking.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: YES! There is a street car and bus line stop very close to our office.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Power BI Flight School @ Office 365 PDX

Looking to get started with Power BI?
Bring your laptop to this hands-on tutorial on Microsoft Power BI. At this meeting of Office 365 PDX we’ll be talking about how end-users can get to work with Power BI. We're thinking of this class as a "Power BI Flight School", where we are teaching the basics of how end-users will navigate and use Power BI, not how to build or maintain complex reports.
We will dive into viewing dashboards, reports, understanding natural language query, Excel, and the other tools a user needs. No prior experience with Power BI is necessary, this session is not very technical, and we’ll be handing out log-in information to get you hands-on in a pre-built environment. Just bring a modern laptop with wifi and an up-to-date web browser. |
