Interested in joining the stellar crew of PDXWIT volunteers? New to volunteering with us? Want to meet other capable, driven women and allies in tech? You'll be in the right place at our Fall volunteer program overview. At the orientation, you'll learn about different volunteer roles, from regular engagements to occasional gigs; get an overview of expectations and processes; have any questions you bring answered; and meet others interested in volunteering with PDXWIT.
PDXWIT is an almost 100% volunteer-run organization, which means that volunteers are crucial to the success of our mission. There are plenty of ways to get involved. We can't wait to welcome you!

A: Yes, the streetcar stops right in front of the building.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Web Application Security spreads over the application functionality, the platform it is running on, the development and deployment environment, third-party applications used, and last but not least, the open source code it utilizes. The requirements breadth is mind-boggling. You ignore any of these aspects and you become vulnerable.
This talk will discuss a structured approach to establish essential security requirements based on the CIA triad. The discussion will then expand over how these requirements manifest in the industry standards such as PCI, Government agencies, and globally. It will also delve into third party and open source code scenarios. The audience will take home a checklist of different aspects of security requirements to consider when building a Web application.
Bio: Bhushan Gupta, Gupta Consulting, LLC.
Proven champion for quality and well-versed with software quality engineering, and an AppSec researcher, Bhushan is the principal consultant at Gupta Consulting, LLC. A Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (ASQ), he possesses deep and broad experience in solving complex problems, change management, and coaching and mentoring. As a member of Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP), he is dedicated to driving the AppSec to higher levels via integration of security into Agile software development life cycle. His research areas are: elicitation of security requirements, comprehensive testing approaches beyond penetration testing, application of test tools and use of AI (Machine Learning) in secure web application development.
Bhushan has a MS in Computer Science (1985) from New Mexico Tech and has worked at Hewlett-Packard and Nike Inc. in various roles. He was a faculty member at the Oregon Institute of Technology, Software Engineering department, from 1985 to 1995 and is currently an Adjunct Faculty member. |

The next Social Pitch is on September 8th!
The Social Pitch provides emerging social entrepreneurs with an opportunity to receive funding and engage the community with their projects. It is an alternative funding model for community good.
In person attendee:
Your ticket price gets you a delicious bowl of soup and a vote. At the end of the afternoon, after hearing the presentations and a short Q&A session with the do-good entrepreneurs, ballots are counted, and prizes are awarded. Remote attendee: Your ticket price gets you a vote. At the end of the afternoon, after watching the presentations and a short Q&A session with the do-good entrepreneurs, your votes via our Facebook poll will be counted, and prizes will be awarded.
What funds the cash prizes?
One hundred percent of the ticket revenue goes to funding the Cash Prizes. Your money goes directly to supporting an amazing community project or social enterprise! Thank you!
How does it work?
1. People with great, early-stage ideas (projects or startups) that will provide lasting benefit to our community submit applications, and we pick five of them to present their ideas.
2. Then, community members buy tickets to attend—whether in-person or via Facebook Live tickets—with each ticket granting the attendee a vote. If you’re an in-person attendee, you also get to enjoy freshly-baked bread and a bowl of soup brought to you by SoupCycle!
3. After the five presentations, the attendees vote, and all of the votes are tallied. The presenter with the most votes wins the cash prize!
Beyond the cash prize (everyone is a Winner.) Each presenter receives:
- Cash Prizes from ticket revenue of The Social Pitch and business service prizes (such as marketing or tech support)
- Your own custom-made promotional video to use to promote your project (value: $500)
- Pitch Clinic (value: $50)
- Up to 30 days of On-Demand membership at HatchLab PDX (value: $675)
- Plus, the experience and networking the finalists gain from being a part of this program and community (value: priceless)

Un-Redacting the Mueller Report and Abstracting the News with NLP
By Hobson Lane and Al Kari
Hobson will show you how to write a python "mad-libber" that can unredact the Mueller Report. The first person to correctly predict the next word better than the `mad-libber` will win an autographed copy of Natural Language Processing in Action, a book produced through open collaboration among Portland Python User Group Members, led by Cole Howard and Hannes Hapke. Then Hobson and Al Kari will show you how they use this same state-of-the-art language model to generate meaningful abstractive summaries of technical documents like clinical medical records.
About our speakers:
Hobson Lane's first Python apps were built with the help of friends at the Portland Python User Group almost a decade ago. Since then he's been using Python for everything from chatbots to building energy consumption forecasting. He's now CTO at Deep Canopy where they build smart cameras for industry. In his spare time Hobson teaches Python and data science on Springboard.com, Thinkful.com, and Totalgood.com and preaches crackpot ideas for harnessing the pending AI explosion for the greater good.
Al Kari is a Google Developer Expert (GDE) in Machine Learning, organizer of the TensorFlow-Northwest meetup group and CEO of Manceps, an engineering company focused on providing intelligent automation solutions to innovative businesses.

<p>You asked to talk to people who use Lean and Agile methods in government, and we found you John Dickson. What’s his biggest secret for success in using Lean and Agile? It’s all about respecting people and their opinions and never use the words Lean or Agile—and definitely never think of agile as a noun. John’s experience in Washington State and Spokane County government has made the papers—literally. And his Lean chops come straight out of Boeing.</p> <p>Come hear John set context for a meaty discussion on doing what we do every day—successfully and in some of the toughest places to do it. Listen carefully, and be prepared for a hands-on, cheerful, conflict-welcoming style as you pose your questions and question your assumptions about how government services get delivered.</p> <p>John has been an executive in private industry, state and now county government. He’s successfully led very large organizational transformations in each sector, giving him a unique perspective on how to effectively inspire people in any industry to willingly improve their processes to obtain better results.</p> <p>Since March 2013, John has been Spokane County’s Chief Operations Officer. He’s leading significant operational improvement activities within county government and across the region focused on more efficient, effective and affordable processes. Since 2014, over 500 improvement projects have been initiated and run by county staff. And by collaborating with many local government and business leaders, several regional law and justice reform projects are successfully being implemented.</p> <p>Previously, John worked for the military side of Boeing for over 20 years and had senior leadership roles on the Sea Launch, B-2 bomber, and F-22 Raptor programs. He left Boeing in 2006 to become Berg Integrated System’s General Manager, a start-up company in Plummer, ID, that fabricated large fuel bladders and expandable shelters for the US Army. His government career began in 2010 when he became WA State Employment Security Department’s Regional Area Director overseeing the WorkSource Spokane Employment Center. <p>You asked to talk to people who use Lean and Agile methods in government, and we found you John Dickson. What’s his biggest secret for success in using Lean and Agile? It’s all about respecting people and their opinions and never use the words Lean or Agile—and definitely never think of agile as a noun. John’s experience in Washington State and Spokane County government has made the papers—literally. And his Lean chops come straight out of Boeing.</p> <p>Come hear John set context for a meaty discussion on doing what we do every day—successfully and in some of the toughest places to do it. Listen carefully, and be prepared for a hands-on, cheerful, conflict-welcoming style as you pose your questions and question your assumptions about how government services get delivered.</p> <p>John has been an executive in private industry, state and now county government. He’s successfully led very large organizational transformations in each sector, giving him a unique perspective on how to effectively inspire people in any industry to willingly improve their processes to obtain better results.</p> <p>Since March 2013, John has been Spokane County’s Chief Operations Officer. He’s leading significant operational improvement activities within county government and across the region focused on more efficient, effective and affordable processes. Since 2014, over 500 improvement projects have been initiated and run by county staff. And by collaborating with many local government and business leaders, several regional law and justice reform projects are successfully being implemented.</p> <p>Previously, John worked for the military side of Boeing for over 20 years and had senior leadership roles on the Sea Launch, B-2 bomber, and F-22 Raptor programs. He left Boeing in 2006 to become Berg Integrated System’s General Manager, a start-up company in Plummer, ID, that fabricated large fuel bladders and expandable shelters for the US Army. His government career began in 2010 when he became WA State Employment Security Department’s Regional Area Director overseeing the WorkSource Spokane Employment Center.
