Come judge the Text A Lawyer Battle Royal! Katia v. Kevin You decide who pitches in June to the crowd of silicon valley investors!
The Text A Lawyer co-founder team is preparing for an investor demo day event in the bay area in early June. We're looking to discern who should handle pitching and who should handle Q&A. We're planning to record things so we can replay all your helpful feedback (internal use only, promise).
We are going to follow the time format precisely:
10 minutes -- introduction
5 minutes -- Katia will pitch
10 minutes -- Katia's Q/A session
5 minutes -- Kevin will pitch
10 minutes -- Kevin's Q/A session
10 minutes -- Katia and Kevin will leave the room for the judges (you) to deliberate. Yes, we'll leave the recording on so we can listen later but we're hoping you can speak freely an honestly. -- We can take some tough love.
10 minutes -- We'll quickly tally the votes and announce who's doing what in at the Batchery.com demo day next month. Share a drink and snack with us - we'll stay around to chat.
TOTAL: 1 hour of your time means the world to us!
To show our appreciation we'll provide BEER/soda/water and chips/candy/hummus/celery type of refreshments and light snacks. Please email [email protected] to confirm (so we know how much food/drinks to purchase).
Thank you,
K2 (Kevin and Katia)

Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to Small Basic: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy
Roll back
| description |

<p>We run a code school. We hear from a lot of people we talk to that they're not sure whether they're interested in a job in the tech field, because they don't know enough about it. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn."</p> <p>At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.</p> <p>The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to Small Basic. Small Basic is a Microsoft language that gives users exposure to many of the fundamental skills used in more complex coding languages.</p> <p>This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.</p> <p>In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of these popular technologies - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.</p> <p>Please Note:<br>---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code. If you don't have a laptop, no worries, you will be able to use one of ours.<br>---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees.</p> |

Join us for a mixer of people working across various interaction design (IxD) disciplines. This kickoff event is an opportunity for us to talk more about the work people are doing without slides or speakers.
If you're a long-time member of the interaction design community in Portland, find yourself new without a network, or simply want to talk about what's going on, here's your chance to get connected!
We'll use this as an opportuntiy to discuss topics we might use for future meetings, learn what types of work people are doing in the community, and amplify efforts to broaden the interaction design community throughout Portland. |

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Python is a popular programming language for general-purpose programming. It is particularly easy to learn for those new to coding.</p> <p>This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.</p> <p>In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of this popular computer language - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.</p> <p>Please Note:<br>---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code. If you don't have a laptop, no worries, you will be able to use one of ours.<br>---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees.</p> |

CNPDX June: Machine Learning and Example Kube Apps
Roll back
| description |

Autodesk is hosting us for the first time for an application-centric meetup! Learn how to build Kubernetes projects. First we'll show you an end-to-end example Kubernetes application using Helm, and then we'll show you a Machine Learning/NLP project.
PLEASE RSVP on Meetup.com if you have an account for food ordering reasons.
==========================
Devstats: An example end-to-end Kubernetes application.
Presenter: Josh Berkus, Red Hat
You may know DevStats as a repository of contributor statistics for Kubernetes (devstats.cncf.io), but you're about to find out that it is also a great demonstration case of migrating a complete application to orchestrated microservices. Our community has lacked solid, production-quality, end-to-end, all-open-source application examples, so we decided to make DevStats into one.
=========================
NLP for fun and profit. Story of end to end machine learning
project on Kubernetes.
Presenters: Michał Jastrzębski, Hamel Husain, Github
Abstract: Machine learning makes waves again, we are being constantly
amazed by new feats neural networks can achieve. Models, while
important, are a small part of the whole machine learning system. The
infrastructure it runs on, the dataset itself and data
cleaning/preprocessing pipeline are often omitted in news articles,
but they are critical components of any machine learning project.
Infrastructure, in particular, is a hard problem and there are few
good examples of running cloud-native machine learning. In GitHub, we
are building a full platform for machine learning based on Kubernetes.
In this talk we will walk through such end to end project, one anyone
can replicate at home (code is open source and data is available), we
will tackle hard natural language problem - automatically labeling
GitHub issues as bug or feature. We will deep dive into our Kubernetes
use case and walk through different components we have used for every
step of ML project lifecycle - from data preprocessing to serving
model for the application. |

The Future of Work <a href="https://fowpdx.com/open-space/">open space conference</a> was created to bring together people who desire to change our standard definition of work and organizations or explore ideas on how we can improve the nature of work. It's a space to find connection among the many movements we're seeing based on the concepts of Lean, Agile, Responsive, and beyond. Regardless of industry or background, this is a safe space to share ideas, learn from those who have practiced new ways of working, and bring your most interesting questions to the table.
If you desire work to be engaging, enable great teams and amazing solutions, and empower all workers, this is a place to re-imagine what work could look like and learn how it can be done.

Please let us know if you have accessibility needs so that we can make your conference experience as wonderful as possible.
Close-in parking is limited so we recommend public transportation, carpooling, or bicycling if you can. You are welcome to park your bike inside the building (enter on the East side with bikes).
PARKING
There are several parking spots near SellerEngine that are free all day Saturday, but pay close attention to signage because most spots are 2-hours without passes.
The free spots are under both the East and West bound lanes of the Hawthorne bridge. |

Monthly meeting of the Portland open source GIS group. Projects big and small are usually presented monthly along with rousing conversation and discussion. All are welcome, no need to RSVP - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers so bring your ideas and questions!
This month our special guest will be Gareth Baldrica-Franklin, who will be giving us a tour of the Atlas of the Pacific Northwest, an interactive educational product served entirely with open source tools such as Chart.js, D3, Topojson, Leaflet, QGIS, and Geoserver. We'll also try to cover some of the usual exciting happenings in geodata, upcoming geoevents and bring your own geo-show and tell.
As always, there will be pizza! And BYOB is always welcome.
Our mailing list is here drop us a line with any questions:
