Interested in becoming a software developer and learning to code?
If so, we invite you to join us any Thursday at 12:30PM to learn more about our program, meet our staff and see our program in action. We offer the most in depth, professional software development program in town and graduates go on to secure roles at a median salary of $75k, and an average of $82k. Everything we teach is done in person by senior software engineers, and every student gets personalized career coaching. We strongly embrace diversity and inclusion, and we are the only Portland only school.
ABOUT ALCHEMY CODE LAB:
- Learn from industry professionals. Experience the real world practice of software development in an immersive, in-person, work environment. Your instructors are senior-level developers who share their knowledge and practices to enter the field at an advanced level.
- Be supported as an individual by teaching assistants and career coaching. A low instructional staff to student ratio of 6 to 1 means you have access to the guidance and help you need to successfully complete our rigorous training. Get prepared and ready to network and connect with the companies that interest you and need your technical skills and experiences.
- Get more out of your code school. Go beyond online and video-based programs to launch your career at an accelerated level. With an average starting salary of $75k, our graduates earn 25%-50% more than other schools.
- Develop Apps in AppLab. Alchemy helps Portland entrepreneurs bring their ideas to life by developing Apps for them. Graduates get paid to create them and add real project experience to their resume.

<p>Presentations begin at 6:30pm. We feature 2 awesome speakers that bring you the best that Portland (and beyond) has to offer in Node & JavaScript. Periodically we'll open with a brief lightning talk too.</p> <p>Open dialogue during the presentations is very welcome–we're all here to learn!</p> <p>Come a little early and say hi! The organizers will be available to help any newcomers with getting started. If you need help installing node and npm, or have questions or anything–please reach out.</p> <p>Before our first talk we'll engage in a friendly Node quiz! Prizes include awesome learning materials sponsored by Cloudflare (eg. Books like "Effective JavaScript" by David Herman, and "Node.js in Action" by Harter, Cantelon, Rajlich, and Holowaychuk).</p> <p>Our talks cover a variety of topics, presented by people with varying levels of experience. Some of our most recent speakers have been: Max Ogden, Substack, Chris Dickinson, Ben Acker, and more.</p> <p>Afterwards, if you're stoked to keep hangin' we regularly take our discussions onward to post-talk drinks nearby! We may even hack a little if the night is young!</p> <p>People who're new to programming and new friends to the Node community are very welcome! Say hi, make some noise, get to know folks, and ask questions!</p> <p>Brief note about our location:</p> <p>Please look for Nodesters standing by the door to let you in if it's locked! If you arrive beyond 6:35pm, please shoot us a tweet at @pdxnode, and we'll come as soon as we can to let you in. :)</p> |

PDX OSGeo Monthly meeting
Roll back

Monthly meeting of the Portland open source GIS group. Projects big and small are usually presented monthly along with rousing conversation and discussion. All are welcome, no need to RSVP - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers so bring your ideas and questions!
We have a couple of really interesting topics this month:
- We'll check out "Mapping Inequality" [1], a project out of University of Richmond, University of Maryland, Virginia Tech and John Hopkins. The project uses Leaflet and CartoDB to display georeferenced maps and redlining data from in the late 30's - with a focus on redlining and abrasive, unfiltered racist language that has directly influenced the formation of neighborhoods today.
- We also have a very cool spatial analysis presentation from Kevin that will show how he used PostGIS, QGIS and Geopy to calculate the most remote locations in Oregon and Washington, along the lines of what Project Remote [2] has been doing for the whole lower 48. Kevin's project also used Leaflet, MapboxGL JS and Turf for visualization.
We'll also cover the latest happenings in geodata, upcoming geoevents and bring your own geo-show and tell, so if you see something interesting in your geo-travels be sure to bring it along to share!
As always, there will be pizza! And BYOB is always welcome.

Join us for a combined meeting with TA3M Seattle!
Geeks Without Bounds (GWOB) is a humanitarian organization of technologists, first responders, policymakers, and volunteers that works towards improving access to communication and technology. With a focus on working with communities that have limited infrastructure due to violence, negligence, or catastrophe, GWOB organizes hack-a-thons for humanitarian technology, and helps prototype projects intended to turn into long-term initiatives through their Accelerator for Humanitarian Projects.
Lisha Sterling, executive director of GWOB, recently returned to Washington state from the US-Mexico border. She'll be talking to our groups about her month in Tijuana supporting Al Otro Lado and Frontline Wellness United, and ongoing technology projects supporting the health and legal rights of asylum seekers. We'll join her talk via teleconference.
Join us for a great presentation! We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking afterwards. We hope to see you there!

PDXHCD Interaction Design Networking Meetup
Roll back
| description |
Join us for a mixer of people working across various interaction design (IxD) disciplines. This kickoff event is an opportunity for us to talk more about the work people are doing without slides or speakers.
If you're a long-time member of the interaction design community in Portland, find yourself new without a network, or simply want to talk about what's going on, here's your chance to get connected!
We'll use this as an opportuntiy to discuss topics we might use for future meetings, learn what types of work people are doing in the community, and amplify efforts to broaden the interaction design community throughout Portland. |
→ |
Dark Patterns are tricks used in websites and apps that make you buy or sign up for things that you didn't mean to. Designers and developers often abdicate our responsibility to remove deceptive patterns from design. In this talk, we'll explore some dark patterns, talk about how it parallels with older industry practices, and what we should do about before it's too late to fix.
We'll also use this as an opportunity to meet others working across interaction design disciplines.
If you're a long-time member of the interaction design community in Portland, find yourself new without a network, or simply want to talk about what's going on, here's your chance to get connected!

Six Sigma Primer Workshop
Roll back
| description |

→ |
NOTE: Proceeds from ticket sales for this workshop go to Lean Portland in support of our volunteer efforts with nonprofits.
Whether you work for a manufacturing company, work in an office, or provide customer service, Six Sigma can help you solve important and challenging problems within your organization, using a structured approach and data analysis.
In this Six Sigma primer we’ll address:
- How the DMAIC model and analysis tools increase the chance of solving problems
- The different Six Sigma belt certification levels (Yellow, Green, Black and Master Black Belt)
- Popular analysis tools such as graphical tools, designed experiments (DOE), measurement studies, statistical process control, regression analysis and statistical software
- How Six Sigma compares to Lean
- Examples of Six Sigma applied to sustainability (environmental and social)
- Exercises for measuring time and conducting experiments
Join Brion Hurley from Business Performance Improvement to better understand how Six Sigma can be integrated into your organization.
Roots of Six Sigma
In 1986, engineers Bill Smith & Mikel J Harry introduced Six Sigma within Motorola, as a way to improve business performance, and make it easier for employees to utilize effective quality improvement tools.
Why did Motorola come up with this program? It all began in the late 1970s, when a Japanese firm took over a Motorola factory that manufactured television sets in the United States. The Japanese promptly set about making drastic changes to the way the factory operated by reducing the variation from product to product. The factory was soon producing TV sets with 1/20th the number of defects they had produced under Motorola management, and this translated to fewer warranty claims and customer complaints.
Six Sigma refers to the ability of processes to produce a very high proportion of output within specification (without defects or errors). Processes that operate with "six sigma quality" over the short term are assumed to produce long-term defect levels below 3.4 defects per million opportunities.
After Motorola achieved tremendous quality improvements, the popularity spread to other companies. Jack Welch, CEO of General Electric (GE) made it integral to his business strategy in 1995, requiring his managers to achieve Green Belt certification if they wanted to get promoted.
By the late 1990s, about two-thirds of the Fortune 500 organizations had begun Six Sigma initiatives with the aim of reducing costs and improving quality. Today, Six Sigma continues to be practiced and implemented within many manufacturing, banking, healthcare, service and financial organizations.

<p>Agile is part of an evolution in consciousness--in the nature of our awareness and noticing skills and our knowledge of self and other. When agile emerges in an organization, it does so within a consciousness unlike its own. Yet, our approaches to agility often impede its ability to stick where it emerges.</p> <p>Agilists have used the frames of mindset and learning. But, we need to use the frames of consciousness and development in order to truly transform. In doing so, we see agile transformations are actually personal transformations. Organizations don't change, people change and then the organization adapts.</p> <p>This deep dive session discusses the agile mindset and puts “mindset” in the context of “consciousness.” It speaks to advancing agilists who are trying to understand why adoptions go wrong when they have done everything "right." You are more likely to receive full value in this session if you have been pursuing agility within organisations for at least three years.</p> <p>This session provides pointers on how to spot developmental as opposed to lower level learning experiences. It is based on my own practice, on research I did for my master’s thesis, and on my book The Preservation of the Agile Heart: From Mindset to Consciousness.</p> <p>Learning Outcomes:</p> <p>· Be able to articulate a working definition of consciousness<br>· Understand the difference between mindset and consciousness<br>· Understand how consciousness and human development align<br>· Understand the difference between learning and development<br>· Be able to spot learning opportunities that do not facilitate development<br>· Be able to create opportunities for personal development and self-care in the context of development</p> <p>About the Presenter:</p> <p>Jean Richardson is a consultant and coach with nearly 30 years of experience in software development, with half of that time spent in learning about agile and participating in the agile movement. For the last six years she has coached individuals and teams in agile-aspiring organizations. A former AgilePDX Coordinating Committee member, Jean is actively involved in helping, guiding, and coaching the agile community at the local and national levels toward a collective agile consciousness!</p> <p>Notice: This meeting may be recorded.</p> <p>Events are made possible by the AgilePDX community and our sponsors, including platinum sponsor ProFocus Technology (<a href="https://www.profocustechnology.com/" class="linkified">https://www.profocustechnology.com/</a>). AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Agile Practitioners Book Club: Simon Sinek's Start with Why
Roll back
| description |
<p>Join us for a beer (or beverage of your choice) and a snack at the Rogue Eastside Pub to discuss Start with Why by Simon Sinek. (Our poll tied twice, and this is part two!)</p> <p>Here's the book in a nutshell, according to the handy Amazon description: "In 2009, Simon Sinek started a movement to help people become more inspired at work, and in turn inspire their colleagues and customers. Since then, millions have been touched by the power of his ideas, including more than 28 million who’ve watched his TED Talk based on START WITH WHY -- the third most popular TED video of all time.</p> <p>Sinek starts with a fundamental question: Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?</p> <p>People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers had little in common, but they all started with WHY. They realized that people won't truly buy into a product, service, movement, or idea until they understand the WHY behind it.</p> <p>START WITH WHY shows that the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way -- and it's the opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY."</p> <p>Let's ponder and talk about how asking WHY will help us or hinder us on our agile journeys.</p> <p>Join the #reading channel in our AgilePDX slack workspace to share your thoughts & ideas about this and future reads. Not part of AgilePDX slack? Send a request to [masked] and we'll invite you.</p> <p>Events are made possible by the AgilePDX community and our sponsors, including platinum sponsor ProFocus Technology (<a href="https://www.profocustechnology.com/" class="linkified">https://www.profocustechnology.com/</a>).
