HR Event: Networking - Back to Basics
Roll back
description |

Social media may be a good way to find people, but the fact remains that face-to-face networking is still best for building relationships and for attracting customers and employees. Good networkers are not born, they are created, and anyone can improve their networking skills – skills that will contribute to leadership and professional growth.
Special guest, Kathy Condon, Executive Coach, International Professional Speaker, Trainer and Author will present strategies on how to make your next networking event a fun experience where you can build critical business relationships. No matter if you are an Introvert or an Extrovert, this event will teach you simple networking techniques that you can use right away. To help put your new-found knowledge to the test, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a short networking exercise.
This event will get you started on developing and/or broadening your network early in the new year! As one of Kathy's client's recently said, "A handshake is worth a 1,000 emails."
Who should attend?
VPs of HR, HR Directors, HR Managers, HR Generalists
More information on Kathy:
Kathy's book “It Doesn’t Hurt to Ask: It’s all about Communication” was named “Best Book Finalist by USA Book News” in the business category. She is completing her second book “Face-to-Face Networking is Dead. WRONG! The book on networking” which she expects to release at the end of January 2011.

Our 6th annual show will enjoy the following enhancements:
Different weekend. For the past two years we have held the PRGE on the third weekend of September. In 2011 we have moved it out one week so as not to coincide with other events in town (like the awesome Portland Pirate Festival) and to move to a new venue that was available on that weekend.
New venue. The 2011 PRGE will be held in the Exhibit Hall of the Portland Doubletree Hotel located in Portland's Lloyd District. The Doubletree is located just steps from the Lloyd Center MAX Light Rail station and just across the street from Holladay Park.
More space. While we enjoyed a strong relationship with the Portland Crowne Plaza, our show has simply outgrown their facilities. In 2010 we used over 8,500 square feet of floor space spread across two rooms at the Crowne Plaza. Our decision to move to the Exhibit Hall at the Doubletree gives us access to 17,000 square feet in one contiguous room.
More games. In 2010 our Freeplay Arcade featured more consoles and full-size arcade cabinets than ever before. Due to the immense popularity of the arcade and tournaments we have allotted even more floor space for games in 2011. PRGE is currently working with some local arcade and pinball collector groups to help us secure even more game donations. Stay tuned for more details as we firm up these plans. |

Exploit Workshop

The exploit workshop happens every Wednesday night at 7pm in the BrainSilo hackerspace in Portland, Oregon. The purpose of the exploit workshop is to provide an encouraging environment to hang out and improve your skills at writing exploits. Ideally we will be looking at the exploitability of bugs in osvdb that mention that an exploit is commercially available or rumored, but is not publicly available. Challenges are being created every week to encourage looking at some existing exploit code, as well as fully understanding and automating the deployment of an exploit on live systems. |

Galois Tech talk: Verifying seL4-based Systems
Roll back
description |

Presented by Simon Winwood.
In 2009 the NICTA L4.verified project completed the machine-checked correctness proof of the seL4 microkernel. The natural next step is then to use this verified kernel to construct verified systems.
In this talk I give an overview of the ongoing work into systems verification in the Trustworthy Embedded Systems project. In particular, I will focus on the use of access control results to reason about the properties of systems in the presence of large untrusted components, such as a Linux kernel.

TOPIC:
CQRS and Windows Azure: A scalable architecture for the Cloud
CQRS. A confusing jumble of letters? Well, yes. CQRS stands for "Command Query Responsibility Segregation", and is an architectural pattern which is rapidly gaining popularity. It offers clear guidance on how to build highly scalable systems that embrace asynchronous operations.
In this talk we'll look at what CQRS is, how it lives up to the promises, and what kinds of systems would benefit from this approach. And then we’ll take the pattern and see what it takes to implement on top of Windows Azure.

OEN CEO Roundtable with Frank Helle: Raising Money in a Difficult Economy
Roll back
description |
Frank Helle, CEO of Axian, Inc., will lead an interactive discussion about the art and science of raising capital. Attendees will learn the do-s and don't-s from some real-world hands-on experiences. Share with other CEOs your experiences, insights and frustrations from past efforts and gain insights for more successful future outcomes.
This session will feature expert content provided by "an old-pro" at raising capital, Spencer Brown, Board Chair of Oregon Aesthetics Technologies, Inc., who has raised over $250,000,000 for a variety of start-up and later stage companies, and by a "first-timer" who has recently raised Angel money for his company. Learn from their successes and frustrations to improve your odds!
Our group will discuss how to attract attention, methods and styles of presentations that are most effective, when and how to adjust to the unexpected, strategies to employ, and tactics of persuasion found to be most effective. You also will receive a high-level recap of the discussion.
Open only to CEOs or Presidents of currently operating companies that have employees. Boxed lunch will be served. This program is limited to 12 participants, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The “Connecting Our Future” kick-off event will feature national and local presenters, including two nationally known speakers, Anthony Townsend of The Institute for the Future (www.iftf.org) and Joanne Hovis, CEO Columbia Telecommunications Corp. Locally, Steven Bass, CEO Oregon Public Broadcasting and Lew Frederick, Oregon State Representative will also be amongst the presenters.
The plan is sponsored by Commissioner Amanda Fritz, who stresses that the Council and the City must develop a broadband communications infrastructure as well as connectivity strategies to increase business vitality and job creation, enhance government services, promote sustainability, transportation, health care and regulatory policies; and to improve accessibility and responsiveness of government to citizens through connectivity.
Quite a mouthful, but come at 10 am for a brief coffee mingle to engage your fellow constituents, representatives and thought leaders for some plain talk.
For complete information, including the full kick off agenda and plan charter see PortlandonLine, the Office of Cable Management |

If you're like me, you spend WAYYYY too much time in front of a computer. I think it would be great to have a monthly get together at a bar or pub to just get to know each other, have a brew, and yes, talk about the business. Real human interaction, in other words.
We meet the first Tuesday of every month. |

Lightning Talk & Discussion Free for All
Roll back
description |

A completely chaotic, non-directed, organic discussion of our favorite web and design tools, ideas, methodologies, or anything relevant to the group. We had one of these in December (feel free to bring snacks, food, etc) and it went over very well. So well, in fact, many people have requested another sooner rather than later. So here's the deal:
We can set up a laptop on the projector and anyone who is interested can spend 5 minutes discussion and showing off their favorite tools, frameworks, projects - or just stand up and talk. Anyone interested should prepare a bit in advance, keep it short (we're serious about the 5 minute cutoff!), and let's cram as much (web and design related) knowledge as we can in 90 minute! |
