create Calagator::Event 1250459650 Galois tech talk: Program Inconsistency Detection using Weakest Preconditions Roll back

description nil Presented by Aaron Tomb. Many tools exist to automate the search for defects in software source code. However, many of these tools have not been widely applied, partly because they tend to work least well in the most common case: on large software systems that have only partial specifications describing correct behavior --- often a collection of independent assertions sprinkled throughout the program. Recent research has suggested that a large class of software bugs fall into the category of inconsistencies, or cases where two pieces of program code make incompatible assumptions. Existing approaches to inconsistency detection have used intentionally unsound techniques aimed at bug-finding rather than verification. In this dissertation, we describe an inconsistency detection analysis that subsumes previous work and is instead based on the foundation of the weakest precondition calculus. We have applied our analysis to a large body of widely-used open-source software, and found a number of bugs.

update Calagator::Event 1250459375 Portland Java User Group Roll back

description This month's topic: Gradle ---------- Speaker: Merlyn Albery-Speyer ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!) This month's topic: Gradle Come to the session if you want to participate in learning more about Gradle. Gradle is a powerful layer of Groovy built on top of a number of established tools and libraries. Smart guys have borrowed from the pioneering work of Ant, Maven, Gant, Buildr and come up with an expressive, concise, and convention-rich build tool for the Java family. For this session, there won't be any slides. I'm also not going to stand up and talk at you. Instead, I'm going to rely heavily on your involvement. I'll start with an introduction to Gradle, and then very quickly go into using it in practice. After a few minutes of that I'll open it up to go wherever we're most interested in. I'm not a Gradle expert, yet I believe that my Groovy background in conjunction with a few days of earnest usage have taught me a lot. This session will rely heavily on an internet connection, and we'll be googling for answers together if need be. Do this ahead of time: What is your intention for the session? Spend some time deliberately focusing on what it is you want out of the session. Bring that will you and share it with us. It will help us all focus on what's important and go some way to helping you get the most out of the session. Also, go have a quick read about Gradle on their website. That will save us all some time, help us get to the interesting details sooner, and be a good source of informed questions for you. ---------- Speaker: Merlyn Albery-Speyer I'm Merlyn, a Portland-based programmer with strong ties to both Agile PDX and Groovy. I'm also a member of an Agile team at YesMail, and I blog under the handle "curious attempt bunny". ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference. So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. create Calagator::Event 1250459641 The Real Life Social Network Roll back

description nil The focus of this talk isn't on Facebook, or Twitter, or Buzz - but rather how current research understands social interactions work in the real work. Specific technologies will only be mentioned as to how they all get it wrong - and more importantly - how you don't have to. You won't want to miss this. It isn't another "Social network buzzword Twitter buzz buzzzzzz lol" talk - but real interesting research in human behavior with real implications on future UX design. I'll be going over mostly the research presentation by Paul Adams, who works as the UX research lead for Google's social initiatives. EDIT: Apparently today he accepted a job at Facebook.

create Calagator::Event 1250459640 Pitch Club Roll back

description nil Want to practice your startup pitch in front of people who've done it before? Crave the harsh criticism of your peers? Need the validation of seeing what works and what doesn't in other pitches? Bring your 3 minute pitch. Put your name in a hat and if it gets picked, you're on. Powerpoints optional - just pitch. Then, answer questions and listen to painfully honest feedback from a panel of so-called experts. The first rule of Pitch Club is you have to be ready to pitch. No teams, no moral support, no looky-loos. More rules as we think of them. FAQ: Q: Who are these so-called experts and what are they going to do to me? A: Your pitch will be evaluated by tech entrepreneurs who have pitched and gotten funded. They are your superiors. Q: Do I need to send you my pitch beforehand? A: No. If you have a slide deck, bring your laptop or USB drive - we'll have a projector set up for you to use. Q: What about NDAs? Someone's going to steal my idea! A: There are no NDAs - use your best judgment about what to talk about and what not to. Also, remember the first rule of fight club - don't talk about fight club. We're all on the honor system here. Q: My pitch is more than 3 minutes - can I have more time? A: No.
