Portland Digital eXperience (PDX)
Roll back
| description |
First and foremost, we wanted to showcase Portland and folks that champion Portlandy ideals. Iâm lucky that, for the most part, I get to sit back and watch all of the amazing stuff that happens in Portland. And I consistently revel in the awesomeness that people here are building. With PDX, we wanted to showcase that almost frenetic variety of creativity in our town. But we also wanted to bring in folks who subscribed to common ideals. Thatâs why, in addition to some amazing Portland people, youâll find folks like Tumblr and Flipboard on the docket.
Second, we wanted this to be a true creative festival atmosphere. One of things we wanted most was to make this a festival of creativity, with some of that being creative applications of technology and some of that being the creative spirit of the music industry. Thatâs why MFNW and PDX are inextricably linked. And itâs also why weâve got speakers with a foot in music and a foot in tech, like Spotify, Shazam, CASH Music, and Tender Loving Empire.
Third, we wanted to create something intimate, inspiring, and invigorating. Many of us remember the serendipitous experiences of conferences like SXSW and Big Omaha. We wanted to capture that same kind of experience, bring interesting speakers, and get interesting folks in town for the event. Our goal is to have you sitting next to someone you never imagined having the opportunity to meet. Or getting the chance to chat with an amazing panelist at one of the concerts. Or simply running into someone on the street at the food carts. And maybe, just maybe, youâll get to spend a little more time chatting with awesome Portland people whom you never get to see.
Last but not least, we wanted PDX to provide a good excuse for people to visit Portland. Especially for those folks who are actively considering Portland for the next phase of their business or career. You see, sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live where we do. And to work here. But rest assured, there are any number of people and companies outside looking in. And this is a great opportunity to showcase what weâve got here.

First and foremost, we wanted to showcase Portland and folks that champion Portlandy ideals. I’m lucky that, for the most part, I get to sit back and watch all of the amazing stuff that happens in Portland. And I consistently revel in the awesomeness that people here are building. With PDX, we wanted to showcase that almost frenetic variety of creativity in our town. But we also wanted to bring in folks who subscribed to common ideals. That’s why, in addition to some amazing Portland people, you’ll find folks like Tumblr and Flipboard on the docket.
Second, we wanted this to be a true creative festival atmosphere. One of things we wanted most was to make this a festival of creativity, with some of that being creative applications of technology and some of that being the creative spirit of the music industry. That’s why MFNW and PDX are inextricably linked. And it’s also why we’ve got speakers with a foot in music and a foot in tech, like Spotify, Shazam, CASH Music, and Tender Loving Empire.

Crowdfunding - Money 4 Something
Roll back
| description |

Crowdfunding sites, like Kickstarter.com, have set the entrepreneurial world ablaze with their democratizing effect in the project funding realm. You’ve read about crowdfunding successes like Pebble, Kickstarter's biggest crowdfunding success (the project raised over $10 million). Now find out how you can use these same sites to get YOUR project off the ground or accelerated into the marketplace.
Join us for a special 1-hour presentation to find out more about:
How crowdfunding works
Various platforms available to entrepreneurs to raise funds or even find investors (beyond the more well known sites like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo)
How to create the “perfect pitch” for crowdfunding sites
How crowdfunding campaigns can be used to road test your product offerings and help you build a rabid fan-base
We’ll introduce you to the “Money 4 Something” step-by-step DIY workshop and resource for indie artists, innovators, inventors and entrepreneurs who need outside funding to launch or complete their projects. The information in the workshop is geared toward creative innovators looking for an alternative, community oriented way to get the word out about, and fund, their projects through crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter.com.
We’ll even give you a proprietary tool that you can use to craft your own crowdfunding campaign on your own—just for attending and learning how you can take advantage of these amazing crowdsourced fundraising mechanisms.
If you have any questions before the event, feel free to contact the presenter, Adrienne Fritze at [email protected], or by calling her at 503.349.6075. |

---
Here's the abstract:
Agile Still Sucks.
Bringing Agile into an organization is never a good idea. It is disruptive, complicated, and very expensive. It brings organizational dysfunction to the surface and shines a bright light on business practices that sabotage teams and fail to deliver value to clients. Further, unwitting teams may adopt a version of Agile that becomes dogmatic, inflexible, and interested in perpetuating the "processâ of Agile rather than being, well, agile. The only thing worse than bringing Agile in, is trying to get Agile right.
That said, everyone should be using Agile. This presentation will explore ways to bring Agile into an organization, how to choose the right "flavorâ of Agile, and what to do when it goes badly â because it will. This presentation will also examine how to expand the Agile conversation from within the software development team, outward to internal stakeholders, and eventually into client engagements.

Portland Perl Mongers -- h2xs is da bomb + dzil Pod::Weaver
Roll back
| description |

speaker: Ian Dees + Joshua Keroes
## Ian...
➜ will cover what it's like for n00bs learning how to create a new Perl module, including:
* Where rookies look for "Getting Started" information
* Which tools we can readily find for the job
* What kinds of questions we have about namespaces
What Ian would like to do to help:
* Listen to your answers
* Format them into some kind of guide (or supplement an existing one)
* Hand it to a Perl expert to post in the right place
* Commit to checking in a couple of times a year to keep the information current
You will be vastly enlightened, or horrified.
## Joshua...
➜ will continue down the Dist::Zilla path of Automated Enlightenment and speak on Pod::Weaver.
In July, Duke Leto gave Portland an introduction to Dist::Zilla, demonstrating how it can help write, package, test, and release your modules; automating the boring stuff like figuring out prerequisites, automatically inserting and updating $VERSION's, getting rid of all those meta files and generating them automatically; all good ways to focus on the important stuff: the code.
This month, Joshua will show how Pod::Weaver can help automate the boring parts of writing documentation so you can avoid getting bogged down by boilerplate and focus on the important stuff there: the docs.
As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.

At some point in your professional career you’ll almost definitely have to give a PowerPoint presentation. Remember how awful the last presentation was that you had to sit through? It doesn’t have to be like that.
PowerPoint is designed as a support tool, not the only tool of your presentation, and should be used in a way that strengthens your storytelling, message and delivery—not the point of all the information in your presentation.
Dave Yewman of DASH Consulting will show attendees how to use PowerPoint the right way, without putting your audience to sleep. The presentation will feature examples of PowerPoint pitfalls to avoid and helpful tips and tricks to crafting excellent presentations.
Key Takeaways:
Craft your presentation with the words first (the story), then put it in PowerPoint
Basic tips & tricks to get the most out of PowerPoint
How to tell good stories in your presentation |
