Location:

What Business Owners need to know about Internet Marketing
The essentials that every business owner must know. Failure to understand these principles will probably cost you money. This will be presented both from the perspective of a business owner, and also from a consultant's perspective who must advise businesses.
Organic Search including Google, Bing, and Yahoo. The big picture: where they've been, where they're going and the impact of social media.
Paid placement advertising: including Google, Bing, Facebook. and some efficiency tools.
Social Media: Facebook and Linked-In. When and how to use them efficiently.
Twitter: when is it useful and important.
Local Search will get time too, for both brick and mortar businesses and onsite service types.
Even though this will largely be big picture stuff, there will be plenty of actionable ideas and takeaways.
Presented by
Scott Hendison, founder Search Commander, Inc.
As the owner of a computer & software store from 1997 to 2002, Scott first learned about search selling software and building a local on-site computer repair business using both Pay Per Click and organic search engine optimization.
He began working for clients in the search industry in 2002, and has been attending and speaking at national search marketing conferences since he founded Search Commander, Inc. in 2004.
Search Commander, Inc. is an Internet consultancy with multiple services and brands, including SEO Automatic (a toolset for small businesses and Internet marketers), GetWPress (Wordpress development and maintenance), and Portland Technology Consultants (PDXTC - web hosting & technical services ).
Scott lives in SE Portland with his wife and two sons, and when he's not using a keyboard or cell phone, is often found coaching kids baseball, playing racketball, snowboarding or watching tv.

AgilePDX - Westside Meeting at Nike

"Real World Agile: Going All-in with Agile at Performance Health Technology
Speaker: Chad Casady
Abstract:
In 2009, PH Tech went "all-in" and began the adoption of agile methodologies throughout the software development process. In this session, you'll take a multi-year journey with a growing small business and experience the transition from the blissful ignorance of cowboy-coding through the misery and despair of a sinking, dysfunctional organization, and on to the satisfaction and exhilaration that comes with a high-functioning agile team. This session describes both the pain and the fulfillment that comes with developing software in a small business, before, during, and after agile.
Bio: Chad Casady is the Director of Information Technology at Performance Health Technology, aka PH Tech. His responsibilities include all aspects of technological infrastructure and software development, including three technology departments; Information Systems, Business Intelligence, and Software Engineering. When heâs not talking about healthcare or technology, heâs expounding the life-giving qualities of bacon and BBQ. Buy him a beer and heâll give you the recipe for the greatest chicken wing rub heâs ever stolen. |

Location as an invisible interface
Amber will be presenting an information-packed speech on her experiences with geolocation, GPS, location triggers, and non-visual augmented reality. Amber will cover the current players in the geolocation market, the location market itself, and why location is such a big deal. Topics such as real-time location sharing, geolocation triggers, geonotes, proximal notification and automatic checkins, and privacy and security will be discussed.
About the Speaker
Amber Case is a cyborg anthropologist and user experience designer who focuses on mobile software, augmented reality and data visualization, and reducing the amount of time and space it takes for people to connect. Amber has been featured in Forbes, WIRED, and Time, and also founded Geoloqi.com, a private location sharing application, out of a frustration with existing social protocols around text messaging and wayfinding. Amber has spoken at conferences all around the world, including TED, and was featured in Fast Company 2010 as one of the Most Influential Women in Technology.

pdxfunc: Portland Functional Programming Study Group
Roll back

PRESENTATIONS:
* Lyle Kopnicky will compare and contrast functional reactive programming (FRP) with <a href="http://cycling74.com/products/max/">Max</a>, the visual programming environment for music and video. They exist in the generally distinct worlds of computer science academia and professional production of live music and video. He will also touch on two FRP systems, <a href="http://docs.racket-lang.org/frtime/index.html">FrTime</a> and <a href="http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Yampa">Yampa</a>, as they are very different, but together illustrate the variations on FRP.
<i>ABOUT THE GROUP: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, Erlang, OCaml, Scala, and others. The group meets regularly and provides presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month.
SPONSORS: This meeting's venue, food and drinks are kindly sponsored by Janrain, providers of hosted user management solutions for social login and sharing, single sign-on and social profile storage: http://www.janrain.com/</i> |

* Philip Weaver will talk about performance tuning in Haskell. Laziness in Haskell can lead to performance that is very poor and difficult to understand. He will discuss a recent experience where memory consumption in a TLS implementation was about 100x the expected amount, how he used the GHC profiler to diagnose the problem, and how he used mutable variables and low-level GHC primitives to optimize the algorithm.

Women Who Hack
Roll back
| description |

→ |
This will be a casual get together for women who want to hack on projects with or around other women. All types of projects (software and hardware), languages, platforms and experience levels are welcome.
Don't have anything to work on? Come, and we'll help you find a project!
What you should bring:
* Your laptop or other equipment
* Your lovely self!
We'll provide:
* the space, including lots of seating and tables
* internet
* some snacks, including gluten-free and vegan options.
Our goal is to support local women hackers (and aspiring hackers) by providing a safe, welcoming environment in which you can connect with and learn from each other.
We're kid-friendly, too, so feel free to bring your children with you.
Women Who Hack is open to all self-identified women and genderqueer persons, as well as accompanied children of all genders.
All participants of Women Who Hack agree to follow the <a href="http://citizencodeofconduct.org/">Citizen Code of Conduct</a>.
Questions? Get in touch: [email protected].
Our Google Group is <a href="https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/women-who-hack">https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/women-who-hack</a>. |
