create Calagator::Event 1250462869 Computer Science Colloquium Roll back

description nil Title: Skolkovo, ARCCN, Software Defined Networking and OpenFlow Speaker: Dr. Carolyn Turbyfill, Director of Engineering, ARCCN Location: FAB 86-01 Time: 10:15am Abstract: What is Skolkovo? The goal of the Skolkovo Innovation Centre is "to concentrate international intellectual capital, thereby stimulating the development of break-through projects and technologies." [1] Companies engaged in innovative development are selected to become project participants and are provided with developmental assistance by the Skolkovo Foundation and its partners. The Applied Research Center for Computer Networks (ARCCN) is a non-profit organization within the Skolkovo project focused on creating enabling technologies for the next generation of computer technology. ARCCN’s vision is to develop a world class Russian center specializing in Software Defined Networking (SDN). SDN implements the control plane of network switches and routers in software running on separate servers, "to commoditize network hardware and provide a standard-based application development platform taking much of the features and functionality that exist inside custom proprietary software and driving it into an open SDN space." OpenFlow is an example of SDN. "OpenFlow offers a standard-based Application Programming Interface or API that links an Ethernet switch and a controller. This offers a model in which layer 2 Ethernet switches are low-cost merchant silicon based devices where flows are directed by a centralized controller(s)."[2] ARCCN is building collaborative relationships with international academic, research and commercial organizations. [1] http://www.sk.ru/en/Model.aspx [2] http://lippisreport.com/2012/02/lippis-report-187-software-defined-networking-needs-a-bigger-definition/ Bio: Dr. Turbyfill holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Her first research project in the field of Computer Science was the Wisconsin Benchmark that pioneered benchmarks by which relational database systems are measured today. She has advanced her career with milestones consisting of the first commercial implementations of leading edge products such as: the first firewall appliance, SunScreen SPF-100 and SKIP, one of the first commercial Virtual Private Networks (VPN); the first managed security service and the first round trip email marketing service. While at Sun Microsystems, she worked with CISSP, a coalition of companies, on changing export controls on encryption. As VP of Engineering at StackSafe, she led the team that developed the StackSafe Test Center, which was named the 2008 ITIL Innovation of the Year. In 2009 Dr. Turbyfill was inducted into the Women in Technology International's (WITI) Hall of Fame for her longstanding commitment to create opportunities for women in technology careers.

create Calagator::Event 1250462865 Science Fiction Reader Series Roll back

description nil The next Portland event will be held on Monday, October 15 and will be hosted by New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire, accompanied by Jay Lake and M.K. Hobson. The greater Pacific Northwest is home to Ursula K. Le Guin, Kay Kenyon, Jay Lake, Nancy Kress, Brent Weeks, Ted Chiang and Ramona Quimby. Although Ramona isn’t known for her Science Fiction and Fantasy escapades, the rest are, and will be celebrated as part of the Pacific Northwest Reading Series. These free quarterly events provide the Northwest Science Fiction and Fantasy community a chance to gather, network and enjoy readings from local authors. The 2012 series brings exciting authors directly to you through a series of readings held in local venues. After the success of our Portland pilot program, SFWA is adding a new venue in Seattle. Each event starts with notes from the host, a leading local author, who has selected two of their favorite writers to complete the evening’s theme. In turn, each is given time to read from their latest work, interpreting and explaining their concepts and vision. In addition, space is provided for networking and conversation.

update Calagator::Event 1250462858 Agile Metrics – Velocity is Not the Goal Roll back

description Rose City SPIN Presentation in partnership with PNSQC Agile Metrics – Velocity is Not the Goal Michael “Doc” Norton, LeanDog Velocity is one of the most common metrics used—and one of the most commonly misused—on agile projects. Velocity is simply a measurement of speed in a given direction—the rate at which a team is delivering toward a product release. As with a vehicle en route to a particular destination, increasing the speed may appear to ensure a timely arrival. However, that assumption is dangerous because it ignores the risks with higher speeds. And while it’s easy to increase a vehicle’s speed, where exactly is the accelerator on a software team? Michael “Doc” Norton walks us through the Hawthorne Effect and Goodhart’s Law to explain why setting goals for velocity can actually hurt a project’s chances of success. Take a look at what can negatively impact velocity, ways to stabilize fluctuating velocity, and methods to improve velocity without the risks. Leave with a toolkit of additional metrics that, coupled with velocity, give a better view of the project’s overall health. A promoter and practitioner of agile since 1999, Michael “Doc” Norton (@DocOnDev) is an agile coach and a partner with LeanDog. Doc’s twenty-plus years of software development have provided him with experience on a wide range of topics. As a member of LeanDog, living in Wadsworth, OH, Doc provides coaching, mentoring, training, and delivery in agile/XP/lean software development techniques. Doc is immediately suspicious of anyone who declares expertise in a single programming language or methodology. He is passionate about helping others become better developers, working with teams to improve delivery, and emphasizing software craftsmanship. About Rose City SPIN The Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) is a monthly forum for networking, mutual support, and promotion of effective software practices. We exchange practical experiences, ideas, knowledge, wisdom, and war stories about the technical, business, and human facets of software process improvement. The Rose City SPIN serves the software development community of the Portland/Vancouver metro area. Whether you work for a large company or a small one, corporate or self-employed, industrial or academic setting, you are welcome at the Rose City SPIN. Monthly seminars are sponsored by the Rose City SPIN and the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference. About PNSQC PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality. The Mission of the PNSQC is to enable knowledge exchange to produce higher quality software.
